You can argue Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address is the best speech ever given for many reasons due to the richness of the text. Abraham Lincoln gave this speech when tensions were very high in the United States when the North was fighting the South in a bloody Civil War no not the Marvel movie “Captain America Civil War” the real Civil War where the north fought for the freedom of slaves. Throughout history there have been many great leaders. Many leaders who have changed the shape of America and also soldiers of today’s Army. One leader that comes to mind and has shaped me into the leader I am today is Abraham Lincoln. When I look at Abraham Lincoln and what he has done, I think of what Army Leadership manual ADRP 6-22 defines what a leader should be and how leadership is based off of attributes and competencies.

The Lyceum Address was given by Abraham Lincoln at age 28. He wanted equality and this is what the Lyceum Address is about. Lincoln wanted slaves to be free, he wanted women to vote and Abraham wanted to raise awareness of the dangers of slavery in the United States of America. When President Lincoln first called for troops to put down the confederate rebellion, he made no connection between this action and an attempt to end slavery. In fact, he explicitly stated "the utmost care will be observed to avoid any devastation, any destruction of, or interference with, property..." At this point, slavery was not yet integral to the struggle, it was much more important for the Union to air on the side of political prudence and avoid angering loyal boarder states. However, despite this lack of political dialogue, many abolitionists, slaves, and free blacks felt the war to preserve the union could also be a war to end slavery. In the end, they were right, as military need overwhelmed potential political dangers, slaves and the institution of slavery became a central issue in the civil war.

He had just beaten out George B. McClellan for president. McClellan wanted the country split into two- one slave-holding and one free. So now, instead of staying passive like he did in his first Inaugural Address, he took a stand in his second.
