A Heated Debate On The Polar Vortex
Since the beginning of 2014, meteorologists have been using a new vocabulary word to describe the phenomenon of extreme cold temperatures North America has been experiencing, named the “Polar Vortex”. It is called a vortex because of the strong winds that are present in the upper atmospheres in the polar regions of the earth. When the vortices at the poles become weaker, they start to move towards the equator, unleashing arctic storms at latitudes that are typically warm.

Early this February the states surrounding the great lakes in the northeast were pounded by lake-effect snow storms. Some areas saw more than four feet of snow. These states are accustomed to lake-effect snow storms, but it has been some time since they last saw one of this magnitude. Some areas saw up to 140 inches in less than twelve days. While model grid spacing’s were becoming less sporadic going form 15-20 to 38 grid points over the great lakes, the model resolution was still not sufficient enough to pick up on this type of event. Forecasters wanted a high resolution mesoscale model but the model is only as good as the data that is incorporated into it. There needed to be vastly improved data and they “called for a high resolution (temporal and spatial) observational network that included automatic weather stations able to report surface temperature, pressure, and precipitation in real time; wind profilers able to estimate wind speed and direction at various levels; and a new Doppler radar system that could locate snow bands 100 kilometers away.”
First, global warming has an immense impact on Arctic Sovereignty as the rise of greenhouse gases thrive in Canada along with other countries. Within 20 years, the polar ice caps of the Arctic have melted twice as fast compared to before. The loss of Arctic ice can furthermore pose a threat to shipping, as navigating the Arctic becomes increasingly challenging. Finally, climate change threatens the extinction of numerous animal species, namely the polar bear. Hence, global warming poses a major challenge to Arctic Sovereignty and Canada along with other members in the Arctic Council must prevent it.
The swiftness, beauty, and absolute daunting sight of tornadoes have haunted minds and pulled at the curiosity of many. As Mother Nature’s fiercest windstorms, tornadoes do not simply lift you up and transport you to the magical Land of Oz. There are only a couple of people on record that claim to have been in and seen the center of a tornado and lived. The negative side of global warming is that it leads to melting of ice. The world's glaciers, especially Arctic glaciers are melting faster than new snow and ice can supplement them.
