On October 26, 1864 Abraham Lincoln gave one of his most important speeches. He said, “Threats of breaking up the Union were freely made; and ablest public men of the day became seriously alarmed...” (Lewis 36). The sixteenth president of the United States has had a more substantial life than people thought. All around the country an impact had been made on all the residents there. This was made by one of the best presidents in history. Honest Abe was a wise man who affected the country and helped make the country what it is today. One of the states he resided in the most was Illinois. Abraham Lincoln made a political future for himself, kept the Union together, freed the slaves and created a new party for the United States that still exists today all while unknowingly becoming one of the most well known and historic presidents ever.
Seeing as Lincoln started at the state level in his politics he visited various cities. These cities included Galena, Galesburg, Peoria, Bloomington, Springfield, Rock Island, Chicago, New Salem, and Decatur (Crowther). He first arrived in Galena in 1832, as a soldier. His first political and most famous visit was in 1856 when he campaigned for John Fremont. Fremont supported Lincoln’s senatorial campaigns and helped him with his political developments. In Galena, he was introduced to many people. One of these people was Elihu B. Washburne. Washburne was a fellow lawyer and politician. Washburne and Lincoln certainly became powerful political allies. Although Washburne helped him and was a good ally, his closest friend was actually Edward Baker. They even kept in touch when he moved on to other towns and cities (Abraham Lincoln in Galena). One of these towns he moved on to was a site of the mo...

He died before he could help with the reconstruction of the United States of America (History.com).
Abraham Lincoln may not have completely reconstructed the United States of America but he certainly did set the project in motion. The people he left behind were willing to work together to create the nation that would end up being where many live today. With the abolition of slavery, the strong leadership and the honesty of it all Lincoln is undoubtedly one of the greatest presidents in history.
John Wilkes Booth was a famous actor, and could have had many assassination chances, including Lincoln’s second inauguration. Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. Lincoln has made one of the biggest impacts in United States History by saving the Union during the American Civil War and emancipating the slaves. Lincoln has always been considered anti-slavery, though he seemed to become more of an abolitionist as his term went by. Unfortunately, Lincoln was assassinated in a drama theatre in 1865. This formed many issues because the president after Lincoln was a southerner named Andrew Johnson. Johnson did not execute Lincoln’s plans correctly and did not understand his visions. Lincoln had solutions to many issues that Johnson did not know about. On top of that President Johnson was not a man who was greatly liked. Although Lincoln was

The sixteenth president of the United States was none other than “Honest Abe” himself, or better known as Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln may have looked thin and weak physically, but he was actually pretty strong. He was also a fierce, sharp-witted lawyer and politician. He was never afraid of the challenges thrown at him. He held firmly to the things he believed to be right, even when the “majority” did not agree with him. Abraham Lincoln faced opposition as president because of his divergent moral views, ideas, decisions, and beliefs.
During the Abraham Lincoln’s short time as president, he managed not only to save a nation deeply divided and at war with itself, but to solidify the United States of America as a nation dedicated to the progress of civil rights. Years after his death, he was awarded the title of ‘The Great Emancipator.’ In this paper, I will examine many different aspects of Lincoln’s presidency in order to come to a conclusion: whether this title bestowed unto Lincoln was deserved, or not. In order to fully understand Lincoln, it is necessary to understand the motives that drove this man to action. While some of his intentions may not have been for the welfare of slaves, but for the preservation of the Union, the actions still stand. Abraham Lincoln, though motivated by his devotion to his nation, made the first blows against the institution of slavery and rightfully earned his title of ‘The Great Emancipator.’
Without a doubt, there have been great presidents throughout American history. The subject of the matter is debatable about who has done the best job for the position. When you ask Americans who the greatest president ever to serve is, five names would be repetitive: Andrew Jackson, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is more than likely always at the top of the list. He is commonly known as the best president of the United States and I can't help but agree. President Lincoln has had numerous achievements, such as ending slavery, modernizing the economy, and preserving the Union.
Abraham Lincoln wrote one of the greatest speeches in American history known as the Gettysburg Address. It was not only used as a dedication to the fallen troops of the North and South, but as a speech to give the Union a reason to fight and attempt to unite the divided nation. The sixteenth president’s handling of his speech at Gettysburg demonstrated how the effectiveness of juxtaposition, repetition, and parallelism, could bring unity to a nation deeply divided on beliefs. His speech touched the hearts of many and indirectly put an end to the Civil War. Lincoln may have been considered a tyrant at the time but he was a great leader of a nation, a war, and a democracy.
Abraham Lincoln is regarded by many Americans as the greatest president to ever hold office in the history of the United States, and his reputation is definitely well deserved. Lincoln wasn't scared to stand up and fight for what he knew was right. He was convinced that within the branches of government, the presidency alone was empowered not only to uphold the Constitution, but also to protect, and defend it. Lincoln was able to lead our country and preserve the Union, keeping the United States from splintering during the devastating times of the Civil War. As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization, and he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that changed the war into a battle for freedom and declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. That November, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address, which stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. He dedicated the battlefield to the soldiers who had perished, and called on the living to finish the task the dead soldiers had begun. (Donald, 1995) Lincoln believed that democracy could be a lasting form of government. He showed a nobility of character that had worldwide appeal, and he was a man of great integrity. However, Lincoln was not only the 16th president of the United States, he was an American hero. Lincoln was a well-rounded individual and he had numerous outstanding qualities. However, it is important to remember that Lincoln also led a private life, complete with close friends and family.
There is no doubt that Abraham Lincoln is widely regarded as one of the great American presidents. The general public, when asked about Lincoln, will often tell the tale of a great man. Holding their head high, they will embark on the journey of a benevolent leader, praising the man who envisioned a new America: a great country of racial equality, and the pillar of human liberty. There are some, however, who have quite the opposite view.
Major Henry Rathbone, who was sitting in the box with his fiancé and President Lincoln’s wife watching the play, jumped up and lunged at John Wilkes Booth. Booth was able to jump from the box after stabbing Major Rathbone but ended up breaking his leg. He escaped Washington D.C. and escaped to Virginia and where he died on April 26, 1865. Richard Garrett who was eleven years old at the time, gave an eyewitness account of Booth’s death at his family’s farm. Garrett’s lectures were published in the Confederate Veteran and according to him, Booth had arrived at the farm without the family knowing of President Lincoln’s death due to mail being halted after the collapse of the Confederate government. During dinner, Garrett states that they informed Booth of Johnston’s army surrendering which in turn meant the Civil War was over and Booth had failed to save the Confederacy even with President Lincoln dying. Later, he states that they learned of Lincoln’s death and that there was a reward out for Booth. Lieutenant Colonel Everton Conger eventually tracked down Booth and his location, however Booth refused to surrender stating he would rather come out and fight and then began setting the barn he was hiding in on fire. Sergeant Boston Corbett then shot Booth because he saw a pistol raised at him, however there are contradicting reports against that as well. Booth by now was wounded in the neck and paralyzed as he was dragged out of the barn and put on the front porch of the Garrett’s
Over the course of the past years, there have been many presidents and debates whether or not they have been beneficial to the United States of America. Even though there have been other great presidents, people should know that Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president was unquestionably an astonishing president. He was a great president because of how he: lead the union to victory, helped slaves to freedom, and issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
