Today in society new things are being created every second. The question is how does humanity keep up with the continual rate of new technology? Dave Barry in his article A GPS Helps a Guy Always know Where His Couch is, discusses the desire for men to have the latest “gadgets” that are released. Also Barry's article compares the desire to have technology between men and women. Barry’s article will allow me to reflect on modern society today in terms of technology being accurately compared to the way he describes it in his article.
In the article Barry points out that men have a greater attraction for technology than women. This argument could be taken in multiple directions, but in terms of Barry's article he chooses men. Barry states “ For example as a guy I feel I need a new computer every time a new model comes out”(316). Compared to his wife who is still content with her computer that he claims she had since the “Civil War”. The Global Positioning System also known as GPS is a specific device that Barry utilizes in his article to compare the level of desire men have of technology over women. In the article Barry stated that his wife “argues that it's easier to just ask for directions”(316), rather than use a GPS. Does this scenario accurately represent a response men or women would have in today's society ? Douglas Karr in his article How Women and Men Use Social Media and Mobile Differently, provided a statistical difference that thirteen percent of men over eleven percent of women use a GPS today.
