While there are many skills a human resource manager may need, the one that is most important is active listening skills. A person might ask how would a human resource manager learn these skills and why are they important? As a human resource manager it is essential that all communication between each party is clear. If for instance an employee comes into the office complaining that their insurance has not been taken out of their check. This employee is upset because of this situation. By clarifying or interpret to the speaker what they said to you demonstrates your understanding of what they are communicating to you. Elaborating on and asking open-ended questions on the subject will show your comprehension of the topic. Any who, what, where, when, how, or why questions can be a clarifying question, but those are not the only possibilities (Hoppe, 2006, p. 12-18). Another option to a clarifying question is a probing question it offers new ideas or suggestions. This type of question offers thoughtful responses instead of telling the speaker what to do. Clarifying is a coherent way of expressing your understanding of the speaker. The fifth skill on the list of active listening skills is summarize. When you summarize, you pull together all the information you just heard, into a brief version of the events that took place. You will be able to repeat this information back in detail. Summarizing helps people see their key themes, and it confirms and solidifies your grasp of their points of view (Hoppe, 2006, p. 12-18). As a human resource manager this skill can be used to gather the facts of the conversation, and use that to further the conversation with the speaker. That is, the listener does whatever is necessary to get the full intended meaning from the speaker's communication (Antariksa, n.d). When you take a job as a human resource manager, it is unlikely that active listening skills is one of the job duties listed. Although, learning this skill is important, it needs to be practiced. Good active listening skills for a human resource manager can develop you into an eminent leader in your career. “The heart of a fool is in his mouth, but the mouth of a wise man is in his heart (Franklin, 1998, p. 24).” Benjamin Franklin was saying that we all must think before we speak and our actions speak louder than our words.

Active listening puts attention to the needs of the nursing staff and supports their decision-making for providing quality patient-centered care. In The Servant (1998), a teacher of leadership principles explained that listening is one of the most important skills a leader can choose to develop (pg. 25).
The main purpose of active listening is to let others know that you care and that what they say is important to you. Treat them not like they’re part of a hierarchy and they are the bottom of the list. Never act as if one person’s opinion is more important than another’s.

As a professional in today’s society, it is greatly important to be able to communicate effectively with other professionals, with clients, and with those that are encountered in daily living. In order to communicate in a proper manner, not only is talking and non-verbal communication, but a large aspect is the ability to listen. Listening is a vital task in order to build a relationship and find meaning in someone else’s words. In order to find this meaning one must follow the characteristics of active listening, face the challenges to listening, and reflect upon one’s own listening skills.
In applying the skills to a case scenario, I found it difficult to focus and use my active listening skills. I do know that in an ideal situation, I will more than likely be one on one with my client and will generally conduct the interview in a quieter atmosphere, allowing me to focus better on what the client discloses. However, with continuous practice I believe I will be able to overcome becoming distracted by background noises.
Listening is a big part of communicating well with others. Take time to carefully listen to what others are saying, and also take time to observe their nonverbal communications. A good listener does not interrupt the person while their talking. they make eye contact with the person speaking. they provide the speaker with their full attention, avoid unnecessary distractions, and try to understand the other persons point of view by being empathetic.
Verbal and written communication skills are important competencies in the workplace, as much as 33 percent of the day is spent listening (Walker, R., 2015). Although a significant amount of our time is spent listening, this is a misunderstood skill often overlooked by professionals. “The ability to listen effectively can have a big impact on our ability to communicate well with others. Effective listening can help us build relationships, be more productive, and determine whether others are being deceptive” (Walker, R., 2015). To be an effective manager, teacher, collaborator, or leader one must be an effective listener. Effective listening is processing the information given to you by a speaker, showing that you are listening and attentive.

The first phase in the listening process is attending. Attending is willfully striving to perceive selected sounds. The most important factor of attending is preparing to be physically and mentally ready to pay attention. We should focus mainly on attending to the message rather than encountering inner thoughts and feelings. In my day-to-day life, I try to get ready to attend even though it could be difficult at times. For instance, the other day when I was home, I had an argument with my mother and I started back talking her. But I realized that I should look directly at her and situate myself correctly. After she finished speaking, I understood what she had meant and that was when I saw an improvement in myself because it made it look like I was interested in what she was saying.
