¨BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.¨ The stable quote of George Orwell’s 1984, a novel written in 1949 that contains concepts that are feared by the citizens of the world today in 2016. The fear of an elite group or person controlling the world, from politics to currency, war and history, everything was portrayed within the novel and have numerous conspiracy theories surrounding it today. Speculations that groups such as the Illuminati and the New World Order are secret, elite societies that are controlling all aspects of the world without the average person knowing creates a similar feeling of Big Brother of 1984. these secret societies and elite group to attempt to control all aspects of the world.
Although 1984 does not specifically involve a conspiracy theory of an elite group ruling all, it does contain Big Brother, a power hungry dictator. Big Brother and The Party, the group regulating all information given to the people are determined to control the minds of all people in England, including their simple thoughts. Orwell writes about the party, ¨The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested in solely power, pure power (Orwell).¨ This quote describes The Party and its motivations portray the overwhelming power they have been given and how they continue to abuse in order to dominate their territory. This elite group and their almighty leader, Big Brother, are willing to go to any length to prove Big Brother is omniscient and will save them all. The Party has re-written history, the Thought Police (Police created to arrest and assure people ¨disappear¨ when speculated to be thinking beyond The Party and Big Brother), and many other organizations to confirm that no citizen will rebel against the leaders. Later in the book, O’Brien and Winston are discussing how the Party is intoxicated with power, as they fear for the future O’Brien explains ¨If you want …show more content…
a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face --- forever (Orwell).¨ This quote is a perfect representation of The Party and their actions, as though the Thought Police are stepping on anyone in disagreement with them as though they are a miniscule bug of some sort. Big Brother’s tyranny with The Party basically being his hype men were able to brainwash even the brightest of people in England to believe even that two plus two equals five. Their hunger for power and desire for their people to look at them as factually correct with adoring eyes fueled their power and motivation to sway the entire country’s opinion eventually providing the source for Big Brother’s wealth and control. Wherever or whatever caused Big Brother to develop this demand for power, became the source for his total domination with The Party. Despite the figure of Big Brother being featured in a fictional book, there are authentic conspiracy theories surrounding our world today.
The New World Order is one of the most famous elite groups which has been confirmed to exist, but their actions are questionable. This group consists of royal figures, major heads of corporation, and political leaders that meet regularly to discuss and plan the next operation. Ken Adachi, author of the article the New World Order describes some of the actions this elite group has
planned. Most of the major wars, political upheavals, and economic depression/recessions of the past 100 years (and earlier) were carefully planned and instigated by the machinations of these elites. They include The Spanish-American War (1898), World War I and World War II; The Great Depression; the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917; the Rise of Nazi Germany; the Korean War; the Vietnam War; the 1989-91 "fall" of Soviet Communism; the 1991 Gulf War; the War in Kosovo; and the two Iraq wars. Even the French Revolution was orchestrated into existence by elements of the NWO (Adachi). As atrocious as it may seem to think there is a group of people purposefully assuring these events take place, but the overall goal of the New World Order is to reduce the world’s population by two thirds; which would explain the consistent disasters happening. Clearly the efforts made by the NWO have not been completely successful because tragedies continue to happen and if they are the ones planning them, who knows what they could do next? The NWO is mostly made up of world leaders with a commitment to total domination and power prompted them to bond together in attempt to take rule over the entire world. Lastly, one of the most famous conspiracy theories of an exclusive group plotting to take control of the world is the Illuminati. The Illuminati is very similar to the New World Order; however, the main members are celebrities and their is a religious aspect to the conspiracy. Jack Zavada wrote an article called ¨What is the Illuminati Conspiracy¨ and explained that certain people who study the Bible believe the Illuminati is laying the groundwork for the Antichrist.
At the time of the writing of 1984, World War II had come to an end and Orwell had been exposed to the atrocity of communist leaders. The ideas of Big Brother, the leader of the dystopian society featured in 1984, reflect the idea of Adolf Hitler, the rising power from 1939 to 1945 who, if he had succeeded, would have created a totalitarian world. Big Brother is a corrupt leader that represents an entire governmental system. The Party’s three slogans,
The book 1984, by George Orwell is based on the theory of “Big Brother” and how he is always watching you. In the book, the Oceania government controls their citizens by saying and ordering them into not doing certain things. Which then forced their citizens to deceive their government by going in to hiding. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, Japanese-Americans were ordered to do certain things as well. Both of these two events prove that the government can force their citizens to do anything under their power. I think some parts of the government abuse the right of their power and manipulate their citizens into doing unlawful events.
Imagine living under a complete totalitarianism government, where everything is controlled by the government, all political, social and economic activities. The movements by the people in the society will be monitored by telescreens, people who have thoughts against or who are speaking out against the party or government will be prosecuted by the thought police. In George Orwell’s book 1984, the party has multiple methods of how to control the people using big brother to create fear, the telescreens to watch the movement of the people in the society and lastly the thought police to prosecute anyone who is against/speaking out against Big brother and the party. In the book 1984, the author uses the futuristic setting to craft the theme that
In 1984, the manipulation of the body is an effective practice that oppresses a population. The Party maintains absolute control over Oceania’s citizens by manipulating their physical state to better repress them. This leads to them being more about their own pain and physical well being, thus distracting them from the suffering that is happening in the world around them, and distracting them from thought of rebellion. The Party uses physical manipulation via overworking them to exhaustion and torture methods. The Party keeps their citizens in a state of exhaustion as they are easier to control, as the narrator explains while Winston works in the Ministry of Truth:
Today’s modern world may not be exactly like 1984, but there are some issues that are very similar to it. Some of the biggest issues that is becoming compromised today is the issue of privacy, which in the book 1984 was something that the people did not have much of because of things like telescreens. Not only is our privacy compromised but the government is also being too controlling. Ways today’s privacy is being compromised are through things like game consoles, phones, social media, and drones and not only is our being compromised through these things but the government is also gaining too much control by compromising our privacy.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, Big Brother is “A person or organization exercising total control over people's lives.” Not only is Big Brother featured in George Orwell's novel 1984, the concept of a “Big Brother” is also seen everywhere around us in our everyday lives. Our modern-day form of Big Brother is our own government and the way it keeps surveillance over us. The way the United States and many other modern-day countries govern these days, with all their new advanced technology, we citizens are never truly alone. Our every move is constantly being watched. The difference between our modern-day Big Brother and the Big Brother in the novel 1984 is that our monitors claim to want to keep us safe, not to brainwash us to attain total power and control.
For many readers, the ending of George Orwell’s 1984 is a kick to the gut. Throughout the novel George Orwell teases the audience with the idea that there was going to be some sort of happy ending, and that Winston as an individual could live his life without control of the Party. In the end, he becomes brainwashed just like every other member of society. However, as readers we should have been able to pick up that the real end came in the beginning. When Winston began writing in that journal it was the beginning of the end for him and although he claims he won the victory over himself, the only real victor, in reality, is the Party. Orwell uses the book, and specifically the last chapter, to give a warning of what it would be like to live in a totalitarian society under complete control of the government.
George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four portrayed a fictional character named ‘Big Brother,’ whom acted as the enigmatic dictator in a totalitarian state (Orwell, 1949). In the society where every citizen is under the surveillance of ‘Big Brother,’ most conform to the rulings and orders of the authorities out of fear, with the exception of a few.
Ultimately, common ideas found in the novel 1984, totalitarianism, surveillance, and lack of privacy are also ubiquitous in modern society and government. Big Brother and modern day government have been able to control its citizens through surveillance equipment, and fear all for a little more power. There is much to learn from such an undesirable form of society much like the one of Oceania in 1984. Examining Big Brother government closely, alarming connections can be made to real-world government actions in the United States and the cruel world within Orwell's book.
I strongly agree with Fromm’s viewpoints and interpretations of Orwell’s 1984 text. He warns that the future federal powers will dehumanize society and leave everyone alienated. Thus, I agree with Fromm to the extent that he acknowledges the fact that humanity can indeed cease to exist as a result of our own self-destruction as well as the effect of our actions. Many of his opinions and warnings expressed by Orwell to an extent appear in contemporary society.
The fictional world of 1984 is best described as bleak. In the aftermath of the fall of capitalism and nuclear war, the world has been divided among three practically identical totalitarian nation-states. The novel takes place in London, which has become a part of Oceania, the nation state comprising the Americas and western Europe. A state of perpetual war and poverty is the rule in Oceania. However, this is merely a backdrop, far from the most terrifying aspect of life in 1984. Oceania is governed by a totalitarian bureaucracy, personified in the image of Big Brother, the all-knowing/ all-seeing godlike figure that represents the government. Big Brother is best described as a "totalitarian socialist dictator, a political demagogue and religious cult leader all rolled into one." So great is the power of Big Brother that the reader is unsure whether he actually exists or is simply a propaganda tool of the government. The party of Big Brother, Ingsoc (English Social...
In today’s society, most people don’t realize the government is taking advantage of their power. The government is here to protect and keep society safe, but I believe they are abusing their authority against us for their own benefits. In the novel 1984, George Orwell is a foreshadowing to our present day living. Orwell brings forth a feeling of hopelessness and paranoia. The government can use the term reasonable cause to get a warrant to tap phones, to intercept our mail and use satellites to view us without our knowledge. The novel portrays these issues with “Big Brother is Watching.”
Nineteen Eighty-Four was written in the past yet seems to show very interesting parallels to some of today’s societies. Orwell explains many issues prominent throughout the book in which his main characters attempt to overcome. He shows how surveillance can easily corrupt those in control and how those in control become corrupt by the amount of power. Those with power control the society and overpower all those below. The novel shows what could potentially happen to our current society if power ends up leading to corruption.
The novel 1984 by George Orwell presents the readers an image of a totalitarian society that explores a world of control, power, and corruption. The main idea of government control presents itself in the novel by protecting and listening to the people of Oceania. However, Orwell suggests giving too much power to the government is a mistake because eventually the decisions they make will not be about the people anymore but rather themselves. In 1984, the power and corruption the party has is overwhelming for the people. There are no ways around the beliefs of the Party, the party attempts to control and eventually destroy any mental or physical resistance against their beliefs. The agenda for the party is to obtain mind control over its people and force them to adore their leader. The methods the Party uses to achieve its goal are: the use of constant propaganda and surveillance, the rewriting of history, and Room 101.
The struggle for complete domination and power has been apparent in the past, most notably when Germany and Russia conflicted to maintain control in World War 2. In 1984, written by George Orwell, a totalitarian society seeks unlimited power by constantly monitoring it citizens. This monitoring was used to manipulate the minds and alter the thoughts of the people of Oceania. The population of Oceania is led to support ideas, which they do not truly believe. The lack of privacy and personal belief in citizens induces the idea of “doublethink”, where two contradictory ideas are both accepted. This is utilized by George Orwell to demonstrate political power and dominance. The Party forces the people to believe that “WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY,
