Abortion hurts Women “I've noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born” President Ronald Reagan. Is abortion safe for mothers? Is abortion similar to murder? These questions arise in everybody’s mind when it comes to abortion. Abortion is the mostly debated and controversial topic in America today and mostly discussed by pro-life and pro-choice groups. Pro-Choice are people who support abortion and Pro-Life are people who don’t. Abortion is a big topic when it comes to women both legally and morally. Every person’s views on abortion are based on his or her cultural, religious and political background. According to the definition, abortion is the termination of a fetus up to six months old. As for my view, I am strongly against the abortion or so called Planned Parenthood because I see this not only legally unacceptable but also morally wrong. Abortion should not be legalized because it is the killing of an innocent unborn child and can have a serious impact on the mother’s physical and psychological health. Abortion is one of the most discussed topics in Congress and every community in America and throughout the world. Many of us don’t notice but the laws regarding abortion have some effects on every one of us one way or the other. It might be someone we know who went through an abortion and might be having problem coping with it that we are unaware of. I don’t personally know anyone who went through abortion but I believe that abortion is no better than a murder of an innocent child. The decision to go through abortion is not women’s alone, many men pressurize women because they don’t want the child and neglect the consequences it can have on women’s health. Being a religious person, I believe that life begi... ... middle of paper ... ...some research along with the help of politics will help solve our problem of abortion. Presenting the results obtained after the psychological research to the political committee over at the Washington will help have a further look into the abortion laws. This will prevent future death of an innocent child and extensive damage to the mother’s body and mind. Officials should think both religiously and scientists to better understand the negative impact of abortion in our society, how our religion says it's immoral to kill an innocent child and how science says that the female body cannot take that damage and might suffer future consequences. I believe abortion should be allowed to women who had to go through very rough situations like rape or incest, rather than that we should prevent the death of a child. Some babies die by chance, but no baby should die by choice.

    Perhaps one of the most controversial issues debated between lawmakers and legislatures is abortion. Disputes concerning abortion began during the 1820s. By 1965, with a few exceptions, abortion had been made illegal in all states. Abortions were only permitted when the fetus was deformed, or if birth of the baby would harm the mother’s life. All of this changed however in 1973 during the landmark Supreme Court Case of Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion. The Supreme Court recognized that it is solely a mother’s choice whether to become a parent. The court also recognized that an issue as significant as child bearing warrants the highest level of constitutional protection. According to the Court, a state’s interest in potential life is not “compelling” until there is a status of viability—the point in pregnancy at which there is a reasonable possibility for the sustained survival of the fetus outside of the womb. The Court also affirmed that the right to privacy is not absolute and that a state does have a valid interest in safeguarding maternal health, maintaining medical standards, and protecting potential health. Under the Court’s decision, a state may, but is not required to prohibit abortion after viability, except when it is necessary to protect a women’s life or health.

In the beginning the problem was more about protecting doctors who have licenses. “Regular doctors thus had an incentive to ban abortion as part of an effort to drive irregular doctors many of whom were women out of business” (Straggenborg, p.211). The AMA (American Medical Association), which was the group that the regular doctors made, started a campaign that made the people believe that the white population was getting smaller and the population of the immigrants was rising. Abortions were made illegal to insure the stability of the population of American citizens. It seems odd that the only reason that abortions were made illegal at one point was because of money issues and a lust for white supremecy. It seemed to have nothing to do with the rights of a child or a woman. One of the reasons why abortion came into question in the beginning of the 1950s was due to the fact that a lot of doctors and lawyers were seeing many cases of illegal abortions and it was becoming a large social problem. Since there was a lack of competition for legal abortions, doctors found no problem making them legal again -- “They felt that abortions were justified under certain circumstances, and they begun to see the laws against abortion as an infringement on their own medical discretion” (Straggenborg, p.212). And so the issue arose again with many pro- choice groups speaking up. Then with court cases like Griswold v. Connecticut and Roe v. Wade, abortion again became legal in the United States.
