A Students’ Involvement Encourages Good Grades
The Purpose of this Report
The purpose of this report is to illustrate that teens that are involved in extra-curricular activities generally get higher grades than those who are not involved in activities. Some of the research for this report was acquired through the Internet and some of it was obtained through surveys of 120 high school students, grades ten through twelve (see Appendix A). All of the sources that talked about this subject suggested that there is a strong positive correlation between extra-curricular activities and good grades. Although some students are different, this has proven true in the general classroom as well as in a high school talented and gifted class, a high school English class, and a high school art class. The main reason that this correlation exists is because of organization skills, parents’ involvement, and the need these students have to excel.
Results in the General Classroom
It used to be believed by experts that one should study and not play. This is no longer the case, according to Mr. R. Griffin in his article Helping Athletes Excel in Sports and School (23). He suggests that it is important to encourage both academic and extra-curricular performance. In most instances, involvement in extra-curricular activities leads to better grades. According to the University of Michigan, teens that are involved in activities during high school are more likely than teens that didn’t participate in any organized activities to have higher grades as high school seniors and to still be in college six years later (Swanbrow 1). These results were produced at the University of Michigan by tracking 1,259 sophomores for six years. These results also proved to be true in the three individual classrooms that were surveyed. The classes that were surveyed were students in art, talented and gifted, and English at Southeast Polk high school. The results are shown in the following three paragraphs.
High School Talented and Gifted Class
A group of students, grades ten through twelve, in the Talented and Gifted program were surveyed to see if the positive correlation between involvement and grades held true. According to this particular survey, it was shown that ninety-six percent of students were involved in extra-curricular activities. These activities ranged from basketball, wrestling, football, swimming and track to National Honors Society, Bible study, speech, drama, and student council. Out of the ninety-six percent of people involved in activities, the average grade point was 3.

Rhetoric about morality, freedom and responsibility now resonated in new ways with increasing numbers of white middle-class Americans who were concerned with social changes and the threat to their privileges. Oliver Brown, father of Linda Brown decided that his third grade daughter should not have to walk one mile through a railroad switchyard just to get to the bus stop before she could even get to the separate Negro school for her area. He attempted to enroll her in the white public school only three blocks from their home, but her enrollment was denied due to her race. The browns believed this was a violation of their rights, and took their case to the courts. This wasn’t the first time that blacks found their constitutional rights violated. After the civil war, laws were passed to continue the separation of blacks and whites throughout the southern states, starting with the Jim Crow laws which officially segregated the whites from the black. It wasn’t until 1896 in Plessy vs. Ferguson that black people even began to see equality as an option. Nothing changed in the world until 1954 when the historical ruling of Brown vs. The Board of Education that anything changed. Until then, all stores, restaurants, schools and public places were deemed ‘separate but equal’ through the Plessy vs. Ferguson ruling in 1896. Many cases just like the Brown vs. Board of Education were taken to the Supreme Court together in a class action suite. The world changed when nine justices made the decision to deem segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
Based on their evidence, the focus on athletics contributes to lower dropout rates and higher test scores; however, they do note that students participating in athletics are obligated to be extremely focused and dedicated. It is no secret that achieving in athletics and academics is challenging and demanding. Additionally, communities achieving success in the athletic field have a greater social capital. Social capital is “the norms, the social networks, and the relationships” that individuals have within one another (Bowen and Hitt). Social capital is pertinent for children growing up to be prosperous adults. These relationships help build academic success. Likewise, most schools have equal success in athletics and academics. When Governor Reagan announced his candidacy for President, he made a jab at President Carter by stating, “A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his.” If one could bestow a phrase upon the Carter administration, they might say, “where is all went wrong.” President Carter was elected to president in 1976 and his victory was largely attributed to his opponent’s large unpopularity with the American electorate. Although President Ford was unpopular with the American electorate, Carter still barely won by a significantly slim margin. The failures of the Carter administration played a large rule in the ascendancy of the conservative movement. At the conclusion of President Carter’s presidency, the economy was in shambles with astronomical interest rates, the American Embassy in Iran was raided and American hostages were taken, and a pro family movement was also on the rise. The conservative ascendancy was largely attributed to the political and economic failures of the Carter Administration and a cultural movement that pushed for conservative values.
Firstly, GATTACA depicts our society where many individuals are discriminated against due to their genetic makeup. In the movie, Vincent was denied employment at GATTCA because he had a 99% chance of heart defect and most likely to die at the age of 30 and so he was considered “UNVAILD” for employment due to natural birth (Niccol, 1997). Likewise, several bills have been introduced in the Ontario Legislature such as the private members bill C-536 to modify the Canadian Labour Code to help eliminate genetic discrimination in workplaces (Heim-Myers, 2011). The need and the emergence to present the private Members’ bill to protect people illustrates the inequality in workplaces today in this society towards individuals based on their genetic makeup. In addition, Michio Kaku discusses in “Vision of the future” that in U.S, individuals have been struggling for 12 years to eliminate genetic discrimination and the division created between individuals due to alterations and genetic engineering. Individuals who are unable to afford these alterations and modifications will be at the bottom the social ladder and get discriminated upon while people with the genetic enhancement will be higher up the social hierarchy. (Kaku, 2007). Hence, through Vincent’s character GATTACA portrays our society in which individuals are genetically discriminated against due to their DNA.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life

As a student, I am an active participant in my academic and extracurricular activities. My first priority has always been to make good grades and learn in school. Although this is important to me, I also know that by participating in clubs, sports, and after school activities, I will become a well-rounded student. During the past years of my high school career I have participated and received awards in the following: Cheerleading (eight years), twice as captain, '97 -'98 Varsity Letter in Cheerleading, '98 AIM scholar, Who's Who Among American Cheerleaders, and '98 Academic Excellence Award while participating in Virginia High School League Interscholastic Activities. I also belonged to the following clubs: S.A.D.D. club (two years), second year as secretary, Pep Club, Varsity Club, Choir Club, and Computer Club. In the year '99 -'00 I received awards in the following classes: Computer Applications, Spanish I, World Geography, and Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry. I also received an award for Most Encouraging Student. I currently belong to the Hiking and Outdoor Club, Ski Club, Pep Club, and Environmental Awareness Club. In addition, this year I participate in a program called Read With A Friend. In this program I, along with a group of other students, go to the near by elementary school to read to a class of students from kindergarten to fifth grade.

According to a statistical report published by the National Center For Education Statistics, which is a governmental source that collects, analyzes, and reports information on the educational conditions in America, the average participation in activities of low socioeconomic seniors in a public school is 73.85% while the average participation of high socioeconomic seniors is 87.2% (National Center For Education Statistics, 1995, p. 2). The participation of high socioeconomic status students in extracurricular activities is significantly higher than the participation of low socioeconomic status students. The statistical report also established a distinction between the effects of the availability of extracurricular activities showing that minority status, size, or location of school don’t limit it, but instead, the income level of individual students is the main driving factor to the meagerness of participation. Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
Teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved. Teens posting activities they are involved in such as clubs, sports, competitions, or FFA that are positive. Being involved in extracurricular activities can have a very positive impact with a teen’s grades and so...
Imagine walking across the stage in just a few years from now. Having thousands of eyes pointed at you as you take that emotional walk to finally receive your high school diploma. After a few years when you have graduated high school and started life, you're going to look back and think, what have I accomplished so far? Extracurricular activities can be very beneficial for students now, and those in the future as well. They can allow you to feel like you have accomplished something while in school. Extracurricular activities are important because they can benefit a student through personal, educational, and even social means. It is a great idea to get more students involved in extracurricular activities and parents should begin to give their kids a little push to get them more involved.
