Good memories-we bury them in the chest of our hearts, locked in so tight, to never be forgotten. Yet, the harder we hold on, the more they seem to slip away. So we document these memories in some way, whether by a photograph, journal entry, or poem. But, the wretched hardships are twisted in with the beautiful moments in life. No one wants to remember the awful memories, but we record them any how. They give us perspective. It’s through life’s trials we grow the most; it’s through living and revisiting our worst moments that we can reflect how wonderful life truly is. The fun of having family reunions, meeting up with people you care about, and having a great time. Celebration when each family member would show up, or come home from a long trip. Going to church, having another thing to bond about, and when people return from trips being able to “Listen to gospel music outside at the church homecoming”(Nikki Giovanni). The great memories seem to never last, they just fade away till there's nothing left. Boyhood is a cinematic time lapse over the span of 12 years documenting a boy named Mason, from the years 6 to 18 going through the struggles and triumphs of childhood and adulthood. The purpose of the movie is to illustrate how Mason travels through young adulthood and his experiences to show how it shapes him as a person. The independent movie gained much praise from audiences and critics alike. It cannot be argued, however, that it is like no other coming of age movie.
Another rather consistent observation I saw was the indication that most children used their parent as a secure base. A secure base is provided through a relationship that harbors one or more responsive caregivers who meets the child’s needs and to whom the child can turn to as a safe haven, when upset or distraught. This relationship can be seen in many of the observations I made. The one that stands out the most and that clearly depicts how a child uses a secure base is Susy. Susy used her parents as secure base when she was frightened by the boy that was older than her and whom she didn’t know. She ran to her parents for protection and comfort from the stranger. This semester in Child Development has helped me a great deal. I came into this class wanting to be a Child Development teacher at the high school level. I am leaving this class with the same ambition to become a Child Development teacher. I have learned so much by taking this class and I know it will all be helpful in the future once I am standing at the front of a classroom. Also, just by watching the way Mary teaches the class, I have learned things that I want to take into my own style of teaching.
Lots of observations were collected whilst the children were making their maps and working together to find the word treasure, so I have highlighted just a few to address the overall understandings of the findings.
To start with an overview of social constructionism in very general terms leads to build understandings of child and childhood in a social world more explicitly. Notion of social construction is defined in diverse disciplines and instead of generating a description there are a number of thoughts. “It is sometimes called a movement, at other times a position, a theory, a theoretical orientation, an approach; psychologists remain unsure of its status (Stam 2001, p. 294)”. Vivien (1995, p. 10) points the origin of social constructionism stems from two to three hundred years ago in the period of enlightenment, modernism and postmodernism. By all means, Berger and Luckmann’ (1966) book The Social Construction of Reality as a first book have a title of “social construction” has influential contributes in recent studies (Hacking, 1999). In this book, questioning everyday life realities and giving examples from it, shows the importance of social relations and language that we used. Hacking’ The Social Construction of What? While all societies acknowledge that children are different from adults, how they are different, changes, both generationally and across cultures. “The essence of childhood studies is that childhood is a social and cultural phenomenon” (James, 1998). Evident that there are in fact multiple childhoods, a unifying theme of childhood studies is that childhood is a social construction and aims to explore the major implications on future outcomes and adulthood. Recognizing childhood as a social construction guides exploration through themes to a better understanding of multiple childhoods, particularly differences influencing individual perception and experience of childhood. Childhood is socially constructed according to parenting style by parents’ ability to create a secure parent-child relationship, embrace love in attitudes towards the child through acceptance in a prepared environment, fostering healthy development which results in evidence based, major impacts on the experience of childhood as well as for the child’s resiliency and ability to overcome any adversity in the environment to reach positive future outcomes and succeed.
According to Girlhood Interrupted, the author conducted a study of collected data from authorities that broadened the view on poverty and inequality among black and white girls between the age of 5-19. The adult perception regarded that young black girls are less innocent compared to white girls at a parallel age, indicating that the color of a child’s skin may affect how their actions are perceived. In the study, it was depicted that black girls are less nurturing and comforting, knowledgeable on adult topics, and more independent as opposed to white girls. The “adultification” is misjudging and stereotypical, especially for adolescents as one would assume extensive roles that are powered for adulthood.

Middle childhood is the time where children start to fully develop their skills. They develop their comprehension skills, communication skills, and many more. In order to get a better look into the life of children during this stage, I decided to observe my niece’s friend, Ryan, who is almost at the end of her middle childhood stage. Ryan is an eleven year old girl who attends Bassett Elementary. I choose to observe Ryan because, she is a very unique girl who does not always fit into what the average girl her age is like.
Childhood play is an important part of every child’s development. This behavior starts in infancy, they begin to explore their world through play. Play behavior serves as an indicator of the child’s cognitive and social development. Research on play and development is essential to helping caregivers understand the importance of childhood play. What is an ordinary childhood? I think it means being able to live a life full of imagination and wonder, without having to deal with real-world problems. My childhood was anything but ordinary. I lived in multiple cities growing up; however, Ardmore is where I primarily lived during the first 10 years of my life. The majority of this city is a lower-class society.
