A. In this passage, Abilene is speaking to the reader. She is discussing to the reader that there seem to be stereotypes in every school she goes to (the ones that are rich, poor, comfortable, popular, etc.). When Abilene is telling the reader this, she is at the Sacred Heart of the Holy Redeemer Elementary School on the last day of school. She is explaining this to tell of her past life at different schools.
B. This quote shows how a person who rides trains and changes schools a lot knows about social stereotypes at schools. The quote explains quite clearly that there are many different types of people in all places that sets others apart. 1.b. I do not think I'd like to live in this society because it does not allow free thinking, or anything else that makes humans the way they are. There was nothing to differentiate people, nothing to like or dislike about each other. The only thing that was good was that everyone was treated equal. In America, we say this, but there are obvious exceptions. Such is not the case in the world depicted in the novel.
The opening paragraph of the story contains a metaphorical passage: "I stared at it in the swinging light of the subway car, and in the faces and bodies of the people, and in my own face, trapped in the darkness which roared outside"(349). This reference is significant because it is a contrast to the dismal society that the narrator and his brother Sonny live in. The darkness is the portrayal of the community of Harlem that is trapped, in their surroundings by physical, economic, and social barriers. The obvious nature of darkness has overcome the occupants of the Harlem community. The narrator, an algebra teacher, observes a depressing similarity between his students and his brother, Sonny. This is true because the narrator is fearful for his students falling into a life of crime and drugs, as did his brother. The narrator notes that the cruel realities of the streets have taken away the possible light from the lives of his brother and his students. The narrator makes an insightful connection between the darkness that Sonny faced and the darkness that the young boys are presently facing. This is illustrated in the following quote:
2. The structure of the essay allows it to prove one point completely and then refer to another. The author talks about sloppy people
	At the start of the movie, Allison was a person off in a corner by herself. She didn’t talk to anyone, she knew that she had a "place" in the society of school. This society of school, also know as clique groups, takes place at many schools, the one in the movie and most of all Richland High School. Like our school, this one has very many clique groups. In fact in the group of students in Saturday school, each clique group had a representative if you will. Allison knew that in the minds of others she was a loser because she was not popular and not pretty. So, we have here a girl who doesn’t think that she is pretty, and rates herself lower because of that. They don’t look at her personality or her inner being, but her outward appearance. She thinks that she is ugly because of what everyone else thinks. She has a low self-image and self-esteem simply because of what others think. What’s interesting about this passage is that it brings up these binaries of good vs. evil and God vs. the Devil.
