Abraham Lincoln had many failures in his career as a politician such as running for senate twice and losing both times (Dwyer, 31), but because of his perseverance he had success after success when he was elected as the 16th president of the United States. Abraham had many challenges after his election as well, but his ability to solve problems and push through hardships made him a great president. People didn’t believe in Lincolns ideas when he ran for government positions, which made it really hard to run for president (Etulian, 26). When he got elected the problems he faced with the civil war and freeing slaves had a lasting legacy on the people that came after him (Diaz, 52). Lincoln faced many hardships in his career but was able to push …show more content…
through them and have an impact that still affects people today. Abraham Lincoln started off not even being able to get a seat in the senate.
Abraham Lincolns many ideas about the abolition of slavery made it very hard to run for a position in government. Lincoln lost his second run for a senatorial seat to Stephen Douglas while they talked about slavery and whether or not it should be incorporated into Western Territories (Etulain 26). This shows that because of his stance on slavery, which was new and scary for the government officials and the people, he lost elections so becoming president was no easy task. The south also didn’t like his views on slavery. As soon as Lincoln was elected, before he was even inaugurated, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas seceded from the United States (Etulain 26). This shows that even though lots of people were willing to take extreme measures, he still …show more content…
fought for what he believed in. Finally, even though the southerners didn’t like him, the north did. Even though some people hated his ideas, people still believed in him and his morals (Dwyer 31). This shows that he was able to persuade people to back him up in his multiple ideas and he was able to find support to help with his challenges. Even though Lincoln faced many challenges, he was able to face and overcome his challenges to becoming president. One of Lincoln’s biggest challenges and accomplishment as president was freeing the slaves.
Lincoln was the president of the Union during the civil war. This gave him many challenges like finding generals like George G. Meade to lead his army. He also needed some big military feats to beat the south which he was able to do (Goodheart 9). This evidence suggests that he not only was smart with politics, but he was also able to help his military. At the end of the war Lincoln was able to pass the Emancipation Proclamation and free all the slaves while he was threatened by the senate. The senate told Lincoln that if he couldn’t pass it, they would bring down his administration (Dwyer 31). This shows that he truly was trying to make sure everyone was happy about freeing the slaves before he did anything, to the point it made people upset. Because of this, Lincoln was able to almost completely abolish slavery by the end of his term. Lincoln was able to end the practice of slavery peaceably (Dwyer 31). This proves that Lincoln was a political mastermind and his patience was able to help make most Americans happy. Lincoln was able to use his political savvy and power to make the United States a truly free
country. Abraham left one of the biggest civil rights legacies in history after his assassination. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 15, 1865. The assassination took place in Ford’s Theater just three days before a speech about reconstruction after the war (Etulain 26). This evidence shows that even though most people did believe in Abrahams ideas. Some didn’t and were willing to go to the extremes to try to prove they were right. Although there was still racism and segregation after his presidency, he helped make major steps to equal rights for all people. He was able to change a country based off of slavery into a country were over three million black slaves were freed (Diaz 52). This shows that he fought for what was right even though it was a hard journey. Without Abraham Lincoln and his steps toward “all men are created equal”, there still could’ve been slavery today. He was able to free so many people and without that how would Rosa Parks be able to protest by staying put on a bus, or how would Martin Luther King Jr. be able to speak in front of a ton of people about civil rights (Diaz 52). This evidence shows that Abraham Lincoln was a major turning point in civil rights, even though he came 100 years before Martin Luther King Jr. Abraham Lincoln left a big legacy by starting the civil rights movements and without him, things could be much worse for minorities in the United States. Lincoln had a hard time getting started in government, but when he became president, he left a lasting impact by freeing slaves and helped make a push towards equal rights. Lincoln was able to persevere through all of the hardships he faced during his career which made him a great leader and helped him free the slaves. Without Lincoln’s ability to keep trying whenever he failed and his ability to lead people and fight in what we believed in, we may still have slavery today.
Lincoln became president in January of 1860. During this time, many of the Southern states began to secede, plunging the United States into a Civil War. At the beginning, the war was about state’s rights, but it eventually became about slave rights. In the end, the Union won, America was reunited, and the slaves were freed. Many say that Lincoln was the Great Emancipator because of this act, but did you know he didn’t want the freed slaves to have the same rights as whites? From the time he was involved in the political realm to the day he was assassinated Lincoln was just another politician. If he was really the Great Emancipator he would have been more focused on the slaves than the Union. He also wouldn’t have issued the Emancipation
Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. Lincoln has made one of the biggest impacts in United States History by saving the Union during the American Civil War and emancipating the slaves. Lincoln has always been considered anti-slavery, though he seemed to become more of an abolitionist as his term went by. Unfortunately, Lincoln was assassinated in a drama theatre in 1865. This formed many issues because the president after Lincoln was a southerner named Andrew Johnson. Johnson did not execute Lincoln’s plans correctly and did not understand his visions. Lincoln had solutions to many issues that Johnson did not know about. On top of that President Johnson was not a man who was greatly liked. Although Lincoln was
Out of the 43 presidents that have served for the United States, the most recognizable and exceptional president by far was Abraham Lincoln. Through childhood, Lincoln seemed always interested in politics, not knowing how much publicity and significance he would get. The three authors of the Grace Bedell and the President’s Beard, Lincoln’s Famous Address, and The Rise of a President all agree with the fact that Lincoln was a fanonimal president. During just four years of office, Lincoln made a memorable picture for himself, led a war between many different parts of the U. S., and made one of the greatest speeches the nation has ever seen.
President Lincoln was elected into presidency at a horrible time for the country but he still fought to do the best he could. After the civil war the main focus of Lincoln was to rebuild the North but still keep the South happy. His plans consisted of making the North's reconstruction a main focal point and distributing 10% of the damages done to the south to aid their reconstruction. President Lincoln thought that the states that seceded last should be given less guilt than the ones who seceded first. He gave more money to Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Virginia and he treated them better because they were the last to secede. Along with his plans for reconstruction came the Radical Republicans who were a small minority in congress. They were very strict on giving all rights to African Americans and wanted to punish the south. All of these ideas and plans for Lincoln were all good ideas and could have been successful but they came to an abrupt end when Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in 1865.
Abraham Lincoln’s greatest challenge during his presidency was preserving the Union during the Civil War after the Southern states seceded from the Union. There were many dividing issues in the U.S. before his election in 1860, and his presidential victory was the final straw that led to the Civil War. The North and the South were already separating due to regional differences, socially, politically, culturally, and economically. Slavery was one of the biggest factors that led to the division between the North and the South. Preserving the Union while half of the country refused to regard federal law while in secession was extremely challenging, yet Abraham Lincoln decided to fight war against the South not only for the sake of abolishing slavery, but most importantly for the sake of preserving the Union. He was dedicated to fighting for the equality of all men in the U.S., as mentioned in his famous Gettysburg Address: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." He used this to argue a basic point: if all men are created equal, then all men are free. His House Divided speech showed his determination to keep the...

Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860, Southern states began progress from the Union. James Monroe, the fifth president of the U.S., ran this country smoothly with a level head. He was a slow thinker, who looked at all the possibilities before making a decision. He was a genuine person, who seemed more normal than any who came before him. Although normal, he truly had a heart for his country that only a few could mimic (American Revolution). Overall James Monroe accomplished many things before his presidency, then went on to help maintain and produce growth like the country has never seen.

On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as president in the United State. But, the United States had been divided in the 1850s, due to the question about expansion of slavery and the rights of the slave owner. The issue of slavery had heated the nation to the boiling point. Fourth Months later, after Abraham presidential election, the seven states in the deep southern part of the United States, like South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia. Louisiana, and Texas, had seceded and seized many federal facilities. Although President Lincoln is the president of the United State, he still had no official powers to do anything about the Southern forming a new nation. On April 15, Lincoln called 75,000 volunteers to put down the Southern rebellion, and to reverse the seven states to vote in favor of session. After the nation drifted toward conclusion, Abraham Lincoln traveled all over the North, so he can make campaign speeches for the Republicans party. Abram Lincoln used his influence, as the leader of the Republican Party, by reaching out to the political leader of the Republican party, writing privately letters, demanded that the Republican party needs to hold firm to its opposition to the extension of slavery and to also reassure the southern that the Republicans composed no threats. When Civil War begins, Abr...
One of Lincoln’s most famous quotes is “A House divided against itself cannot stand.” This describes his presidency well- focusing on maintaining the Union. In the beginning, Lincoln tried to stay out of sensitive affairs involving the North and South in an attempt to keep them together, promising the South little interference. Despite this, he played a key role in passing the Thirteenth Amendment, doing whatever it takes to end slavery for good and ending the Civil War.
Abraham Lincoln is regarded by many Americans as the greatest president to ever hold office in the history of the United States, and his reputation is definitely well deserved. Lincoln wasn't scared to stand up and fight for what he knew was right. He was convinced that within the branches of government, the presidency alone was empowered not only to uphold the Constitution, but also to protect, and defend it. Lincoln was able to lead our country and preserve the Union, keeping the United States from splintering during the devastating times of the Civil War. As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization, and he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that changed the war into a battle for freedom and declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. That November, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address, which stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. He dedicated the battlefield to the soldiers who had perished, and called on the living to finish the task the dead soldiers had begun. (Donald, 1995) Lincoln believed that democracy could be a lasting form of government. He showed a nobility of character that had worldwide appeal, and he was a man of great integrity. However, Lincoln was not only the 16th president of the United States, he was an American hero. Lincoln was a well-rounded individual and he had numerous outstanding qualities. However, it is important to remember that Lincoln also led a private life, complete with close friends and family.
Lincoln's use of executive authority during the civil war is many times illegal and unjust; although his issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation may seem justified, Lincoln blatantly abused his power regarding civil rights. He did things like institute an unfair draft, suspend Constitutional rights, allocate military spending without Congress, and institute emancipation. Although some may justify these actions, they stomped on the Constitution.
Lincoln did many things while he was in office, one task he did was leading the union to victory during the Civil War. Lincoln helped the Union fight at their best during the Civil War. According to History.com he “proved to be a shrewd military strategist and a savvy leader” (History.com Staff).
