A twelve year old's life was turned upside down. This little boy named Ishmael Beah was running around with all his friends. Then suddenly people started coming into his village sad and scared. Ishmael Beah and his friends started running from the rebels that were at war with the government. He ends up getting caught and killing a lot of people. At the end of the story they go to rehabilitation center to put then back into the community. Never loose hope, people can change, everything bad comes to an end. Ishmael Beah uses imagery to teach us that we should never give up and try our best to the last moment to have hope, and to teach us to have strength in bad times and bad things make us stronger. This is about a boy soldier forced into the line of duty to protect his life and make it without dyeing. The lesson of resilience that Ishmael Beah is trying to teach us, is that you should never lose hope and always stay strong. …show more content…
The boys had to say together so they could survive and not get caught by the rebel force. Also people in the villages thought they were a part of the rebel force and would hid from them. They would fight over getting caught and not being able to get food. He shows resiliences in this by not fighting them also but acting mature and trying to keep everyone from getting
Through the boy's’ actions the author shows us the necessity of leadership, for example “Turning their own heads, looking at each other, each expecting the other to do something” (Heynen 1). If they had thought about it, or one boy had stood up and done something then the rest would know what to do and follow along. Further along in the story one of the boys has the idea to use his coat “rounding the back of it over them [pheasants] like a shell” (Heynen 1), then the rest of them did the exact same. A theme in this story could be, sometimes helping the helpless is worth the
The book “Milkweed” by Jerry Spinelli tells a story about a boy who survived the horrible days of World War 2. He struggles every single day to find his identity and what is happening in the world. The book “Milkweed” itself shows many signs of survival. Both literally, and figuratively. This novel describes what the Jews did to survive and how they survived. The theme of survival is represented by different objects. The author, Spinelli, uses many literary elements to describe and support the theme of survival. The main three are: setting (where and what time), symbols such as the plant Milkweed that represents a new hope, and conflicts (what is the fight/fighting in the story).
Hope enables people to move on by providing the thought that maybe tomorrow’s events will be better than today’s. Hope is a theme that remains constant in every part of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. Ishmael begins the novel optimistic, believing he will find his family again. This optimism is later lost when Ishmael is recruited by the army to fight against the rebels, causing him to become addicted to drugs and the thrill of killing. Three years after his recruitment, Ishmael is rescued by UNICEF-a group dedicated to rehabilitating child soldiers. During his rehabilitation, Ishmael discovers hope once more by relearning how to trust, love, and have the will to survive. The presence of hope throughout A Long Way Gone enables Ishmael to have an ability to move on and a will to survive that he lacks when he loses hope.
In the quote above, Ishmael is saying that the culture of the Takers is not so much lazy in its execution of civilization, but it is actually at war with the world. I agree with this statement because in the human culture, everything becomes competition to the point where extermination is the solution. Quinn writes, “Diversity is exactly what’s under attack here. Everyday dozens of species disappear as a direct result of the way the Takers compete outside the law” (Quinn 130). Due to mankind’s lust for competition, takers have abused the peacekeeping law which has inevitably decreased the amount of diversity among the community of life. This then causes a world where everyone is for themselves which then leads to an economically fragile society. Moreover, the author uses a
...es your life and everyone around you. No matter what anyone says, you are a lot different after your life (or another’s) has been placed in the hands of others. The boys not only matured a lot, but leadership roles emerged. It became obvious that Gordie was a leader in the group less than halfway through. And as groups tend to do, they relied on his leadership more and more until the end. The group was faced with the additional challenge of dealing with difficult group members. But the group discovered the concept of synergy when they found if they stuck together and used teamwork, they are a lot stronger unified than individually.
Throughout the life of an individual most people would agree that dealing with tough conflict is an important part in growing as a person. In “The Cellist of Sarajevo” all the characters experience a brutal war that makes each of them struggle albeit in different ways. Each of them have their own anxieties and rage that eventually makes them grow as characters at the end of the book. Steven Galloway’s novel “The Cellist of Sarajevo” exemplifies that when an individual goes through a difficult circumstance they will often struggle because of the anger and fear they have manifested over time. The conflict that the individual faces will force them to reinforce and strengthen their identity in order to survive.
“A Wall of Fire Rising,” by Edwidge Danticat is a story of dreamers. In this story are three characters, Lili, Little guy, and guy. This small family lives in a run-down town where work is hard to come by, leading to their poor life style. Lili is a hard worker, always doing what it takes to make sure there is food on the table. Her only hope is that her son will have a better life than the one they are currently living. Little Guy is like many young children; he loves his mother and father and is oblivious to his family’s circumstances. He is a hard worker and wants to succeed in school. Guy, a father who is struggling to create a life for his family, is also trying to find a meaning for his life. After a series of events in the story, Guy comes to the decision to commit suicide. Following his death are the reactions from his family, and ultimately, the end of the story. In “A Wall of Fire Rising,” we learn that man’s ability to dream, often takes an important role in their realities. We see this demonstrated by the thoughts, and actions of Lili, Little Guy, and Guy.
A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah is a memoir of a young, emotionally distraught child soldier who takes his audience through his mental and physical journey to his eventual escape of the Civil War in Sierra Leone. For the past few days, our World Literature class have been trying to figure out/argue what category A Long Way Gone falls under. In Tim O'Brien's book, The Things They Carried, he distinguishes between two types of stories: (1) stories that need to be real and (2) stories that rely on the emotional truth. To me, A Long Way Gone is a novel that relies on the emotional truth and should be read as such; it relies on the emotions of human beings for the story to be understood as it was written by a boy like one of us. Initially I was not sure what the emotional truth was, so I googled the definition and got that, “an emotional truth is writing in such a way that readers not only learn the facts of an event, but can feel the joy, sorrow, anger, envy, love, hate, poignancy that the participant feels.” And I believe that a story that relies on the emotional truth is not any less significant than stories that strictly state the truth. A story told using emotional truth/validity is a story that, in my opinion, offers more of the real picture than that of a story that doesn’t tug on the emotions of a reader and just blatantly state the true happenings of an event.
Luke Benward once said “If you don’t stand up to your fears, have bravery, loyalty, and you don’t have friends, you’ll never win.” In the novel “Shatter Me” Tahereh Mafi wrote a story about a girl named Juliette. Since Juliette was little everyone she touched something bad happens to them. Her parents were scared of her, so they sent her away. Now she has been locked up for 264 days. In the novel “Shatter Me” Tahereh Mafi uses some obstacles such as trusting others, trusting themselves, and overcoming the fear of their supernatural power to demonstrate the theme of there are times for people to stand up for themselves.
Contents INTRODUCTION 2 CHRONOLIGICAL ARRANGEMENT OF EVENTS THAT LEAD TO CONFLICTS 3 CONCLUSION 5 INTRODUCTION An attention-grabbing story of a youngster’s voyage from beginning to end. In “A LONG WAY GONE,” Ishmael Beah, at present twenty six years old, tells a fascinating story he has always kept from everyone. When he was twelve years of age, he escaped attacking the revolutionaries and roamed a land rendered distorted by violence. By thirteen, he’d been chosen by the government, military and Ishmael Beah.
Aristotle, Confucius, and many more embody the spirit of learning. They understood the positive impact education has on individuals. They understood how education enhances the mind and helps the development of a broad perspective of the world. They understood the necessity of education in moving society forward. They understood that education needs cherishing and protecting. Unfortunately, not everyone understands. The current people in power in Sierra Leone do not understand. After the civil war, foreigners and corruption took over a vast majority of the country and the livelihood of the people got pushed out. The current state of education looks bleak, and no has a guaranteed solution. In Ishmael Beah’s book two men named Benjamin and Bockarie
In the “Araby” by James Joyce, there is a small boy who is crushed multiple times, every chance he gets he gets pushed back down, his face back into the dirt. With all of his faults it is proved that he learned at least one lesson, that he can only trust himself if he wants something done. Clearly, you can see the greatness of this story, and how it expresses life lessons as well as a boy being beaten back with one step forward and two steps back.
He didn’t let his tribe members stop him, he didn’t let twenty-two miles stop him, he didn’t let his dead family member stop him, and poverty didn’t stop him either. He was very strong, stronger than before facing challenges in his life and for someone who had reach rock-bottom or a community who will forever be in the bottom, he was able to achieve his goal. His efforts, willpower and determination were able to complete his effort. He had also made a strong impact on his community by proving that he was able to accomplish what others can’t. Junior prove that, in life, resolution, determination and effort for something better can’t be stop and people with that mind set are getting what they want even suffering from poverty. This book is about strength, hope and courage and through Arnold spirt, we see our self and the commitment we as human beings put into to overcome our numerous obstacles that impede us. Sacrifices, challenges and struggle are often the risk we must take in order to be successful and it is a high price to pay and may be painful but it is a price that is worth
In the story we can see two main and few secondary characters. The two main characters are an American soldier, at the same time the narrator, and the major. The secondary characters are the boys, similar in age as narrator, and the doctor. Throughout interaction and conversation between characters, and through good selection of setting, author successfully passes the message and the theme of the story to readers. In my opinion the major theme of the story is loss and different ways of confronting it. At the same time loss is one of the things that all characters in the story share, it is something that connects them, makes them similar, and keeps them coming to the hospital every afternoon. Another theme that comes out in the story is the discrimination that the American soldier faced.
This message of this story really is a pick me up sorta story or motivations. This can help me when i get knocked down and don't feel like getting back up. I like this story a lot because of that. And also everyone needs motivation and a push every once in awhile and this story
