Journal 1 In William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily”, readers are introduced to Emily Grierson whose character was highly respected in her society but for some mysterious reason fell off the grid. The other people in her community became curious as to what was going on in her life and any effort to find out the truth had proved to be futile. This journal seeks to show the narrator’s view of the Miss Emily’s story, as the narrator would refer to her due to the first person plural point of view the story was written in. Consequently, the sense in telling the story should be noted, as denoted by the title and why he would constantly use “we instead of “I”. The narrator tells the story as a means of informing the reader about the greatness of Miss Emily to the community.
In the beginning of the story, the narrator referred to her as a “fallen monument” and states that the deceased Emily Grierson was to be buried together with the “Union and Confederate soldiers who fell at the battle of Jefferson”(Faulkner 99). This gives the story a united description of Emily’s character and shows how well she was respected in her community even after her demise. In addition, the narrator continues by showing the mystery the deceased woman had created when she disappeared from the light of society. “From that time on her front door remained closed, save for a period of six or seven years…” (Faulkner 103).When a rose that is in the center of attention disappears, everyone who’s seen it becomes curious about its disappearance. This was the exact same case with Ms. Emily. The people of the town were saddened as none of them knew the correct information on the deceased
woman. The narrator narrates the entire story using a first person plural point of view by using words such as “we” instead “I” as a mean to portray the thoughts of the rest of the community. . “That was two years after her father's death and a short time after her sweetheart—the one we believed would marry her—had deserted her.”(Faulkner 100). This quote signifies that the community had been speculating that something was going on between the deceased woman and a man she was dating after the death of her father (Anderson). It also gives a frightening and scary tone by the narrator. The use of the word “we” instead of “I”, helps to show that the narrator is hiding his own character and any association with the deceased woman. This leads readers to believe that the narrator knew more information than he was providing and possibly could have been the gossiper in the society. Ms. Emily is unknown to the people of her town and rumors are the only way that they can come up with a descriptive figure of what she really was. She used to be a teacher before, but now she had turned to a smelly woman whose house was a gross stench to the rest of her neighbors. “"Dammit, sir," Judge Stevens said, "will you accuse a lady to her face of smelling bad?"”(Faulkner 101). In a nutshell, it is clear that the narrator has information on the deceased woman that he would not like to share, which he hides well by the use of the first person plural.

In William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” the main character named Emily is a women of high status and is the gossip of the town. Emily was thirty and remained unmarried. Soon she found a Northern man named Homer Baron and was spending most of her time with him until the town didn’t see him after he stepped foot into the house of Emily. In “ A Rose for Emily”, William Faulkner tells the complex tale of a woman who is battered by time and unable to move through life after the loss of each significant male figure in her life. Unlike Disney Stories, there is no prince charming to rescue fallen princess, and her assumed misery becomes the subject of everyone in the town of Jefferson, Mississippi. As the townspeople gossip about her and develop various scenarios to account for her behaviors and the unknown details of her life, Emily Grierson serves as a scapegoat for the lower classes to validate their lives. In telling this story, Faulkner decides to take an unusual approach; he utilizes a narrator to convey the details of a first-person tale, by examining chronology, the role of the narrator and the interpretations of “A Rose for Emily”, it can be seen that this story is impossible to tell without a narrator.
In “A Rose for Emily”, by William Faulkner, Emily Geierson is a woman that faces many difficulties throughout her lifetime. Emily Geierson was once a cheerful and bright lady who turned mysterious and dark through a serious of tragic events. The lost of the two men, whom she loved, left Emily devastated and in denial. Faulkner used these difficulties to define Emily’s fascinating character that is revealed throughout the short story. William Faulkner uses characterization in “A Rose for Emily”, to illustrate Miss Emily as a stubborn, overly attached, and introverted woman.
The theme of "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner is that people should let go of the past, moving on with the present so that they can prepare to welcome their future. Emily was the proof of a person who always lived on the shadow of the past; she clung into it and was afraid of changing. The first evident that shows to the readers right on the description of Grierson's house "it was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street." The society was changing every minutes but still, Emily's house was still remained like a symbol of seventieth century. The second evident show in the first flashback of the story, the event that Miss Emily declined to pay taxes. In her mind, her family was a powerful family and they didn't have to pay any taxes in the town of Jefferson. She even didn't believe the sheriff in front of her is the "real" sheriff, so that she talked to him as talk to the Colonel who has died for almost ten years "See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson." Third evident was the fact that Miss Emily had kept her father's death body inside the house and didn't allow burying him. She has lived under his control for so long, now all of sudden he left her, she was left all by herself, she felt lost and alone, so that she wants to keep him with her in order to think he's still living with her and continued controlling her life. The fourth evident and also the most interesting of this story, the discovery of Homer Barron's skeleton in the secret room. The arrangement inside the room showing obviously that Miss Emily has slept with the death body day by day, until all remained later was just a skeleton, she's still sleeping with it, clutching on it every night. The action of killing Homer Barron can be understood that Miss Emily was afraid that he would leave her, afraid of letting him go, so she decided to kill him, so that she doesn't have to afraid of losing him, of changing, Homer Barron would still stay with her forever.

Through the use of setting, characterization and theme Faulkner was able to create quite a mysterious and memorable story. "A Rose for Emily" is more than just a story though; her death represents the passing of a more genteel way of life. That is much more saddening than the unforgettable scene of Homer's decaying body. The loss of respect and politeness is has a much greater impact on society than a construction worker who by trade is always trying to change things. Generation after generation Miss Emily happily escaped modernism by locking herself in her house the past.
