Abuse and addiction in adolescence Adolescence is a critical time for development for identity development and formation. A combination of social, physical and cognitive changes occurs during this stage of life. Erik Erikson referred to this time as identity crisis, “crisis” meaning a turning point rather than a debilitating event. Erikson acknowledged that identity issues arise throughout each stage of development, however he specifically advised us that identity formation was the “developmental task” of adolescence (1968). Further, specific portions of an adolescence brain that focuses on reward and motivation become highly sensitive during this developmental stage. The brain functioning of an adolescent is designed to seek out desirable actions, however the portions of the brain that would exhibit the impulse control are not yet fully developed. Due to the acute focus of reward, adolescence individuals may view drugs as enjoyable, due to the desirable reactions resulted in the use of a substance (Squeglia, Jacobus, Tapert, 2009). Desirable reactions could be explained as fitting in with the crowd, minimizing anxiety when being around certain peers, or numbing pain of trauma as a result of abuse. Since drugs and alcohol can react on the pleasure sensors in the brain, drug addiction could occur. The development of religious identity begins to come into question with further exploration. Even though the adolescent may eventually adopt beliefs that were similar to their childhood beliefs, the process of exploration is important in achieving a religious identity.
Lastly, we look at identity without knowing it adolescents are searching for the answers to the question, “who am I?”. Although this is an important part of development for this stage it didn’t just being in this stage nor do adolescents have the capability to figure it all out. While growing up children are pushed one way or another by parents and peers some are pushed towards academics while others athletics. But how influential are parents and peers?
Erickson’s Psychosocial Theory is comprised of eight developmental stages ranging throughout the lifespan from infancy to adulthood (Boyd, 2015). It is a time when the adolescent’s sense of self or identity is becoming much more clear and they are beginning to understand their role in society, starting to question the morals of others and contemplating their own moral and ethical beliefs (Davies et al., 2012). Identity can be thought of as the sum of a person’s personality, including their concept of self, and evolves over the course of a lifetime (Kroger, 2003). The major events that define identity usually begin in adolescence- the time that an individual begins facing and directly responding to life challenges (Kroger, 2003). Erik Erikson is often regarded as the father of modern identity theory. Erikson’s theory focused on healthy personality and highlighted the major processes that comprise identity development (Kroger, 2003). According to Erikson, a healthy personality is based on the totality of three different aspects of identity: a person’s ego identity, personal identity, and their social identity (Kroger, 2003). These three aspects are constantly evolving through a process of self discovery that takes place across personal, societal and social contexts (Kroger, 2003). Erikson theorized that these developments occurred in predictable and connected stages of psychosocial development- meaning that the developments occur at set times in an individuals life and that success in later stages is depending on the outcome of earlier stages (Kroger, 2003). Biological influences combined with societal and social expectations contribute to how well people learn to adapt to their environments (2013). According to Erikson, there are eight stages of development. Within these states, there are different psychological, emotional and cognitive tasks. In order to adjust, individuals must learn to develop these tasks. During adolescence, Erikson states that each person needs to navigate through the development task of ‘‘Identity vs. Identity confusion ’’ (2013). He defined this task by stating that adolescent children must learn to develop a sense of self and establish independence. Prior to this stage of development, a person’s parents largely influence their identity. In this stage the adolescent children begin to explore and develop their identity outside of their parents’ influence (Hill, Bromell, Tyson, & Flint, 2007). Adolescents are generally more egocentric at this stage and have an increased sense of self-consciousness. They also have a strong desire to conform to peer influence and develop concerns regarding their appearance. They develop concern about their level of competence in relation to their peer group as well. As peer influence increases, during this stage, parental influence decreases (Ashford & LeCroy, 2013; Hill et. al, 2007). Conflict generally increases between parent and child at this stage of development (2007).
During adolescence emotional reactivity is heightened, and the social environment is changing as adolescents spend more time with their peers than adults (Casey, 2008). To an adolescent, the value of positive information, as well as negative information may be exaggerated which leads to greater emotional reactivity and sensitivity during this growth period (Casey, 2008). Identity is first confronted in adolescence between the ages 12 – 19 years old, because of physical and hormonal changes in the body. Finding one’s self and discovering one’s own identity is crucial for positive development. People develop their own personal identity in different ways, however, most identities are developed through the experiences and crises that a person faces throughout life. These crises can be observed through Erik Erikson’s 8 physical, emotional, and psychological stages of development (Mudrey, Psychosocial Timeline, 2018, p. 1). In textbook (Berk, 2017), Erickson describes the psychosocial development of adolescence as a time when the individual establishes a new sense of identity or self, which leads to independence or individuation from parents and reliance on peers. The adolescent examines and redefines self, family, peer group, and community, and an adolescent who is unable to establish meaningful definitions experiences confusion in one or more life roles. Parental separation and individuation are critical developmental tasks faced by late adolescents, which can impact their academic, social, and emotional adjustment to college.
Humans are environmentally and genetically predisposed to developing a motivated addictive behavior. Addiction is a brain disease and a behavior. All behaviors are choices. Choices that adolescences make at a young age directly affect the outcomes of their futures. Many factors contribute to an adolescence becoming an addict or exhibiting a drug seeking behavior. Nearly all drugs of abuse increase dopamine release. Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter in drug abuse and addiction. Dopamine plays a role in reward motivated behaviors, motor control and important hormones. It’s known as the “feel good hormone” which is why people abuse drugs that increase the release of dopamine. Since life is unpredictable, our brains have evolved the ability to remodel themselves in response to our experiences. The more we practice an activity the more neurons developed in order to fine-tune that activity causing addictive behaviors to be detrimental.
In Erikson’s Identity vs. Role Confusion stage, I thought, “Who am I?” countless times like many other adolescents. I occupied much of my time trying to construct a firm identity of myself, which I now realized did more harm than good. Letting myself explore different interests would have helped me find my identity than me trying to fake some firm identity.
