My parents, who migrated to the United States from Nigeria, dream of a brighter future for me and my siblings. To fulfill this dream, they sacrificed luxuries of life so that my siblings and I could attend a parochial school. For this reason, I have always done my best to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way, especially by excelling academically. This goal to maintain my academic excellence is the reason why I am determined to work diligently in UAB’s College of Arts and Sciences and beyond. In order to prepare for my future, I have set various short and long term goals. One of my short term goals is to finish in the top five percent of my class in the College of Arts and Sciences. With a challenging liberal arts foundation,
I want to strive for the best grades. I also want to be more involved with our community here in Sedalia and neighboring cities.
I endeavor to obtain excellence in my academics; I wish to exemplify scholarship by constantly asking the whys and hows of things. I will not let a bad grade define who I am as a student or who I will become. I also want to take the most challenging classes available, not because it will look good on my college application, but because I genuinely love the concept of learning and discovering new things. Education doesn’t end after high school, so I plan to attend university, eager to attain the knowledge to better understand my world: and expand it.
Firstly, I secured myself in the top six percent in my class. In the state of Texas, all public universities automatically accept all students ranking in the top ten percent with the exception of the University of Texas, who automatically accept the top eight percent. College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. In fact, according to the Website Ask.com, approximately 15 percent of college students receive a degree. Because I’m willing to earn a degree like many other successful students, I find that college is the stepping stone to my dream goals. College is challenging, but it can be a rewarding growth experience and easier when setting up goals. Having educational and career goals helps students keep the focus and motivation. Besides, having knowledge of different learning styles can help students learn about themselves and increase efficiency while studying. Writing skills learned in college are also a powerful tool for both academic and career success. The campus is a great place to find tools to succeed and achieve continued academic success. The academic journey from my childhood up to my ongoing college experience was an important role in defining who I am as an individual. Like any other person, I eventually gained the understanding and importance of essential qualities like time management, work ethic, developing strong mental mindset, and many other things throughout my years of education. Fortunately for me, I became aware of these things much earlier than my peers around me. However, being aware of these things was only a fraction towards success. The mindset of the person who achieves success with experiences is strong. I am the one who was successful with my experiences. My experiences at the boarding school have taught me what a student should do in order to get success. It is always tough for a student to concentrate on studies if he is staying away from home. I did not fail any of my classes and instead received good grades for my perseverance. As an immigrant to a new country, my greatest barrier is English. Consequently, I had to go to tutoring and work three times more than native English speaking students. But despite the frustrations, I never allowed myself to give up. I never stopped striving for excellence. I worked very hard and took advantage of extra credit opportunities, even though I was already earning a good grade in the course. My short-term academic goals are graduating from Cosumnes River College in Spring 2019 with an Associate of Science degree.
