In the first short story of Drown by Junot Diaz, the reader follows a nine year old and his twelve year old brother, Rafa, as they stay with their uncle in Ocoa for the summer. Throughout their brief journey to unmask Ysreal, who wears a mask to hide his disfigured face caused by a pig when he was a baby, there is a very evident portrayal of the brothers’ family dynamic. Through their relationship, the reader is able to get an understanding of how machismo, their environment, and how their absent father play a role in their life.
“The Swimmer,” a short fiction by John Cheever, presents a theme to the reader about the unavoidable changes of life. The story focuses on the round character by the name of Neddy Merrill who is in extreme denial about the reality of his life. He has lost his youth, wealth, and family yet only at the end of the story does he develop the most by experiencing a glimpse of realization on all that he has indeed lost. In the short story “The Swimmer,” John Cheever uses point of view, setting and symbolism to show the value of true relationships and the moments of life that are taken for granted.
As Edna develops as a character in the story and becomes a stronger woman, her swimming abilities and love of water also grow. As she begins to swim more, she
In a crucial scene in Jaws, chief Martin Brody must use his mistake as guide for to him complete his goal of saving the town from the antagonistic shark. After catching a tiger shark, the local town fishermen all celebrate their victory together with Brody and the mayor believing they have solved Amity Island’s problem. Soon the mother of the deceased child who was killed by the great shark appears on the boardwalk. Her costume, a solid black dress appropriate for a funeral, contrasts with the bright sunny day on the beach that is represented with high-key lighting. The dress also symbolizes the mother’s multiple feelings of mourning for her child and her anger towards Brody, which again juxtaposes the feelings of success among Brody and the fishermen. Her conversation with the police chief is executed through a shot-reverse shot sequence but she catches Brody’s attention with a smack to his face. She goes on how Brod...

During the summer of Edna's awakening, the sea's influence increases as she learns how to swim, an event which holds much more significance that her fellow vacationers realize. “To her friends, she has accomplished a simple feat; to Edna, she has accomplished a miracle” (Showalter 114). She has found a peace and tranquility in swimming which gives her the feeling of freedom. The narrator tells us that as she swims, "she seem[s] to be reaching out for the unlimited in which to lose herself" (Chopin 74). She sees the freedom t...
In chapter three, Edward “Shark” Wicks is the father of the most beautiful girl in town; he is extremely protective over his daughter, so much so that she cannot even speak to Jimmie Munroe. Jimmie happens to kiss Sharks daughter, Alice, despite her father’s warnings, which in turn results in the family’s downfall. The Munroe family, Jimmie in specific, unknowingly ruined Sharks reputation as the richest man in town. Jimmie Munroe was the dramatic foil character which resulted in Shark’s reputation being ruined. Had Jimmie Munroe not been around Shark would have never went on a rampage against Jimmie and in turn would not have had to expose his fraud. He could continue living his life as a lie and continue deceiving people into believing he was rich.
After many interviews with Bethany’s family and reviewing her autobiography, the film began to come together for Sean. The setting is Kauai, Hawaii, where the film replays what happened to Hamilton that day. It was early one Halloween morning when Bethany went for a morning surf. As she glided against the water, a tiger shark appeared and attacked her, tearing her arm out of its socket. That day she unfortunately lost over half the blood in her body, but she did not allow this misfortune to stop her. Indeed her steps towards recovery were phenomenal. One may suggest that Bethany truly has salt water flowing through her veins. How else can one explain the passion that ignites her to surf? Even the detachment of her arm could not separate her from the waves. Throughout the film, she demonstrated how we should never give up on our dreams.
Laura takes her husband and neighbor out on a sailboat one stormy evening to execute her plan of escape. She "falls" off the boat and swims to shore. After packing a small bag with some personal items and money, Laura Burns abandons her abusive husband and leaves her miserable life behind. Thus begins Laura Burns' new life as Sara Waters. She changes her name, location, situation, and is reborn.
The book ends with the shark just inches from devouring Brody when all the injuries its endured finally take their toll, the shark stops moving and sinks to the bottom ocean never to be seen again. Whereas, in the films climatic scenes Brody shoves one of Hooper’s air tanks into the shark’s mouth as it is attempting to eat him. He takes Quint's rifle and shoots at the air tank causing it to explode, obliterating the shark. Moments later, Hooper rises from the depths startling Brody, who almost shoots him. And together, they paddle their way ashore on a piece of the wreckage from the
