Academic integrity is defined as the moral code or ethical policy of academia. With all morals and regulations, it is easy to fall short of them sometimes. This is primarily evident in the education system. Cheating is an often broken rule of academic integrity. The struggle to maintain academic integrity throughout college students has been an ongoing battle between cheating versus honesty, habitual repeat offenders versus commitment to integrity, and collusion versus cooperation.
Honesty is a key moral characteristic to have throughout life, but the problem is some students lack the honesty to admit that they are even in the wrong. According to an article in the Huffington Post, “75% of college students admit to cheating”(Buchmann). I am

With the lack of academic integrity held by college students, should we trust any of them? Like all large groups of people, there are diamonds in the rough. There are the few that honestly do their work and they may say that having academic integrity can actually help their grades. Let 's say that a student studies for a test, gives their honest answers on the test, and did not cheat. When the student receives their grade, they know exactly what they understood and exactly what they need to improve on. If the student cheated, knowing their true results is undetectable.
Another battle has been between habitual repeat offenders, and a commitment to integrity. The habitual repeat offenders are the ones who continually cheat, knowing that it is wrong. In her essay, Student Apathy and

When students cooperate on an assignment or project, the intent is to have them work together to complete the task. Both students should understand the entire assignment and have the ability to recall each other 's thoughts. Collusion is when students wrongfully cooperate in order to get a grade. Both students know little to nothing about their counterpart 's portion. Collusion should be avoided because although the task may reach completion, the students still do not understand the portion of the work that they didn 't
That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.
However, this may stem from a lack of enforcement of the rules. Even at the most prestigious schools, such as Harvard University, students are not upholding the rules implemented: “The possibility that 125 Harvard students ‘improperly collaborated’ on an exam in the spring has galvanized … discussion about … honor codes” (Source: C). In this case, people may argue that the only party at fault consists of the students. However, the faculty may be partially guilty as well, as their lack of care towards the rules has created a situation that jeopardizes the school’s integrity. Revision may then seem like the least of the school’s priorities, as they must show they seriously consider educational integrity. Likewise, at the University of Virginia, “157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory” (Source: D). Again, the school and all those who work there hold at least part of the fault for this ignorance because, theoretically, they should preserve and enforce the rules provided. The fact that the scandal exists means that they were not doing their jobs to their fullest. Although revision may seem simpler to carry out, the school’s staff must show an attempt at intervention within the student lives to keep them on a path towards

Academic integrity is a commitment, even in the face of adversity, that is based on five fundamental values including honesty, trust, fairness, respect and a responsibility for your actions.

Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of the student.
Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
In conclusion, the issue of academic integrity does not only affect an individual, but also an institution. Therefore, it is the duty of students and schools to ensure that ethical principles are upheld all the time. Moreover, institutions of higher learning should deal with all reported cases of academic dishonestly severely to deter others. In addition, a culture of academic integrity should be promoted. For students, it is even more important because it helps them to avoid losing a potential career due to misconduct. Moreover, upholding the values of ethics and integrity provides them with intrinsic
Add to that a pervasive change in societal values, and students can easily be snared if they lack a strong moral compass - as well as a campus where peers and administrators take a firm stand against dishonesty. (Clayton 20).
Honesty and integrity are very important in the medical field. We as healthcare workers are given such trust and responsibility. We should always strive to do our best and when faced with tough situations. When we don't always know what to do or the proper way to react we should always be honest. Let our superiors know what is going on and ask for advice when we need to. This would show that we are honest. When we come into contact with patients they rely on us to do the right thing and always perform our job with integrity. Often people’s lives are in our hands. We have to care about the patient and care about our job in order to continue to provide quality care. If someone hates their job they are not going to give their best in every way they can. The medical field is not a place for that person.
Without academic integrity, learning can never be assured. Honesty is not fixated, and changes by situation. Everyone should strive for academic honesty or integrity. By trying your hardest and receiving what you deserve, you will go farther than anyone else in life.
Students, specifically high school students have a lot of expectations from everyone around them; from their parents, teachers and even the colleges they are trying to pursue. Morally cheating is wrong, but some students don’t see that it is morally wrong, but see that it takes away the burden they have toward getting a numerically high grade. Other students who believe and act upon the fact that cheating is morally wrong have different opinion about cheating. Mostly student who care about their grades and are considered above average students are the one who cheat, “ According to the 1998 poll of Who's Who Among American High School Students, 80% of the country's best students cheated to get to the top of their class.
Honor and integrity are two fundamental principles of society, stemming from past civilizations. In my opinion, honor is something accredited to person for doing the right thing repeatedly, regardless of his or her personal circumstance. Honor can be established through self-sacrifice, honesty, and other good deeds. Honor is also an action that can be shown to other people, much like respect. Honoring one another’s needs and wishes, a group of students can operate more effectively and happily. Integrity is knowing when to do the right thing and doing that thing. An honorable person would have a strong sense of integrity and follow it. Much like in society as a whole, honor and integrity are key elements to a successful student body in a university.
Ones said, “integrity is the foundation for all relationships” success comes and go, but integrity is forever (Forbes 2012). Hence, the importance to do the right thing on everything we do is essential to prevent embarrassing situations in which it will follow any individual for the rest of their career. Academic Integrity reflects my future job actions, it is the path that will open the doors to my future. If the academic credibility is not at a hundred percent, it will show in the workplace, positive or negative demeanor is an obvious signal how one is capable to build credibility, outstanding reputation or make a company loose
