In A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift he uses political satire and irony to portray his true message to the people of Ireland. He talks about how poor children are a burden on their parents, and how the parents are a burden on the country. He talks about how the mother and children are begging on the streets, and when the kids become a bit older the begin to steal. Even with the children stealing they are not good enough at it to support their families. Jonathan Swift proposes that they start to eat the babies at a year old. When his real message is that the landlords need to care about the people they are taking so much away from and they need to start investing in their own country instead of importing so many goods.

to become useful to not only their families but there country. By eating the babies it will prevent women from killing the children (causing miscarriages), and will make the men love their wives more because she will be bring food and money to the family. He suggest eating them at a year old because the babies will be nourished and fat from from breast feeding from the mother at this point, and the family would be able to make back the money earned to support the child up until this age. Once the babies no longer depend on their mother for food they start to lose their fat because the families they are coming from do not have the money to feed them; which Jonathan even brings up by saying once they are pre-teens they are no longer good to eat because they are already starving. The babies would be more useful than just being eaten as well. They could make clothing for rich, which would be considered unnecessary clothing for the poor; such as gloves and summer boots. In paragraph 29 is were he list the “unreasonable” ways to help out the poor. Which truly are the real reasons he wrote this essay. The paragraph overall says that the rich need to start caring more about the poor and their country as a whole instead of being so selfish and taking all the food and money for themselves. The Irish landlords make the poor people give them all there food as payment, which means the poor end up not having enough food left to eat or sell to support their family. Instead of making the essay serious and being straightforward about the problems going on, Jonathan uses satire to explain the situation. He recommends a completely ridiculous solution to the problem. From just reading the title in the book “A Modest Proposal”, I was thinking it was a story about romance and how a gentleman proposed marriage to his female lover. His proposal, in effect, is to fatten up these undernourished children and feed them to Ireland's rich land-owners.
