A Soldier’ Sacrifice
Art can be conveyed with a clear point or deeper meaning that is not as obvious. Likewise, one does not always feel the same emotion concerning a piece. Usually, there will be various inputs on the piece. In this piece, I noticed a bigger picture rather than, just looking at the obvious. A Soldier’s Sacrifice, shows two obvious points of symbolism, but in contrast one was a bit more understated. Altogether, I found this piece to be very symbolic, of the soldier’s family dynamic, his current environment, and an even greater sacrifice.
First, one element that makes this picture symbolic is the soldier’s family dynamic. This soldier could be the parent of one child or five. Eventually, he or she will more than likely miss
a milestone, such as first steps, first words, first day of kindergarten, or a graduation. Possibly, there is a sick parent that the soldier does not get to be there to care for. Phone calls and pictures to loved ones, will undoubtedly be their way of life for a while. There is a look a soldier has on his face when he loads the bus and leaves his family. Instantly, he forces a smile while he waves at his loved ones. However, his emotions inside are already making him miss home and long for the day in the park. The second factor that makes this picture symbolic is the soldier’s current outdoor surroundings. From time to time, one has heard of soldier’s living conditions while deployed. For example, their wind contains large amounts of sand, dry extreme temperature, or they can experience frigid temperatures. Unfortunately, they do not have the green grass, lush shade trees, an air-conditioned house or heater. The soldier does not get to choose the region or the length of time he will remain there. One can understand why living in those conditions would make you miss and appreciate the amenities and environment of home. Notably, the third detail that makes this piece symbolic is the picture as a whole. This is not just a dad playing in the outdoors with his son. Soldiers have to contemplate the “what ifs” that coincide with the military. Frequently, they cannot help but think if they leave this child could grow up without them, or their spouse could became a widow or widower. Devastating situations like this did affect our family, sadly we lost a close family member while he was serving in Afghanistan. He had recently gotten married and was ready to start a family. Likewise to his marriage, he committed his life to the Navy Seals. Ultimately, he knew the realities of what could happen. Never the less, it was a choice and sacrifice he had to examine and make. In conclusion, there is more that goes into the soldier’s mindset beyond what one sees. Prior to my husband’s deployment he expressed a few of these possibilities. At the present time, I did not realize all he on his mind. On TV we see the happy joyous reuniting of soldiers and families, but the emotions prior to them leaving is overwhelming. Is this soldier smiling while contemplating the “what ifs” before he leaves or thankful to be back enjoying his family again? That is something we don’t know, but unfortunately it could be his reality. Given these points, look at the bigger picture in A Soldier’s Sacrifice. All things considered it will show the symbolism of interacting with his family dynamics and the environment he gets to enjoy, but also the realities that they may have to process..

I felt an instant connection with it, as O’ Sullivan must have felt standing there upon the sea of bodies. The composition of this photo tells a story all on its own. From the way he captured the body laying twisted in the front, capturing the expressions on his face, to the way the soldiers on the horses blend into the background. The photo speaks death, not because we can see death but because of the composition, the way film captured “fog” or “dust clouds” to the color of the capture itself. In Tim O'Brien's story "The Things They Carried" we see how O'Brien uses symbolism in order to indirectly give us a message and help us to connect to what the soldiers are thinking and feeling. During a war soldiers tend to take with them items from home kind of as a security blanket. The items they normally take with them tend to reveal certain characteristics of their personality.
Furthermore, painted are weeping women surrounded by deceased girls holding lifeless infants behind the military figure. A smog or gas seems to engulf them along with dead children. Even more, a third painting shows children from all over the world giving weapons to a German boy who is molding them into an uncertain object, showing there is no longer a need for weapons in a New World. In addition, the military man is dead with 2 doves above him, signifying such peace that has been brought. The final image is of a man in the middle, signifying Jesus.

In juxtaposition behind his left shoulder is a field of red containing a pattern of gold and silver. His cover is stark white, precisely in the middle a gold eagle globe and anchor symbol. Determined blue eyes gaze back at me. His mouth set with resolve. His uniform, deep blue trimmed in red. Gold buttons run down the center. The leather neck fastened tight with two gold eagle globe and anchors on either side of the closure. A United States Marine stares back at me and I weep because some general, some officer one day may consider my son to be an acceptable loss.
In Hemingway’s short story “Soldier’s Home”, Hemingway introduces us to a young American soldier, that had just arrived home from World War I. Harold Krebs, our main character, did not receive a warm welcome after his arrival, due to coming home a few years later than most soldiers. After arriving home, it becomes clear that World War I has deeply impacted the young man, Krebs is not the same man that headed off to the war. O’Brien uses potent metaphors with a third person narrator to shape each character. In doing so, the reader is able to sympathize with the internal and external struggles the men endure. These symbolic comparisons often give even the smallest details great literary weight, due to their dual meanings. The symbolism in “The Things They Carried” guides the reader through the complex development of characters by establishing their humanity during the inhumane circumstance of war, articulating what the men need for emotional and spiritual survival, and by revealing the character’s psychological burdens.

Sassoon shows many examples of how the soldier in this poem gets pulled back into war-like terrors by meaningless things. The soldier is simply sitting in his home yet gets flashbacks of war and it haunts him. A simple definition of sacrifice is to give up something for the sake of something else, whether it is for another human life, for an idea, or even for a belief. “She was 17 years old. He stood glaring at her, his weapon before her face. ‘Do you believe in God?’ She paused. It was a life-or-death question. ‘Yes, I believe in God.’ ‘Why?’ asked her executioner. But he never gave her the chance to respond.
