African state of Sierra Leone, but he was not touched by the war until 1993. Ishmael and his brother along with some friend decided to walk to Mattru Jong for a talent show where they were going to dance. They had worn many layers of clothing for fashion , but in the end it ultimately helps them in the end. Sadly for these boys they were never going to return home. There first stop was there grandmas village (Kabati) where Ishmael and company ate and talked with his grandma.
She wanted them to stay the night but they decided to continue on. They arrived only a couple of hours later meeting with friends, catching up on life, then later going to Bo Road were they would eat food. The next afternoon was when they first heard about the rebels attacking. Some of Ishmael's friends had come home early from school warning everyone that there was an attack and that the village they were at was probably the next target. They waited for a while then decided that it would be best if they left to go back to their families and see what they could spread the word. So, they set off on a canoe and waved their friends goodbye. Sadly for them they will not be seen …show more content…
again. As They reached the other side of the shore they saw people in panic. They got off and started back to their village. “ We started walking, and a woman carrying her flip flops on her head spoke without looking at us: “Too much blood has been spilled where you are going. Even the good spirits have fled from that place.” (Beah 12) Therefore, you can see now that their village has most likely been attacked. Before anything else a van came speeding past and stopping, a man came out crying like a child, then he opened one of the doors and a woman fell out dead. In the back of the van three more more dead but, these were children. “The last casualty that we saw that evening was a woman who carried her baby on her back. Blood was running down her dress and dripping behind her, making a trail. Her child had been shot dead as she ran for her life. Luckily for her, the bullet didn't go through the baby’s body.”(Beah 13) Already these boys had gone through so much pain and suffering seeing things that no one should ever see young or old.
They had been subjected to the horrors of war and careless villance that often don’t lead to resolution just pain and terror. Though so much has already happened much much more happens. After the main horrors the boys go on the run trying to find new villages to rest in and food to eat. They also actively try to search for their family. Saldy after another attack ishmael gets separated from his brother, leaving him to survive along in the woods for quite some time, nearly coming close to seeing his family again before the village that they were supposedly in was attacked by rebels. Ishmael is left to think that his whole family is dead. He never will see them again in life because of the
war. One of the most disappointing things is that the rebels aren't the only monsters in this war. Ishmael and some new friends are captured and brainwashed by the government to kill mercilessly. They make Isham addicted to cocaine, marijuana, and a drug called “brown brown” which gives the boy soldiers the courage to fight. The boys are forced to kill and are told that for every rebel ead it is vengeance for their family. Ishmael is then given to the UNICEF for rehabilitation were he meets others like him and an amazing nurse named Esther and learns how to forgive himself and others. After a while he seems to have been healed to level were he can now go home to some extended family in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to live with his uncle and others. Sadly though the war comes again killing his uncle and Ishmael is again forced to escape. He eventually escapes to Guinea and ends his journey in New York. He thought that New York was gonna be this crazy place but it ended up being completely fine. In conclusion, war is a dark time in everyone’s history when put through it. For children making them into boy soldiers can destroy the mind causing it to think only about avenging the deaths of those whom you once loved but are now dead and gone. We should actively try and stop these government who force these kids into war and also giving them hard drugs because once given to rehabilitation areas they have a hard time figuring things out. Ishmael is a lesson to all and an inspiration on never giving up and hoping for the best in problems and through hard work you can do anything even escape from war and pain.

Ishmael Beah’s memoir, A Long Way Gone, narrates the story of Ishmael’s life as a child soldier in the Sierra Leonean civil war. Ishmael chronicles his journey from a scared, adrift child who lost his family in the war to a brutal child soldier who mercilessly killed many individuals to a guilt stricken rehabilitated teen who slowly learns to overcome his remorse from his past actions. Ishmael’s life as a child soldier first started when the Sierra Leonean army took him and his friends with them to the village, Yele, occupied by army officials and seemingly safe from the rebels. Unfortunately, within a few weeks of their stay, the rebels attacked Yele, and Ishmael and his friends decided to make the choice of becoming a child soldier in order to sustain their slim chances of staying alive. Ishmael’s interaction with violence was very different as a child soldier compared to as a civilian: while he witnessed violent actions before, as a child soldier he was committing them. As his life as a soldier demanded more violence from him, Ishmael sank deeper into the process of dehumanization with his main driving point being the revenge that he sought from the rebels for the deaths of his family and friends. After a few months as a child soldier, Ishmael was brought to the Benin home by UNICEF officials who hoped to rehabilitate the completely dehumanized child soldiers. With the help of Esther, a compassionate nurse, and other staff members in the center, Ishmael was able to ultimately reverse the effects of the war on him. By forgiving himself and the rebels who took away his close ones from him, Ishmael was able to restore his emotion of empathy and become rehabilitated.
... it is all laid out in chapter form, each chapter from a different of the three protagonists perspective. The start from their gives background information on how these people lived in that time, it tells from everyday life to details of getting there father mauled by a lion (no, seriously… ouch, right?) Then it goes on and tells the story of the unfairness and the bombings… finally it comes to the bulk of the story, the travelling. This is at this point, the three boys have been split up already, they make their journey through many places along quite a long time, they go across the Nile River, to Ethiopia, back way down the map to Kenya and finally, together again, they end up in the Kakuma Refugee Camp. This isn't the end however, this book has a sort of Epilogue that explains what happens next, how they get the America, and that is what finishes it off. The End.

In his memoir, A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah deals with his loss of innocence as he is forced to join the children army of Sierra Leone in the country's civil war after being conscripted to the army that once destroyed his town in order for Ishmael to survive. His memoir acts as a voice to show the many difficulties that the members of Sierra Leone's child army had to suffer through and their day to day struggle to survive in the worst of conditions. In order to escape the perils and trials of war, Ishmael loses his innocence as he transitions from a child who liked to rap with his friends to a cold blooded solider in the army during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Through his transition, Ishmael is forced to resort to the addiction of drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, and “brown-brown” just so that he, along with the other members of the child army can have the courage to be able to kill their fellow countrymen and slaughter entire towns who stand in their paths. In order to portray his struggles in the army, Ishmael uses the dramatic elements of memories explained using flashback, dialogue, and first-person narration in order to establish the theme of the memoir being how war causes for a child to lose its innocence. The transition shown in the memoir illustrates how the title of the novel, A Long Way Gone, was chosen because it demonstrates how he is a long way gone psychologically, emotionally, and physically, from the child that he was when the memoir begins to the soldier that he is forced to become.
