Money is a life-changing experience for many, whether good or bad. Unfortunately for Walter, a character in A Raisin in the Sun, opening a business was also risky. He was going to do things illegally for it to happen. His mother, Lena, received a check for $10,000! This was a large amount of money in the 1950s, but Walter wanted all of the money for himself. Throughout the play, the symbol of money builds to represent not just conflicts but eventually happiness, suggesting that money is both good and bad. Mama Lena is very uncertain about how she will use the money to please her family. At the novel's beginning, before Mama gets her check, everybody is eager to see that check. Especially for her children, she wants Beneatha to become a doctor and pursue it. After Mama received the check, Walter came home and asked if it had come, but he was vulgar to Mama and Ruth. After Mama yells at Walter for yelling at Ruth and being obsessed with money, she says, “So now it is life; money is life. Once upon a time, freedom used to be life – now it is money. I guess the world does change” (Hansberry 75). Mama is very upset about how Walter has changed. He only now cares about money. Not only is he losing himself, he is losing the people he loves. Throughout the play, money has emotionally impacted the whole family. Towards the end of the play, Walter finds shocking news. Walter's friend, Bobo, came up with the upsetting news and told Walter, “I did not go to Springfield yesterday” (Hansberry 127). At this point in the play, Walter loses $6,000 to Willy, who was supposed to use that money for Beneatha's school and his business.
