Defining Heroes: Inspirations in Our Lives

Heroes can be thought of as many different things, from super heroes and celebrities, to firefighters and even mothers. All of these figures have at least one thing in common. They all have the power to contribute, inspire, and truly be a hero of someone’s story. Heroic people have been around since the beginning of history. While a hero is someone who is determined, courageous, and genuine, they use those skills and characteristics to inspire the people around them to make good choices to better themselves and their world around them Heroes are what inspire other people to do good. They had both fought for what they believed in, which was liberty and freedom. Also, they continue to inspire more and more people today to do the same by setting examples for us to learn about many years later. First of all, Abraham Lincoln is known for using his power and authority to make the need for peace, justice, and freedom more known and respected. He bravely risked his life for the causes he was fighting for. Lincoln was also a very honored man, having the public look up to him for what he did. For instance, in the poem, O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman it states, “-for you the flag is flung - for you the bugle trills” (Whitman 69). This line provides us with more reasons to think of Lincoln as a better leader and a hero by describing how greatly people appreciated him. Likewise, Frederick Douglass is also a wonderful example of a heroic figure. He was a slave who lived in the 1800s. Similar to Lincoln, he risked his life and all he had for the sake of forming equality and freedom, and helping others. According to an autobiography written by Douglass himself, is states he, “never felt happier than when in an anti-slavery meeting” (Douglass 72). This further proves that he felt his best when he was trying to abolish what was wrong, and fight to save what is right, which is truly what wonderful heroes
