Starting this paper was quite challenging because I was uncertain about what to critique on. For my first take on paper two, I read a speech by Michelle Obama. In the beginning, I had a difficult time figuring out what to include in my paper since my paper was going to be mostly favorable. I had to read the speech many times to formulate critiques on certain examples and languages that the author used to support my claim. Therefore, whenever I reread the speech, I kept finding something new and became confused on whether to include it or not, because I was not completely sure if it would contradict with my claim. After annotating and making an outline for my paper, I began writing my draft. A few days later, I put together my paper and turned it in. Then I received feedback from Professor Boatner on how it seemed like I did not enjoy the speech, so I had to give another chance on a critique of a different article. …show more content…
After being anxious about giving it a second go on a critical analysis of an article due to the reasons that I had many things going on at school and at home, I listened to Mrs.
Boatner about reading “A Toxic Work World” by Anne-Marie Slaughter. When I first opened the article, I skimmed through the reading, then I read the article again and started annotating. After reading for the third time, I figured out the author’s claim and I began picking things I could included on my paper. After finding quotes, I could include in my paper, I made an outline of my paper. A few days later, I talked to Joe about my ideas, but had left my outline at home so I could not show him what I had. That night, I started writing my paper and the writing part took a little less than five hours because I had made a good outline with
quotes. When I received my paper back, I was hurt by the comment that said how I did not spend much time of my own writing this paper. It might have taken me less than five hours to write the final paper, but I worked on my paper for two to three hours for five days. Mrs. Boatner stated that my first example was weak with weak evidence and that I missed some major claims in the first few paragraphs. To fix that, I re read the article and incorporated the significant main claims. Another comment that Mrs. Boatner was that I did not give a summary and the background of the article and I addressed that by giving a brief summary of the article in the introduction. After looking back at the paper I was graded on and my final version of paper 2, I made many changes. I improved the paper by fixing my wording and I analyzed the quotes I included more. In addition, I made my paper more concise by getting rid of redundancy and choosing better words to articulate my paper. All in all, I spent a lot of time editing my paper 2 and feel that I improved my paper significantly.
In today’s society you either have to work hard to live a good life, or just inherit a lump sum of cash, which is probably never going to happen. So instead a person has to work a usual nine to five just to put food on the table for their families, and in many cases that is not even enough. In the article, “Why We Work” by Andrew Curry, Curry examines the complexities of work and touches on the reasons why many workers feel unsatisfied with their jobs. Barbara Ehrenreich writes an essay called, “Serving in Florida” which is about the overlooked life of being a server and the struggles of working off low minimum wages. Curry’s standpoint on jobs is that workers are not satisfied, the job takes control of their whole life, and workers spend
Today, women are not typically seen in higher levels of position in the work force than men. In Anne-Marie Slaughter’s article “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All”, she uses her own experience to convey why it is not possible for a woman to work in a higher position, due to women being more emotional than men. People still believe it’s a women’s place to stay at home to cook, clean and take care of the children, while the men go to work to pay the bills. And it’s considered odd if the man is a stay at home father and the woman is working 24/7 and is never home. Even though it is rewarding to be able to always be there to see your child’s milestones in their life. It is always nice to get away from that life for even a moment. I don’t mean going out with the girls or guys, while you hire a babysitter, but helping your husband or wife pay the bills, so you have two rather than one income coming in at the end of the month. In Richard Dorment’s article, “Why Men Still Can’t Have It All” he states that both men and women can’t have it all. I agree with both Slaughter and Dorment, but not entirely. I believe if you want to be a good
For this reader response I decided to read “World Gone Mad” by Derrick Jensen. This reading was about society and it’s sociopathic, and psychopathic tendencies. I agree with the author's point of view almost completely. In his writing he mentions how the government and the people who are in charge of society share a lot of the same traits of socio/psychopaths. He did this by siting in his work the definitions of the Sociopaths, and psychopaths with examples of them as a stereotypes and in the world of the government. For example, he starts off his work talking about how the “go green” commercials and movements make him upset because of how the world currently is, and how they have ways of “fixing it”. The way that they are fixing it though, is just like putting a rug over how we are destroying the world.
“Factory Girls” by Leslie T. Chang provides an inside look on migration in the inner cities of China. The book follows the lives of women who have left their home villages to work in factories. Primarily, Chang focuses on the lives of two women, Min and Chunming. Min left her village at the age of sixteen with her older sister to chuqu, or to go out, and see the world. She often changed jobs while in Dongguan because she is never satisfied with her position. Chang met Chunming at a dating agency where men and women could mingle with one another. Chunming began her career at a toy factory. In her diary, she often wrote out the goals she wanted to accomplish and how to accomplish them. She was very determined to become successful. Her persistence
In the essay “Work in an Industrial Society” by Erich Fromm, the author explains how work used to carry a profound satisfaction, however today workers only care about their payment for their labor. Fromm opens up with how craftsmanship was developed in the thirteenth and fourteenth century. It was not until the Middle ages, Renaissance and the eighteenth century, when craftsmanship was at its peak. According to C.W. Mills, workers were free to control his or her own working actions, learn from their work and develop their skills and capacities. Despite what Mills says, people today spend their best energy for seven to eight hours a day to produce “something”. Majority of the time, we do not see the final
Emile Durkheim is largely credited as the man who made Sociology a science. As a boy, he was enraptured by the scientific approach to society, but at that time, there was no social science curriculum. Vowing to change this, Durkheim worked scrupulously to earn his “degree in philosophy in 1882”. (Johnson 34) Unable to change the French school system right away, Emile traveled to Germany to further his education. It was there that he published his initial findings and gained the knowledge necessary to influence the French education system. Emile Durkheim is a distinguished and well versed man who, through his work, established a platform for other sociologist to build on.
Being a successful woman entrepreneur is an achievement women have been fighting for years to accomplish, a struggle most men won’t ever know. The book, “Lean In; Women, Work, and the Will to Lead” by Sheryl Sandberg is a novel discussing all her personal obstacles and her journey in becoming the 5th Most Powerful Woman in Forbes 2011. Not only being ranked number 5 on Forbes but becoming such a successful woman entirely in her career. I aspire to become a makeup artist, with my own salon created by my own rules. Even though my path of studies is completely different than that of Sandberg, I find myself connecting in so many ways with many aspects in this book.
Being able to write an exceptionally good paper is important to me in keeping my “A” for English class. There are so many resources available that can help in identifying and improving our weakest skill areas so we can write a properly structured paper. I was able to find many helpful resources that have helped to improve my skill areas in achieving unity in a paper, improving grammatical errors and expanding my vocabulary, and writing a rhetorical analysis,. Many of my resources come from the internet and some came from our textbook, “The Little Seagull.” These resources have been very beneficial to me and have helped me to better understand the mechanics of a well written paper.
In this essay, I attempted to combine two sources and analyze them each by itself first and then combine it at the end. I think I did a good job analyzing and interpreting what Ellen DeGeneres was saying in her article. This essay was more difficult than the other essays for me because it is hard to apply the examples and try to combine two different sources to make a compare and contrast paper make sense.

In 2000, Deborah Ellis the author, knowing the conflict of one other country and what was happening wrote the book The Breadwinner.Which is about the when the Taliban came and took over Afghanistan, and in the development making sure that women had no rights and men had tons of rights. The message Linda Pastan portrays in the poem Ethics is the idea that one can only fully grasp ethics and morals once they mature and have developed experiences in their life. Ethics and morals can only be present once one has gained experienced and developed maturity. The author uses imagery, diction and figures of speech to prove this point. In this poem, a teacher asks her students, if there was a fire and they only had the choice to save a Rembrandt painting or an old woman, which would they save?
As I look back through this paper, I am not certain I have met the requirements of this writing assignment. I feel as though I am still trying the reach that next bar on the monkey bars as I did when I was young. No matter how much I struggle and lunge for the next rung, it is just barely out of my reach. But in all actuality, is that what I'm really trying to accomplish? Is just reaching the next rung my main objective? No, reaching the end of the monkey bars is my goal. As for right now, I would be happy just reaching that next rung. As my first paper in approximately two years, I hope it is not too terribly bad. As the quarter progresses, I hope to improve in this writing style that is all too new and foreign to me.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
David Lodge is one of the representative writers of the postmodernism period. Apart from the theme of the meaning of work, both from the industrial and academic point of view, the “Nice Work” novel also develops the idea of feminism. The earnest feminist in the novel is Robyn Penrose, the main character of the novel, who works as university teacher. Throughout the novel, she reveals her feminist beliefs from the manner in which she behaves and talks.
