AIDS and the Catholic Church
As the AIDS epidemic in the United States advanced into the 1990s, it became clear that AIDS had a new target population. AIDS was no longer strictly a gay disease but was leaking into the general heterosexual population as well. Moreover, as the decade progressed, new cases of HIV infection were being increasingly identified in poor, minority communities. While the focus of the AIDS epidemic shifted from the high-profile male homosexual population to poor, minority communities, political activism and financial support for the fight against AIDS also began to decline. With the new limitations set by decreased public support and decreased financial resources, policy-makers, humanitarian organizations, and AIDS activists began to analyze how best to extend AIDS-related resources to these new target populations.
The US Hispanic community is one such population for which new methods of AIDS programming is being sought. Hispanics comprise a rapidly growing portion of the US minority population but are still over-represented among new cases of HIV infection. According to the CDC, "In 2000, Hispanics represented 13% of the US population (including residents of Puerto Rico), but accounted for 19% of the total number of new US AIDS cases reported that year (8,173 of 42,156 cases)" (CDC 1). In contrast to the gay male communities of San Francisco and New York in the 1980s, Hispanics are lacking the financial resources to combat the spread of AIDS in their communities. As a matter of fact, the Hispanic poverty rate of 20% given by the US Census Bureau is about three times that of caucasians. Thus, it is likely that support for combating the spread of AIDS within the Hispanic population must come from an outside third party.
Few institutions are in as ideal a position as the Catholic Church to address the AIDS epidemic in the US Hispanic community. A statistic from The Catholic Almanac says that 80% of US Hispanics are catholic, and hence the Catholic Church has a very influential presence in the Hispanic community. As a community-based institution with international backing, a catholic community church can draw on the resources of its arch-diocese to address community-specific issues. Therefore, an AIDS campaign disseminated through the catholic church would not necessarily rely on the financial support of those communities it benefits most -- namely poor, Hispanic communities. Such a campaign, the National Catholic AIDS Network, was established in 1989 as a resource for all catholic communities dealing with the struggle against AIDS.
This article dives deeper into the issue of black incarcerated women by going one step deeper and examining another dynamic of this issue, which is black incarcerated mothers specifically. I appreciate this article because it recognizes that this corrupt and unjust system is also the result of heteropatriarchy, that insists women be dependent on men, and punishes those who defy this standard. It is important to also recognize that traditional notions of family are invoked in these ideals and punishments, constructed by Eurocentric patriarchy. Although I will only briefly discuss how foster systems are connected with this issue because this is nevertheless an important dynamic to identify, I will mostly focus on the mothers themselves and how they are affected by the maintenance of black incarcerated
...ports Illustrated cover photo of a pit bull (Pit Bull Rescue Central, "Breed Information”). Dog fighting made a comeback during the 1980s and the pit bull became the favorite macho dog for dog fighters. The dogs were trained to kill or be killed. Pit bulls were also the preferred guard dog for gangs, thugs and criminals. Since the supporters and detractors of pit bulls hold such disparate opinions regarding the ferocity of the breeds, it is only hoped that further discussion and education will help resolve the sad fate that awaits these unfortunate animals. Simply placing all the blame on the breeds will not solve the problems of dog fighting, overbreeding, aggressive training, and excessive euthanizations. Lastly, the biased, sensationalistic publicity of horrific dog attacks which has destroyed the reputation of the once beloved All American Dog must cease.
They can be very large powerful breed that if taught or neglected can cause very serious damage. Pit Bulls are one of the most misunderstood dogs. They can look very aggressive when barking however be very tame and docile. This once used for fighting breed has gotten the label of the most dangerous breed label. While pit Bulls were once used to protect their children are now feared. There is a problem with dogs biting but it is not breed specific. Awareness about the breed will help save lives. Hundreds of Pit Bulls are put down every month. Pit Bulls have the highest euthanasia rate among dogs. Part of the problem is there are too many irresponsible owners that do not spay or neuter their Pit Bulls and then the puppies end up in shelters. Due to the misconception of Pit Bulls and the laws the puppies are immediately euthanized. The Pit Bull laws have shown that they are not effective in cutting down of the number of bites. This shows how it isn’t the breed but the owners that neglect and force Pit Bulls to be vicious. There are too many Pit Bulls being put down for no real reason. These dogs are misjudged for their ferocious reputation. Owners that have mistreated and abused Pit Bulls made them fight each other have done a disservice towards the breed. Laws that protect abused and neglected dogs need to be stricter and enforced so that powerful breeds don’t harm innocent people. Today’s society judges pit bulls on what they have read, seen on television and seen on the internet. Pit Bulls have the same instincts that any other breed has. Chasing squirrels, protecting or attacking when felt threatened, just like a Chihuahua would. Laws that required training of the dog and owners would be beneficial to all parties involved. There are still going to be the owners that do not follow the laws however they are the same owners that treat their pit bulls inhumanely. There has always been a breed that is most feared but this is
Easterling and Johnson. (2012). Understanding Unique Effects of Parental Incarceration on Children: Challenges, Progress, and Recommendations. Journal of Marriage and Family, 342-356.
Parental incarceration and its reoccurring effects on children, specifically in the system, is a rising issue with little research done and no current solution to halt the snowballing problem. According to Cynthia Seymour (1998), “current estimates indicate that as many as 1.5 million children have an incarcerated parent; many thousands of others have experienced the incarceration of a parent at some point in their lives”. A large portion of our country is effected by incarceration, especially children, yet nothing is being done to support these children and their families or caretakers.
Prior to 1978, local governments maintained a great deal of freedom in budgeting. The majority of revenue for local governments came from property taxes. They were able to set their own property tax rates based on revenue needs and meet the service demands of residents while avoiding budget deficits. However, the adoption of Proposition 13 in 1978 put a major constraint on property tax as a source of revenue. The impact was felt much more in counties than cities, as property tax made up around two-thirds of revenue (Cummins 2014, 233). Counties lost substantial control of their major fiscal resources to fund police and other law enforcement services, fire protection, parks, libraries, schools, hospitals and public health. California cities
Plus, pit bulls help the world in more ways than just being a man’s best friend. Many are not just family companions, but also search and rescue dogs, help kids become stronger readers, seizure watch dogs, diabetic alert dogs, comfort nursing home residents, and offer a plethora of services to human counterparts. ( Enos ). They not only do all these things, but they also make so many people smile so much. A dog can be the best thing to ever happen to you. No matter if a dog was your best friend, if it saved your life, or if it just makes your kids happy. But how are pit bulls supposed to do that if they’re
During the Age of Reformation people were greatly against the abuses that existed in the Roman Catholic Church. A couple of abuses that were greatly stressed were the selling of indulgences, simony, and nepotism. It was some of these same abuses that prompted German reformist Martin Luther to write his 95 Theses. And for the Council of Trent to later address them in a series of meetings.
There are many different social problem that causes stress in the family, such as, divorce, same sex marriage, and abuse/suicide. One such problem is incarcerated parents and the effects it has on children. In fact, as per the National Resource Center on Children and Families of the Incarcerated, at Rutgers University in Camden, no less than 2.7 million American kids and young people have no less than one parent in government or state jail (with all the more having parents and other relatives in nearby correctional facilities), and 33% of them will achieve age 18 while a parent is in the in prison (“Parents ' Incarceration”, n.d.). Offspring of incarcerated parents are effected negatively by their parent’s. They are forced to encounter hardships
In over a period of years, an increasing amount of attention has been shed to the problem of child sexual abuse in the church. While churches, and other facilities which care for children, have had their experience of this problem, most attention has been brought to the abuse in the Catholic Church. Around the world, case after case has been seen in the press of clergy and members of religious orders being charged with sex offenses against children. Some of these cases go back decades. The issue has certainly brought attention around the world. The reason why, is the question that ponders in everyone mind.
A study was done on children’s life events, behavior problems, social cognitions and maternal parenting, behaviors are examined regarding Children of mothers being released from incarceration. Although it may be clear that children affected by maternal incarceration are at increased risk compared with their peers, less is known about their relative risk compared with other at-risk children and how harmful effects can be prevented in this specific group. (Hissel, Bijleveld, and Kruttschnitt 2011). 30 participating mothers, including mothers who were not likely to regain parenthood and only comparing children’s behaviors with population norms. In comparing children of incarcerated mothers and children from the general population, the accumulation of risk factors other than maternal incarceration in children affected by maternal incarceration may complicate this comparison. large differences in low socio-economic status alone would already bias a comparison
Over the past few decades, an increase in incarceration has occurred. During the 1990’s, America’s prison population increased by half as well as the number of children with a parent in prison. By 2002, 1 in 45 minor children had a parent in prison. This continuous increase has a tremendous effect on families, especially when children are involved, due to prisoners being separated from their loved ones. Incarcerated parents are forced to learn a new way of life, such as not being a part of their children’s lives, while their children must learn to live with an absent parent and accept an alternated support system that may remove them from the only environment that they know. Additionally, research has shown how families who suffer from incarceration
A common stereotype of “pit bulls are vicious animals” used as an excuse for why parents will not allow their children to go over to a pit bull owning person’s house to play with other children. In recent times the pit bull has received a bad reputation from the media due to dog fighting cases and false stories. During both world wars the American Pit Bull Terrier was used for many military propaganda posters because of its powerful and loyal characteristics as well as held officer positions in the military. Many households, such as my own, find the breed to be the best pets for their families because Pit Bulls are very protective and loving dogs. Even though Pit bulls can have an aggressive behavior if not trained properly, I believe the American
According to Wakefield and Wildeman, paternal incarceration is associated with substantially elevated risks of child homelessness. Their 2014 study revealed that the link between incarceration and homelessness was due to the destabilization of already fragile household capital, and the decrease of children’s access to educational and informal supports. Moreover, in a recent study from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods PHDCN, it was revealed that children of incarcerated parents demonstrate 30% higher incidence of behavioral problems, such as social withdrawal, nervousness, irritability, and difficulty in concentrating. Furthermore, this population also experiences 44% more external behavioral problems, such as defiance, physical aggressiveness, and disruptiveness. Let alone, the rate of single mothers was matched with the increasing number of male prisoners, in accordance to Mauer (1999). In addition, the link between incarcerated maternal and paternal figures and child mortality is also identified, according to Wakefield and Wildeman (2014). Families with limited access to technologies and information, such as ones with incarcerated members, are likely to increase their infant mortality risk by 58%, as stated by the same authors. The book Children of the Prison Boom demonstrates mass incarceration is massively disruptive at the core of
As the practical influence was the more important of the two, the Catholic Church developed an extremely large practical role in the social services before it evolved. Today this order is being reversed. The church’s role as a service provider was deteriorating mainly because falling vocations left the church without suitable persons to sustain their roles. The reputation of the Catholic Church has also been stained by the found information of the shocking abuses committed by members of the Catholic Clergy on vulnerable people, particularly children, whom had been placed in their care. Despite the effects of these scandals, the new means of influencing social policy debate has a substantial effectiveness and may well offer a means by which the church can play an important role in the development of social policy in the future (Socialjustice.com. 2014).
