For about a year and a half, President Lincoln told the North to focus on saving the union and not worry about abolishing slavery. But somehow, the war for the Union managed to turn into a war for African American freedom. The Confederates depended heavily on slavery during. Slaves were used to build, carry material, tend to horses and perform camp chores. Slavery secured the Confederacy like it did in the Old South. Both Union military commanders and politicians began to realize in order to defeat the Confederacy; the North would have to destroy slavery down south. One of the spies was a well-known figure and heroine in African American history named Harriet Tubman. Not only was she a spy, she was a nurse and cook for the Union. She made sure the army was taken care as far as physically. Tubman’s involvement in the Army was very significant. She was very familiar with land and knew the way to navigate for the Army. Whether the government and Lincoln wanted to admit it or not, African American men and women were eager to join the army mainly to push for their freedom. Even though some blacks were free, they were still treated harshly as if they were still slaves. They were beaten and forced to do labor for their white counterparts. Eventually, the dream of the black troops and black people in general came true when, in January 1865, the 13th Amendment passed. This was extremely special and significant to African Americans because the amendment abolished slavery in America, they were finally free.
