The snow fell from the sky, as if each individual snowflake had its own free will and thoughts. The frozen water drops covered the overcoats of various citizens in Germany. It wasn’t necessarily a cold day, but various citizens rushed from one street to another. Doors opened and closed with force and determination. Everyone was hurrying to get their Christmas shopping done. It was a good idea to do it that day, on the 18th of December, seeing as the popular toys or records were flying off the shelves. Money changed hands as quickly as the snow fell, but even with all the rush, there was still at least some kindness and generosity shown between the rushed citizens. But among all the rush and general panic, there was one man simply taking a stroll, enjoying the afternoon snowfall. He had a very kind face, his brown eyes darting back and forth. He saw more bags and boxes than he did people, but regardless, he still greeted each face his eyes had the fortune of falling upon. His hair was a sandy blonde, and it was very orderly and slicked back. It was the hair of a distinct business man. He knew what he was doing. He could convince a communist to buy a politician in the American government system, or persuade women to follow him back to his apartment just with a single nod. He was an influential man, not only in looks, but also in his country. He was born and raised in Germany. He held pride in his strong country. He was even happier to see that it was no longer at a state of war. As of three months prior to December 18th, Germany had officially signed a treaty with the Allied forces, even though the ceasefire had been in effect since earlier that year, and a general peace had been standing for a few years. The off... ... middle of paper ... ...it was true. “It’s... It’s overwhelming, isn’t it?” “Yeah... Can you still hear them?” Empress asked. “Yes... Of course I can...” “Can you hear the singing?” Chad was caught off guard. “Singing?” “Yes, singing. As in, the singing of the national anthem?” “When? Where? Right now? No, I don’t hear anything. I don’t hear anything at all, why? Where is it? Are they outside? Is it carolers?” Empress laughed again. She punched Chad’s chest softly. “It was during a battle at the end of the war. The unofficial end, that is. It was the Battle for Greater London. The Nazis still had power over that area. It was an all out fire fight. There was so much destruction we had to resort to Guerrilla warfare. You were there, weren’t you?” Chad remembered the battle. “Of course I was, darling,” he said calmly. “I ended the war at the Battle for Greater London.”
Furthermore, the Rhineland was to be permanently disarmed and occupied by the Allies for fifteen years to ensure that there would be no attacks against France that might start another war. In addition to this, it was stated that Germany would never be allowed to unite with Austria because they would form an incredibly strong fighting force. This resulted in much complaining by the Germans on the account that they believed they were being left without a military force significant enough to protect themselves. Also, the treaty did not require any of the other countries to perform even the slightest demilitarization.
In the passage be ginning “They had picked…” from the novel Snow Falling On Cedars, the author, David Guterson, uses many techniques to give the passage a depressing, and frightening mood. He uses vivid imagery to describe Carl’s dead body. He also uses figurative language, such as metaphors and similes to show the severity of the situation. Finally, his diction shows the reader how reading about a crime scene can seem real if the word choice is right. All the techniques Guterson use help the reader to feel as if they were actually at the scene when Carl’s dead body was found in the ocean.
Joyce’s intentions of the snow will forever be open to interpretation, however it is reasonably evident that his intentions of the snow provide the reader with a symbol used to depict the unification and vulnerability of humanity. It is the snow that first showcases Gabriel’s dominant and superficial personality, and reciprocates itself as it serves as reasoning for the epiphany that illuminated his flawed humility.
The mercenary laughed. “I told you before Reinhardt. Such outdated virtues have no place in this world anymore. The only thing that matters is to get the job done, no matter the cost.”
Charles dickens classic novella “A Christmas Carol” endorses the notion that “Generosity involves more than the giving of money, it’s also about the giving of one's goodwill, compassion, sympathy, empathy and kindness. By taking his seemingly irredeemable protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge on a supernatural journey, Dickens’ intends to convey to all of society the importance of generosity. He proclaims that generosity of the spirit defines Christmas, and goes a large way towards defining true humanity for him as well.
Soon after the war had ended, the allies began to draw up peace treaties with Italy and four other countries that had fought with the Axis. Throughout the history of the world there have been major power shifts, wars, and abrupt changes in society. World War II, being as destructive as it was, was bound to happen. But, through all the death, destruction, surprise attacks, and torn cities, peace was accomplished at a great cost.
On November 11th, 1918, the Germans finally ended World War I by signing an armistice after many casualties. At the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, the “Big Four” met to deliberate and decide what the peace terms would be for the defeated Central Powers. The peace treaty produced for Germany was the Treaty of Versailles, which Germany had no choice but to sign even though the punishment was harsh and deserved. The Treaty of Versailles took away German conquered land, large part of its army, and stated that Germany had to compensate the Allied Powers for the damages they caused.
With the armistice that took effect November 11,1918, the Great War had come to an end, four long years after it had begun. The German military machine had lost the war, and with it, hopes of German dominance in European affairs. Utterly defeated, the new German government (the Kaiser had abdicated at the end of the war) had no choice but to comply with the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, despite the fact that Germany was allowed no say in the terms of the treaty. As a result of this treaty, Germany was stripped of all her colonial possessions as well as valuable continental territories, most importantly, Alsace-Lorraine, the Saar, and the Polish Corridor. Her armed forces were restricted to 100,000 men, and restricted from occupying the Rhineland. Furthermore, Germany was held responsible for the war and therefore had to pay reparations for all d...
There is a point in everyone’s life where they wonder if something they are facing will ever end. March 4th, 1966, is the day that would begin the most profitable week ever for snow clearing businesses in the city of Winnipeg. Our city’s nickname as Winterpeg, Manisnowba was eternally cemented in the span of twenty hours. On that day, Winnipeg endured one of it’s most colossal snowstorms in it’s history. The snow stranded a large amount of people, stores turned into shelters, and it seemed like the snow would fall forever. The storm effectively shut the entire city down. Barbara Kaufman, my maternal grandmother, and Sybil Lerner, my paternal grandmother lived through this storm, and have recalled some of their memories. Both were mothers of
The “war to end all wars,” came to an end when the Treaty of Versailles was signed by Germany and the Allied Powers. It was a peace agreement between the countries of the Allied Powers and ended Germany’s in...
An armistice was finally signed on November 11, 1918 and Allied nations didn’t hesitate to swing the arm of justice into motion for Germany. By January 1919, hundreds of Allied leaders and their staff assembled in Paris, forming committees to which every aspect of the war would be overlooked. The mass gathering of worldwide leadership entered the history books as the Paris Peace Conference, from which, the Treaty of Versailles was created. These meeting were unusual in nature; being the first for such vast and numerous collections of world leaders gathered to discuss and with hopes, produce a treaty that would prevent forthcoming war, along with addressing the pressing and long standing future economic ...
I stepped out of the chilly November air and into the warmth of my home. The first snowfall of the year had hit early in the morning, and the soft, powdery snow provided entertainment for hours. As I laid my furry mittens and warm hat on the bench to dry, I was immediately greeted with the rich scent of sweet apple pie, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and the twenty-pound turkey my mother was preparing for our Thanksgiving feast.
“That’s none of your concern Cassander, you should not be thinking of war at your age!” Belle replied in a serious tone.
“Ring, click.” You heard that right, that was the sound of sadness. That alarm means only one thing it is Monday! The first day of the week which means I have five days of school sigh, but wait what is that outside? I can barely see, but I can tell it’s white outside, wait what is that? It's snowing! “We are going to have a snow day!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs as I ran through my house!
The snow that was predicted to be several inches by the end of the weekend quickly piled up to around eight inches by that evening. At times, the snow was falling so heavily you could hardly see the streetlights that glistened like beacons in a sea of snow. With the landscape draped in white, the trees hangi...
