Do you know how many animals die out on the streets each year because they are abandoned? Approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized around the world each year. This shows how bad abandoning your pets can be. People should go to jail when they abandon their pets, because a lot of pets die each year from being abandoned, and abandoned pets usually suffer in the streets before being taken in. If they even get taken in. Before being abandoned their owners will usually abuse them. “The animals we find are usually abused, starved, or dehydrated. This is becoming a bigger problem now.” Another quote that is heartbreaking, “He was about ten weeks old and weighed 20 pounds he was tied to a stake and used as bait for a Pit Bull. Afterward, he was thrown into a cage and left to bleed to death.”This textual evidence relates to reason #1 because these animals are being abused before being abandoned, and that is becoming a problem. This shows that these animals are almost dead by the time that these people find them, but some animals never get found, and that is truly heartbreaking. …show more content…
“Many animals that are deemed “unadoptable”- because they have suffered in the streets for so long, or have bad injuries.” Also, “Extended periods of neglect can lead to seriously compromised health or even death” This textual evidence relates to reason #2, because if animals are abandoned they are being neglected and that’s why animals can have seriously compromised health or even death. Also, when animals are “unadoptable” that’s because they have been on the streets for so long and they can’t take care of themselves alone, and when someone finds them they usually are injured or sick from being neglected and being alone on the streets. When animals suffer in the streets before being found is just terrible, but when you abuse them, put them in a cage with no water and just leave them to suffer is even

Sadly this happens to various animals each year that are brought to Kill Shelters. The ASPCA has stated that three to four million animals are euthanized in shelters in the United States. An absolutely shocking 60% of all animals that belong to shelters(McLellan). Many of these animals that are irrationally killed are completely worthy of adoption. The main reason for all these senseless killings is overpopulation.
Stay Animals suffer on the street, and only a small portion of them are rescued
The general public has a lack of understanding of animal hoarding. Many citizens do not realize that anyone can report abuse (Donaghey 2011). There are “…900 to 2,000 new cases [found] every year… with a quarter million animals falling victim” in the United States alone (Animal). If every hoarder has a neighbor on either side there are at least 4,000 witnesses to these crimes yearly. One reason for witnesses not reporting cases is the unknown fact that hoarded animals “range in species from cats and dogs to reptiles, rodents, birds, exotics and even farm animals” (Animal). Hoarded animals show signs of abuse which witnesses can detect such as heartworms, embedded collars, beaten, social issues, emaciated, or if they generally look unhealthy (Donaghey 2011).
Robert Gonzales is only one of many people to commit animal cruelty. Kevin Brunson was also accused of harming an animal. He starved his dog, Rambo, until he weighed only fifty-one pounds. A normal dog his size would weigh around one hundred and twenty-five pounds. Rambo was seventy-four pounds underweight. A dog named, Lacey had scabbing around the eyes and other injuries from being abused. “Lashawn Whitehead of Greensboro, admitted to police that she beat her dog for fifteen minutes, then set it on fire. The dog ran away, and she was found. Her injuries were burned ears, a broken jaw, and teeth. She was adopted into a new loving family.” (Cawthon 2) All animals are affected when it comes to animal abuse. Horses have been reported to be starved and in very poor living conditions. Owners don’t clean stalls, feed the animals, or take care of the horses grooming needs. The horses become depressed to due to the lack of care they receive. Sixteen horses were found at Gina Rapuano’s Farm, Apache, Willy, and Destiny are merely three of the horses greatly in need of care. Apache was starved so much you could see his ribs; he was infested with worms, and needed hoof and dental care. Willy had trouble walking, and horrible eye infections. Destiny had such bad dental care that he could not eat properly, and was starving. “The horses eyes were dull; they were not alert. They t...
“Certainly animals do not have the same abilities as humans. They can’t talk, write books, or drive cars, but neither can some humans. Do we say that humans who lack these abilities have no value and no rights? Certainly not…” (Animal Liberation 31)
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
Did you know, according to the “Pet Statistics” from ASPCA, there were about 5,000 animal shelters in the United States? In those shelters, about 5-7 million animals were rescued each year and approximately 3-4 million of them were euthanized. That was nearly half to the animal rescued. In other words, thousands of animals were euthanized daily. However, many of these euthanized animals were healthy, treatable, and adoptable pets. What caused these adoptable companions to be euthanized in animal shelters? The major cause was the overpopulation of animals without a home. Moreover, the irresponsible owners and breeders that did not sterilize their animals caused the overpopulation of animals.
These animals can come from places such as puppy mills, an establishment that breeds puppies for sale. Some dealers even go to the extent of baiting animals in from the streets with meat and sedatives, and others will pose as animal control officers. Flyers for “Lost pet” and “will give to good home” are responded by the wrong individuals. Some of these suffering animals were once pets that were loved and treated like family. To know that a family member is being treated unkindly and has to suffer for something they do not deserve is never desired (Peta).
Where there are hurt animals in cages, employees often simply just “blow it off”, like it was meant to happen, when, in reality, if the animals were taken care of from the beginning, the employees won’t be so used to seeing dead animals in cages throughout their day. A former Petco employee spoke to PETA, telling her terrifying stories about working for the company. She explained how it became a procedure at the end of the night to count and collect all the dead animals left throughout the day. She continued, explaining that there was so many fish dead by the end of the day that employees often had a hard time seeing if the fish were alive or dead, so they took as many fish they could, put them in a bag, and threw them away. One of the most horrific stories she remembers while being an employee at Petco was when she heard claustrophobic parakeets fighting in a cage.
Overpopulation of unwanted pets has become a major issue in the United States. According to Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society, there are 70 million stray cats and dogs in the United Stated. 6 to 8 million of those enter shelters each year. An estimated 3 to 4 million are euthanized in shelters
We love our pets-, they comfort us each and every day, whether we are feeling happy or sad. Everyday we feel, see, and hear the love coming from animals. There are also many stray animals that don't have a home. ¨Did you know that homeless animals outnumber homeless people 5 to 1¨. This means that for very five people there is an animal. That's why there are so many stray animals across the world. Scientists say that most of the stray animals we see are abandoned animals. Which is another term pet abandonment. Pet abandonment is a worldwide issue. Pet abandonment means basically someone leaving there animal with no one to take care of it. An animal is usually abandoned because someone can't take care of it/doesn't have anytime for it. Some people
Another common reason is that the owner finds the animal to be too much work, or if the owner moves to a new house in which he cannot bring the pet due to new rules. There are also other reasons a dog would be abandoned which are shocking. Some people abandon their pets because their owner has a baby, and doesn’t want the dog anymore! Sometimes they abandon dogs because the dog gets old. That is ESPECIALLY cruel because when a dog is old, that's when you should take care of it the most! Some people even abandon their dogs because of their own negligence! They don’t spay/neuter the dogs which leads to unwanted litters, so instead of taking the puppies to a shelter, they just dump them off in some random place, leaving them to die! Animal abandonment is also associated with animal abuse. According to http://www.animal-rights-action.com/pet-abandonment.html, greyhound racing is when they have a greyhound and they put them in races. This may sound harmless, but when you look below the surface, you can never see this cruel sport the same. When the greyhounds do not perform to their owner’s expectations, they are
Animal rights imply that animals have a right to their own life just as we do; that they are not ours to mess around with. To an extremist this argument also means we must maintain a vegetarian diet, not wearing leather or fur, and not keeping animals as pets. A moderate animal protection says that our responsibility toward animals is that we have a moral obligation not to cause them unnecessary pain.
Abandoned dogs, those animals left without supervision, reproduce, breed puppies that are also not wanted and are mistreated and neglected. In conclusion, I hope to have shed some new light on just what animal cruelty is and what it consists of. I hope that with this information, people will be more open to what they see. Hopefully this information will cut down on animal abuse and will make people watch out for mistreatment of animals. I hope that people will think twice before abusing animals.
