EXPLORE THE CONTRAST BETWEEN WINDY CORNER AND MRS VYSE’S ‘WELL APPOINTED FLAT.’ HOW DOES OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THESE ENVIRONMENTS PREPARE US FOR THE CONFLICT IN THE NOVEL.
The first comparison to be drawn between the two environs is of their names. This is the first piece of information the reader is given, and is therefore of significance, as they have different connotations. “Windy Corner” has links to nature and the weather due to the word ‘windy.’ It implies change and movement-which is definitely applicable to that household. The ‘Corner’ suggests a sheltered resting-place, which is quite appropriate because the household does seem somewhat removed or protected from society. This is in stark contrast to Mrs Vyse’s flat. The fact that she has ownership of it, rather than Cecil, suggests that this is her dominion, and as a result is the dominant one in their relationship. The word ‘flat’ sounds cold, empty and static, as opposed to the vibrancy of Windy Corner. Forster’s comment that it is ‘well-appointed,’ is another of his satirical observations, and this leads us to believe that perhaps it does not have such high standards after all.
The physical interiors are just as different as their appointed names. Mrs Vyse’s flat is not described in too much detail, but just enough so that the reader has a clear picture of it in our minds. As mentioned above, the flat is proved not to have such high standards when Mrs Honeychurch reveals that there is a “thick layer of flue under the beds.” It is not a very pleasant place, as we see when “darkness enveloped the flat.” By contrast, there is so much light at Windy Corner that the curtains “had been pulled to meet” in order to protect the furniture. Light is associated with goodness, truth and honesty, and it is quite significant that this is missing from Mrs Vyse’s flat. Both homes have a piano, but the purpose for it appears to be quite different. In the flat, Lucy plays both Schumann and Beethoven, whereas at Windy Corner, it is lucky to stay in one piece, “you needn’t kick the piano!” (pg 104) The piano is not taken as seriously at Windy Corner, which is another indication of their easy-going attitude.
The different environments also help us to find out about the characters of Lucy and Cecil. When they are introduced to their partner’s homes, the reader gets fresh a insight into their characters.
The suburban house, as the film’s setting and sphere of action, is extraordinary partly because it is ‘next-door’ to an airport. The odd layout of this backyard is underlined because their suburb meets the kind of architectural cast-offs often found at the margins of big cities. Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights share similarities in many aspects, perhaps most plainly seen in the plots: just as Clarissa marries Richard rather than Peter Walsh in order to secure a comfortable life for herself, Catherine chooses Edgar Linton over Heathcliff in an attempt to wrest both herself and Heathcliff from the squalid lifestyle of Wuthering Heights. However, these two novels also overlap in thematic elements in that both are concerned with the opposing forces of civilization or order and chaos or madness. The recurring image of the house is an important symbol used to illustrate both authors’ order versus chaos themes. The setting used throughout the novel Wuthering Heights, helps to set the mood to describe the characters. We find two households separated by the cold, muddy, and barren moors, one by the name of Wuthering Heights, and the other Thrushcross Grange. Each house stands alone, in the mist of the dreary land, and the atmosphere creates a mood of isolation. These two places, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange differ greatly in appearance and mood. These differences reflect the universal conflict between storm and calm that Emily Bronte develops as the theme.
Under the orders of her husband, the narrator is moved to a house far from society in the country, where she is locked into an upstairs room. This environment serves not as an inspiration for mental health, but as an element of repression. The locked door and barred windows serve to physically restrain her: “the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls.” The narrator is affected not only by the physical restraints but also by being exposed to the room’s yellow wallpaper which is dreadful and fosters only negative creativity. “It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study, and when you follow the lame uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide – plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions.”
There is a similar treatment of space in the two works, with the larger, upstairs rooms at the summer lodging and at Thornfield Hall being associated with insanity and the smaller rooms below being safer and saner. Gilman's narrator expresses an early desire to move downstairs to a smaller, saner room, but her wish is ignored. Large rooms become haunted rooms in both stories as typified by the room with the yellow wallpaper, the Red Room, and the third floor room beyond which Bertha is confined.

The clouded mystery behind a novel’s meaning often makes the work more enjoyable to read. In Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights, there is a mysterious aura which defines every aspect of the story. When understanding the story, the reader cannot look at Weathering Heights simply as a home, but as a necessary and unshakable part of life for the main characters. Critics argue many different theories regarding Weathering Heights and what its central theme is supposed to be interpreted as. Although the critics hold different interpretations of the novel, they all agree on the simple fact that deceit and deception both hold key roles within the story. This is not solely seen in characters like Heathcliff, but also in Emily Bronte herself in the way she presents the story. By neglecting to provide the reader with adequate explanations and conclusions of vital events in the story, the author deceives the reader into thinking that they can interpret the situations in their own way. Although it may seem that certain details are left out on purpose for the reader to fill in themselves, this is simply not the case. This is highlighted by J. Hillis Miller when he states: “This act of interpretation always leaves something over, something just at the edge of the circle of theoretical vision which that vision does not encompass. This something left out is clearly a significant detail” (369). By deceiving the average reader with these scenarios, Emily Bronte mirrors some of her own characters. The similarity between the author’s interaction with her readers and the deceptive interactions between characters are crucial attributes to the novel’s brilliance.
