Forever immortalized by his strong, inspiring words and the mark he made on the country, Abraham Lincoln is arguably the best president the United States has ever seen. While an argument can be made for some of the other presidents, like George Washington and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a closer examination shows that Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was the greatest. Not only did President Lincoln keep the nation together during and after the civil war, but he also freed the United States from its original sin of slavery. His strong public speaking and refusal to turn away from his morals also show the prominence his character had in making him a great president. In a biography about Abraham Lincoln, the author writes, “When William A. Richardson, an Illinois Democrat, presented resolutions declaring the war just and necessary and Mexico the aggressor, Lincoln countered with resolutions declaring that Mexico, not the United States, had jurisdiction over ‘the spot’ where blood was first shed. These resolutions, together with one to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia, brought sharp criticism from the people back in Illinois. Lincoln was ‘not a patriot.’” This shows Lincoln’s fearlessness to speak out for what he believes is right. He spoke out against his own state, destroying his political career, all because he wanted to show that he did not agree with the unnecessary war the United States found itself in. As president, Lincoln was unafraid to pull people from his cabinet when they went against the beliefs of the Union. Both Secretary of State, William H. Seward, and Colonel John C. Fremont were removed from their positions as soon as Lincoln learned they went against his movement to end slavery (“Abraham Lincoln”).
