Three factors influencing the Educational Achievement and Socio-Emotional Functioning of Adolescents
Intellectual attributes and non-intellectual attributes both contribute and facilitate students ‘success (Burger, 2004). Non-cognitive skills are increasingly considered to be as important as cognitive skills and intelligence quotient (IQ) in determining successful performance in various domains including academic achievement and socio-emotional functioning as these skills play affect greatly the transition from adolescence to adulthood (Burger, 2004). The aim of this paper is to explore the relationships and influences of family socio-economic status (SES) and self-control on academic achievement; and introversion on socio-emotional functioning. Adolescence in this paper is considered in its broadest sense, comprising late-primary-school –age to undergraduate college-age populations i.e. approximately 10 to 25 years old.
1. Self-control influences academic achievement

Myers (2010) defined self-control as ‘the ability to control one’s behaviour and desired and delay gratification for later rewards’. Research findings in the social sciences, pedagogy and education argue that there is a strong relationship between self-control and academic achievement, with a lack of self-control considered as a factor in declining achievement (Tangney, Baumeister & Boone, 2004). Adolescents who believe that they can achieve well in schools tend to have a high internal locus of control and persist with school tasks. The reasoning is that an internal self-control has the ability to suppress an instant gratification towards a lasting outcome of desires (Myers, 2010).

Lastly, it is suggested that mass media plays a practical and effective role in bringing about social awareness among people regarding the poor academic conditions on account of socio-economic problems. Nearly everyone in the modern world has heard of the term self-control, a seemingly non-important or uninteresting topic of interest. However, self-control has been related to having one of the most significant impacts on a person. Even some have gone as far to say that self-control is the “biggest predictor of a successful and satisfying life” (Pinker 1), which are bold words for a topic that many merely disregard. The idea of self-control is a concept coined in the Victorian era, and appears immensely throughout the novel, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, written by R.F. Baumeister & J. Tierney. Essentially a self-help book, ‘Willpower’ provides explanations for why humans are doing the things that they do, and why people aren’t always as virtuous as they may be expected to be. Self-control affects many facets of a person’s life, and by looking at how it is presented in psychology, and in Baumeister and Tierney’s novel, Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength, one will see the correlations and differences between modern research and historical perspectives on the idea of self-control, and ultimately decide if the idea of self-control is an inherent trait or a learned condition.
My most significant accomplishment would be placing second in the United States of America National FFA Agriscience Fair. Building up to this accomplishment was a challenge I never imagined to take on. It began with my FFA Chapter Agriscience Fair. I had decided against competing, but my adviser suggested I try. Pulling together a project, I placed second. This meant I would not compete at the state level. My adviser urged me to perform another project, under a new category, promising to take me to state. I worked hard and created a project in a week. Surprised, but true to his word, my adviser entered me into the State FFA Agriscience Fair. Upon my interview, I was nervous. The Achievement has been a reoccurring issue for many years within the education system. Achievement gaps refers to the academic performance within a set of students. The most vital indicators pertaining to the achievement gap is reviewing standardized tests, course selection, dropout rates, and college completion rates (Morris 227). This issue has been reoccurring because of the various attempts of reforms to close the gap. Some of the reforms to decrease the gap is “No child left behind act 2001”, recovery act, P-12 reform, and many more. It can be argued that these first reforms changed the education system to any extent. However it is evitable to find the most successful reform for the United States increase economically. Which is why this topic is important for North Carolina. The achievement gap is sustainably defined by the differences among not only racial groups but subgroups as well.
Self-regulation is a theory of human behavior involving cognitive, affective, motivational, and behavioral components and it refers to self generated thoughts, feelings and actions that are planned and cyclically adapted to the attainment of personal goals (Boekaerts, Pintrich & Zeidner, 2005). People’ self-regulation differs by individual and its development depends on different styles of parenting during childhood. According to Higgins and Silberman (1998), there are parents who consistently focus on encouraging children to behave desirably to achieve positive outcomes, rewarding children when they reach a goal and those who primarily focus on preventing children from creating negative outcomes by teaching children how to avoid potential dangers and punishing them when they behave undesirably. The former parenting style makes children think more about the ideal things they would and would not do whereas the latter parenting style makes children think more about things they ought and ought not to do. Successful is a simple word, however, the meaning of this word changes quite often. Each person has a different definition of success and that definition can change depending on the situation. Bob Dylan once wrote, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” This a very broad definition of success and should not be used. The argument on the debate on whether or not the academic grading system is fair or not, isn’t something that is discussed too often. We have come to accept that the current grading system is the norm and that it is something that is unchangeable. In eighth grade, there was a boy who sat next to me in class who excelled on tests and homework, but asked questions that clearly displayed a lack of understanding of the subject. How did he have such a high GPA when he really wasn’t all that smart? While he breezed by schoolwork without even comprehending the subject, conversely, my friend understood the topic at hand but failed nearly every test. If GPA really was a measure of intelligence, then how did he have a higher GPA than she did?
Research indicates that early self-control is related to self-control in later childhood and throughout life (Bronson, 2000; Eisenberg et al., 1997; Sroufe, Carlson, & Schulman, 1993). Children with poor self-control tend to disrupt class, behave aggressively, and are likely to be rejected by their peers. Children with poor control are likely to be poorly adjusted to the adult world. The ability to self-regulate has been associated with secure attachments (Vondra, Shaw, Swearingen, Cohen, & Owens, 2001) and is also predictive of emotional knowledge, social competence, conscience, and resiliency in early to middle childhood (McCabe, Cunnington, & Brooks-Gunn, 2004).
It is noticeable that the system of education is changing from time to time based on financial issues and how the world is growing. In the past, individuals taught the education system from the oldest member of the family to children, and their members were charging fees from the families that sent their children to them. Which meant that education was an important thing in all ages. Nowadays, the education is shaped to an official system run by professional people in governments and many countries invest high amounts towards education which makes evidence of how important it is in our current life. Every country has a different system of education based on their financial stability, government infrastructure and the standard of the government officials. Conclusion, media can be used to promote social growth and thinking skills. If television and the newer electronic media, is used wisely it can have great positive potential for learning and development. Television is a better medium for conveying certain types of information, and it makes learning available to group of children who do not do well in traditional school situations and even to people who cannot read well. People believe media also can make any latest new all around to world reach everyone easily via media mass in a very short time.
I have made many achievements in my life. I am happy to be such an achiever at things. I remember my first achievement which was in kindergarten. In kindergarten I got on the honor roll for the first time. I was so happy, but I was just happy because my mom was happy. I didn’t even know what honor roll meant, but I finally founded out that is meant that I got all A’s. My mom was so happy for me, and I got lot of money for my A’s. After that my next achievement was that I learn how to ride a bike. When I first started to ride a bike with no training wheels I kept on falling. After I kept falling I didn’t want to learn anymore, but I saw that my little cousin was riding a bike, so I just had to learn how to ride a bike. Finally, after all the sores and burses, I learned how to ride a bike. I still fall every now and then.
