Abby Lee Miller’s mom Maryen Lorrain Miller was the start of Abby’s career in the dance world. Maryen started the ALDC and once Maryen got older, Abby learned the tricks and trades of the dance world and took over the business. Abby improved the dance company into a well known dance company.

Abby uses spacial ability by making sure that the dance team uses the stage to its full potenital. Abby will rearrange the dance so that it is spacial and all the dancers are the same distance apart to utilize the stage. Verbal Abilities: Abby uses her verbal skills very well.
She has a very loud voice that will scare you out of your shoes. When a member of the team makes a mistake during their routine, she will yell at the dance and give her the correct movement. Abby expects perfection in her dancers and if they do not give her what is she invisions for the dance she will verbally express her corrections. For example, Nia is a stiff kind of dancer. There are times where Nia needs to be graceful in her movements and Abby will scream at her until she performs the number correct or Nia will be out of a solo. Abby’s oral expression allows her to watch a routine and change up some choreography to the way she thinks will win the competition.
Reasoning Abilities: The dance moms are always causing problems with Abby and the other dance moms. When the moms get into arugments with the other moms, Abby steps in a gloats about her elite dance team and tells them their record of winnings. Another example of reasoning abilities is when Abby had enough of Kelly(Paige and Brooke) because they would leave after compeitions and Kelly would agrue with Abby. issues. Perceptual Abiltiies: As the ALDC team dances at practice with Abby and Gianna, Abby is able to create a coeograpghy that goes to each piece of music. Each dance is made with props and different types of moves that make the piece moving. Abby is able to pick out each of the dance moves that do not fit in the dance and change them. Also, Abby is able to pick out whose is right for the group dance and who will not be able to dance in sync with one another. Abby Lee Miller is a one of the finest dance teachers in the world. Many people need to understand that she is stict with her students because she wants perfection in each routine. As the ALDC team performs in front of judges, she wants the judges and the audience to be moved by the number. Being strict with her dance students now will show them the discipline for future jobs.

University of Northern Iowa Dance Marathon is an organization that raises money for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. The organization aims to provide emotional and financial support for families with children facing life threatening illnesses by raising money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and organizing events that increase student and community awareness. This money then is put towards things like research, education, equipment and pediatric ward enhancements so the children and families can feel a little more comfortable during their stay at the hospital. The big event was on March 1, 2014, but the organization completes events throughout the year to fundraise as much money as possible for the Miracle Network kiddos, like a 5k color run on campus, trick-or-treating for kids who can’t, and selling grilled cheese at midnight during homecoming celebrations.

Catherine Little first began her dance training when she was eight years old and studied tap, ballet, and eccentric dancing from an Erie dance studio that is no longer in operation. When Catherine was 14 she began her teacher training in New York City at Ned Wayburn School. By the end of the year Ms. Little began to teach students in the music room of her parent’s home and every summer was spent studying in New York. Katherine Dunham was an important figure in pushing for equality among all races. She became remembered through her unique twist she put on her ballet movements. Instead of pursuing traditional ballet, she choreographed ballets that incorporated African-American movements. Because of this, she has always been referred to as one of the “modern dance pioneers” (Cass 303). Even through struggles, she continued to strive to focus more on the dance traditions of other cultures and slowly help work towards the end of oppression towards particular races.

There is something beautiful about dance, but there is something more beautiful about dancing with others. When a group of 13 girls and 1 boy can come together from 14 different ways of life and move together as one, then a dance team become more than just a dance team. This was not something that happened over night, it took time, effort and about 7 conversations with our coaches about our values. Without all of those components this team would have never became the successful, fighting, dream team that we became.

As an extremely challenging and physically demanding pastime, it makes sense that a career in dance has lots of pressures that go along with it. This should come as no surprise seeing that every professional sport requires hard work and at least some sacrifice. It is questionable, however, if there is maybe too much pressure put on dancers in this day and age. Many people do not realize what it takes for a person to make it as a dancer, the dedication and drive the person must have. The fact of the matter is, the outcome of a dancer’s career may not outweigh the physical and emotional damages left over from the long journey to the top.
Belly dancing is thought to date back into the third millennium BCE in the Middle East, with evidence of solo improvised dance seen in Egyptian paintings, figurines, and tombs (Shay & Sellers-Young, 2005: 3). There are now several different versions of this dance in the Middle East, for example, the shikhat in Morocco, the ciftetelli in Turkey, and the raqs sharqi in Egypt (Shay & Sellers-Young, 2005: 2). While these dances are similar in movements, the dance’s meanings differ in each culture. Here in the United States, we adopted and renamed belly dance in the late 1890’s from the Middle East, but based our understandings of the dance off of mistaken notions we assumed to be true in those countries. The meanings of belly dance in the United States have been shaped by orientalist views, and therefore are misrepresentative of the true connotations. Several contradictions exist between what Americans see belly dance as and what is actually true in the Middle Eastern culture, such as the implications of the dance, the dress and context of the dance, who actually dances, and spiritual significance.
