Dogs all around the world have different behaviors. Some can be very calm and professional like, loud and messy, kind and cuddly, or dangerous and aggressive. Specifically, the dogs who are on the more vicious side, all have a reason for their being. Their misbehavior doesn’t happen by nature, something has caused these pets to go wild. Abuse is the main cause for this type of behavior. Because of this, overpopulating shelters and even dogs themselves are being put down due to the abusive actions they have been through. It is difficult for dogs to be able to trust anyone or anything that comes their way. As newborn puppies, they aren’t familiar with anything yet. They don’t know the bad thats coming towards them. As they begin to grow, the
more people start looking into them. Whether its for protection, modeling, or cruelty. Dogfighting being a common form of abuse. Dogfighting is the illegal use of dogs being put to fight each other for big amounts of money. In an ASPCA article called, A Closer Look to Dog Fighting, it states, “...Using the animals...to demonstrate their strength and prowess. When a dog loses, this can cause the owner of the dog to lose not only money...and may lead to brutal actions against the dog.” When a dog loses in a very brutal fight, the owner will most likely be angry and end up taking their anger out on the dog. The dog will be abused and thrown away out to the streets. Because of the abuse the dog went through, it will now become fearful, it will fear other dogs and people who will approach them. Their only response is to be aggressive and attack, but they attack out of fear. The number of homeless dogs in the U.S. is about 3.9 million dogs, according to an article by Dosomething.org. Dogs in the streets are exposed to unsanitary environments and lack of clean water and food. With this condition, the dog may die from malnutrition or even in an accident such as being hit by a car. On the other hand, the local animal shelter would pick up the dog and take it in and attempt to nourish it and bring it back to its healthy state. It’s not as easy as it seems. The dog may attempt to bite the person trying to tame it. Again, this is done out of fear. All the abuse the dog has been through, it will only assume it will get beaten again. When taken to the shelter, the dogs are put up for adoption once they are in a healthy state again. Yet, there are still millions of abused dogs out without homes. Shelters become packed. They become so overpopulated that they have had to put down many animals. Dog owners don’t have it easy. The dog may still have an aggressive and frightened behavior. A dog owner who has adopted a former dog fighter has lived with these effects of what abuse has done to the poor dogs. “We were so upset...humans could do this to her. She was not angry, she was scared,” stated a dog owner from Thedodo.com. Overtime dogs will get better with the help of the love their owners provide and they will be able to regain that trust they once had. In conclusion, dogs from the start, are exposed to bad actions. It’ll mostly be involved with abuse such as dogfighting. Because of this, shelters are overpopulating and having to put down more and more animals because they don’t have a home to go to. This bad behavior can lead to harm to those who adopt the dog. Many dogs have been saved, but there are still millions of them filling the streets each day all for the same reason.
Most of the dogs on this list are common household pets, like the Labrador retriever, and are normally non-aggressive and very friendly. Many times these dogs show no sign of aggression and pose no threat to society. Perspective One Breed-specific laws were put in place with the expectation to help prevent dog bites and attacks. The State and Federal government both came to the conclusion that this is a positive way to promote safety from dog attacks. “Both state and federal courts consistently uphold the constitutionality of breed-specific pit bull laws.... ...
Dogs have impacted the lives of 44% of American families and homes. People use dogs for much more than just a family friend. Dogs are used for special needs, assisting police, and hunting and tracking. Dogs should be appreciated and never taught to fight or be neglected. Dog fighting is unethical because man’s best friend shouldn’t have to fight for their lives.
Sadly aggression is one of the most noted accounts for a dog owner to make the judgment to give up a pet. Sometimes, if a dog is considered behaviorally unsound and cannot be rehabilitated, euthanization is the last drastic step.
Pit bulls are not the only targeted breed. Over time many different breeds have been said to be intrusive. The most targeted breed currently are Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Pit bulls. Before the late 1980's, it was very rare to hear stories about pit bulls attacking. Over the years pit bulls have been trained to fight. They have been thrown in a pit with other dogs and have no other choice than to fight in order to protect themselves. People have caused the aggression in animals, animals aren't born with these
You want your dog to understand that you are the person to look to when they question what is right or wrong. This is done by being firm, yet kind with the dog. You don't want your dog to listen to you out of fear, but out of respect. Setting boundaries is very important in gaining respect. Sit down with your family and discuss what is and what is not appropriate for the dog to be doing. Perhaps you have no problem with a dog on the furniture, but kitchen entrance is not allowed.
Despite dogs being considered man’s best friend, a huge number of work dogs are abused every day and once their job is done they’re often beaten, and starved and abandoned. In the book Call of the Wild the author Jack london shows how the animals are abused mainly through the Humans who own them.
But, let’s face it, there are certain dog breeds that demand their owners be aware of negative opinion; and it is the owners’ primary responsibility to implement careful training and socialization of their pups in order to bring an understanding and acceptance of the breed by the general public. The breeds currently labeled aggressive include Akita, Boxer, Chow, Dalmatian, Doberman, Alaskan Husky, American or Staffordshire Pit Bull, Presa Canario, and Rottweiler. These dogs are mid-size to large and generally muscular, with large heads. The responsible dog owner must help his dog, especially the so-called “aggressive” breed, learn how to cope and respond, in a healthy and acceptable manner, to the spectrum of people, animals, places and things he might encounter throughout his life. Dog obedience classes, regular visits to the vet, playtime with other dogs and regular walks outdoors will help the dogs (and their masters) develop confidence and ease. This goes a long way in helping them become resilient in the face of unsettling situations.
inflicted abuse, is frowned upon by society, other types of dog abuse are just ignored and
These kinds of people ruin the breed's reputation. A dog that’s been trained to attack will attack but if you raise a puppy properly and just train them to do non-harmful things like sit and shake there should never be a problem with aggression. There will still be those dominant outbursts but like I previously pointed out, you just need to control them. According to Puppy Tube The doberman is on the list of top ten aggressive dogs. I can see why they might say this because upwards of two thousand dobermans alone worked alongside the Marines in WWII. To contradict this fact I have to point out that over half of the dogs in service were used as messenger dogs and scout dogs. A good example of how nice they can be is when forty doberman pinschers were sent into ground zero to look for survivors to drag out to safety. In the effort, this group of search and rescue dogs saved an estimated three hundred wounded victims of the 9/11 Terrorist attack. These dogs have gone from trusted soldiers, police dogs, search and rescue workers, to a “dangerous” dog that no one wants to be around. I should also point out how protective they can
...are loyal companions and deserve the same amount of loyalty and love back. It’s hard to fathom how one can be so cruel to an innocent animal with no reason. Everyone is quick to blame the dog when a child is bitten, or when the dog is loud and becomes a nuisance to the neighborhood when in reality, the owner is the real problem. There’s no real solution to the issue of dogs being neglected, but it should be brought to people’s attention that if you are not capable of being responsible then you should not be allowed to have the privilege of owning a dog. All dogs really want is attention and love and it’s absolutely heartbreaking that people can even think about harming a dog in any way other than smothering them with affection. We should think about putting the owners on a leash instead of the dogs because I think that their irresponsibility is the real danger here.
There has been over 2 million pet dogs that have ended up at animal shelters. Researchers reported that 65% of the people who left there dogs at shelters was because of bad behavior which is sickening. Dogs that are being poorly exercised and sosialized are one of the main causes of this problem. People try to fix it by breaking the law and letting there pet run free in vacant lots but with the risk of being reported or of the dog getting hit by a car.
How would you feel if your beloved pet was taken from your backyard, forced to fight and left to die? Dog fighting is a dangerous underground organised crime that is illegal in every state in Australia and all 50 states in America. The involvement of Michael Vick, a famous NFL quarterback, in a dogfighting ring scandal and his prison sentence created publicity for the dangers and gruesomeness of dogfighting. While many knew vaguely of the practise, not nearly enough people understand the true cruelty that goes into dog fighting. Most of the dogs used in the fights are a certain breed, Pit-bulls, Rottweiler’s, Mastiffs and crossbreds, this means many owners buy, trade or even steal dogs from peoples’ backyards. Dog
Dogs are wonderful creatures. They are loyal, dependable companions if given the opportunity. In recent years I have come to the opinion that we could learn something from these animals. We should also take a look at the manner in which they are being treated. Abandonment, irresponsible breeding, and neglect are only some of the ways that humans are failing the canine species.
He was left outside in a fence covered in red dirt with other puppies and dogs with no dog house in sight, we didn’t know what kind of life he had for the first six weeks of his life but we didn’t think it was a great one. He was a little shy at first it took him days to warm up to us. But he was so cute and fat, you couldn’t resist that face! We had suspicions that he had been abused when we picked him up, but once we saw he didn’t like the broom when I was sweeping the floors it was no longer a suspicion. We have overcome so much with our dog Otis, he recently had his first birthday in November. That’s all it takes is a loving home to change an animal’s life around. Even though Otis just turned one he still has his moments when he wants to back himself up into a corner and growl and act out. Sometimes Otis is afraid of men still and tries to nip them. Even though that is frowned upon I think he’s just trying to protect me. You cannot expect an abused animal to be perfect you have to pick up the pieces and put them back together
On January 2015, a report came out saying that over the past three years, on average every year, there were one thousand nine hundred animal cruelty cases (Statistic Brain Research Institute). Of those reported cases, nine percent were from animal fighting. Dog fighting is a major moral issue across the nation. Dog fighting is the act of forcing dogs to fight to the death in a pit or box for the enjoyment of their owners and the public. The argument against dog fighting could be explained through the fact that dogs are moral agents as in they are autonomous, they make decisions, virtue ethics, the owners are not being virtuistic by participating is raising these dogs to fight and utilitarianism, dog fighting does not promote the greatest amount
