Conducting a review on the academic integrity policies of ABC University has proved to be a fascinating and rewarding task. I conclude that the current policy is effective at outlining guidelines for acting with integrity and providing information on how both students and faculty can deal with potential issues. However, the university benefit by increasing our students and faculty familiarity with both the current academic Integrity policy and its relevance. I recommend the school implement learning modules for students as a way for the school to adopt an educational and training approach to tackle academic integrity issues. It is the responsibility of ABC university to place emphasis on the importance of these values in order to promote an integrous institution. To maximize such affects the school should present academic integrity modules to both 1st and 4th year students and examine potential issues is the classroom and, in the workforce respectively. A central focus of the modules will be on the importance of these fundamental values and how they can be followed. It has been noted that students are likely to significantly overestimate the number of cheaters in a classroom and use such an estimate for justification for their own dishonest activities. For this reason, it is likely that students would respond well to a strong social norm campaign. Modules focused on reminding students of their obligation to actively promote academic integrity both at school and in the workforce will best prepare them for the future. The school shall also develop an academic integrity module for faculty. In addition to covering the importance of academic integrity this module would also cover the process for initiating necessary investigations. Additionally, it has been found that institutions without explicit academic integrity policies found an average cheating rate of 45% vs. 23% with traditional academic integrity codes (McCabe D, & Trevino, L). Ultimately, an improved focus on academic integrity will noticeably reduce such negative effects. Admittedly the implementation of such modules would incur upfront costs. However, the elimination of issues outlined above will increase the quality of graduates and thus the value of a degree from ABC university, by a margin far greater than the initial costs incurred.
The changes proposed shall be implemented without hesitation. A quick implementation of these processes will mean that the message can be delivered as soon as possible. ABC University may see benefit in appointing a faculty member to proceed upon the creation of the necessary modules. There may be a variety of external institutions who may prove to be valuable resources and keen on aiding such a cause. The International Centre for Academic Integrity and the Smith School of Business at Queens University both have extensive experience with such practices. That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. In this case, people may argue that the only party at fault consists of the students. However, the faculty may be partially guilty as well, as their lack of care towards the rules has created a situation that jeopardizes the school’s integrity. Revision may then seem like the least of the school’s priorities, as they must show they seriously consider educational integrity. Likewise, at the University of Virginia, “157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source: D). Again, the school and all those who work there hold at least part of the fault for this ignorance because, theoretically, they should preserve and enforce the rules provided. The fact that the scandal exists means that they were not doing their jobs to their fullest. Academic honesty is defined as the use of one's own work, this includes thoughts, materials and workings, in the endeavours of writing papers, taking exams (online or campus based), and other assessable material (Harder, 2014). Academic integrity is the ethical policy of academia. This includes values such as prevention of plagiarism; upholding a high academic standard; honesty and rigour in research (Kirk, 1996). Plagiarism is one of many dishonesties that occurs and is the most common. In 2010, Johanson published an article that stated there may be a correlation with the recent abundance of technology and the rise of student dishonesty. Here at Westminster College, academic integrity is one of the main areas of focus put upon the many students that attend. It is a standard that every student should adhere to and if they don’t then they are subject to serious consequences. Academic integrity is defined by Westminster as a “central to the purpose and pursuit of any academic community”. In the workplace, truth enhances personal commitment to the code of ethics set forth by the profession. Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.

Studies have been shown that state “a majority of students violate standards of academic integrity to some degree, and that high achievers are just as likely to do it as others”. Students who are in a difficult situation, whether it be at home or at school, and and are struggling to achieve the grades they want will firstly result to academic dishonesty, or cheating. I strongly agree with the author’s statements because from personal experiences, I have had peers who requested to cheat off of homework as easy as a single worksheet. After closer evaluation, I have noticed that the statements from McCabe closely aligned with the students involved in my situation.
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often.
