A Good Essay is More than Just Five Paragraphs
This year in College Writing one has been very interesting. I understand now that there is a lot more that goes into writing a paper than I first thought. I especially realize this when I look back at one of my first papers which was the descriptive essay titled, "The Hidden Truth."
The first thing that pops into my mind when I look at this paper is my consideration of the kind of audience I had. I was assuming they were very or somewhat knowledgeable about the topic I chose. I realize this is not true now. This is the process that goes on in my mind when I first meet people. I think, for the audience I had, the main idea needed to be more concrete. As I went on in this class the kind of topics I chose got more & more concrete & audience consideration grew stronger in forming my papers.
The second thing that I can determine about how my writing has changed since this first paper is my narrowing of focus. I've realized this is key to writing a good paper. In "The Hidden Truth," my writing jumps from one thing to the next and a lot of it is not tied back to the main idea. Yes, this was a descriptive essay but my descriptions seem to over ride my main focus. My papers have been getting more convincing since I've realized how important this is.
Another important aspect of writing is order. I understand now that the same information in a paper arranged differently can make or break a paper. In my paper I just observed the people & figured the most logical order was chronological, starting with the youngest person & going to the oldest. I feel now that if I would have started with the oldest woman, it might have drawn my audience in more & seen what I was talking about early on instead of waiting until the end, after I've already lost their interest
Word usage is also very important to papers. This is especially true in descriptive essays. I've learned how different words give us different feelings even if they have the same meaning.
In an excerpt of Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay," Marie Foley reveals how the Five-Paragraph Essay formula contradicts writing instructor's most basic goals. Foley shows that the formula deters from generating individual thinking. In today's society, essays are used by millions of people in order to express their different ideas. The Five-Paragraph Essay formula was originally developed to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. Foley, however, believes that this process eventually separates the student from his or her written expression and should be used only as a first step tool for beginning student writers. Foley insists that the formula blocks discovery, squelches authenticity and undermines the reader's need for coherence. Foley shows that patterns of organization and more natural thinking can benefit the student.
The five-paragraph essay is perhaps the only kind of essay many students hear about. Argumentative essays, research papers, and even book reports have a tendency to fall into that formula strictly and allow for little flexibility. This can be a tedious and boring process, as John Warner’s fervent argument insists. However, Kerri Smith demonstrates a stronger argument with her defense of the five-paragraph essay by emphasizing throughout that it is simply a building block for more elaborate essays and by using credible influencers that prove her point effectively.
However, though John Warner’s argument is strong, Kerri smith’s argument is stronger. In Kerri Smith’s article “In Defense of the Five-Paragraph Essay,” She claims that the five-paragraph essay should stay taught in schools as a guideline for a well-structured essay. She explains the five-paragraph essay as an “introduce-develop-conclude structure” that even great expository writing follows this structure (Smith 16). She purposefully communicates to her audience this idea to show that this structure gives students the knowledge and capability to write a professional essay. The five-paragraph essay includes the three key points to have a well-structured and organized essay. By mentioning that other great writers use this form of structure, she creates a stronger argument as to why the five-paragraph essay is important to education. She continues her article by explaining her early stages of writing and how she was taught; over time, her teachers would show her new ways to improve her writing which, in the end, she was told to think “of those five paragraphs simply as a mode of organization” (Smith
The declaration of Independence is an amazing document. It’s authors portrayed their anger, their disappointment, and their dream in a new government through this document. A government meant to protect the people's rights. They manifested this dream. they used logos and pathos along with other forms of rhetoric to show the people the urgency of their situation.

We would do research on a subject or a person, and write about them. We, once again, were not allowed to be unique in our writing or think creatively or critically. This is the time when I was taught the five paragraph essay. As stated in Gray’s article, the five paragraph essay is detrimental to students’ writing. This format for writing is damaging because it doesn’t allow students to express their own ideas about a topic. It does not allow for any creativity or uniqueness in a paper. In tenth grade, I wrote many papers for my English class, but I never once got an A on them. I was led to believe that my writing was weak because I could not relate to what I was writing about. I did not have any emotional connection to the research papers I had to write, and it made it harder for me to write them. I had grown up not being allowed to think critically, and therefore, my papers in high school lacked creativity and deeper
Grammar is also vital to a well-organized essay. I have shown through my writing that I excel at creating grammatically correct essays. For example, the thesis in one of my essays, “The Clean Water Act has been successful and effective in past years in controlling certain types of polluta...
The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson (with the help of Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, as well as many others), was signed on July 1st, 1776 in Philadelphia. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence to appeal to the British Parliament and King and explain why the American Colonies wanted independence from England. Thomas Jefferson and the other delegates from the Second Continental Congress agreed that, “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator certain unalienable rights” (p. 112) which became the base for nearly all of the points made in the document. Logical and emotional statements were used throughout the document to make impactful statements that would convince the audience of the seriousness of the matters they were presenting.
The rate of breast cancer was found to be much higher (six times higher) than the general population. Initially, the probability of the calculation was found to be 1 in a million but was later adjusted to roughly 1 in 25. However, the statistics used to calculate these probabilities are not foolproof (see Q1). As the use of statistics in cancer clusters is questionable, it is more appropriate to focus on exposures. After a thorough examination, the investigators uncovered no convincing exposures to explain the high rate of breast cancer, both in the workplace or personal risk factors. Although unknown exposures cannot be discounted, it is likely the high rate occurred by chance rather than by a workplace related exposure. To provide further evidence, cancer rates in other ABC workplaces in the country, which would have similar exposure profiles, were calculated and found to be no higher than the general population. Clearly, the evidence uncovered did not suggest a harmful workplace exposure and, therefore, did not warrant the closure of the building. This reaction was probably linked with the initial dissatisfaction of the employees and the media storm and misinformation that accompanied the
One of the most famous pieces of history, the “Declaration of Independence,” was published on July 4, 1776, and was written by Thomas Jefferson. In the British colonies in America, Jefferson addresses not only the King George III of England but the American colonists with a formal document structured in a general to a specific list of grievances. The purpose is to explain why the colonies want to form their own country. In commanding and accusatory tone, Jefferson utilizes figurative language and rhetorical strategies to express his attitude towards the matter of American Independence and the King of England.
Through Miguel’s journey, the audience gets to see various traditions come to life and how the Land of the Living keeps its connections with those who have passed away. Whether it be through the ofrendas that keep the pictures of our loved ones to the alebrije spirits that guide the dead to the Land of the Dead, Disney Pixar put as much attention to the subtle details as they do to their top notch animation. Even the more niche details, such as the cempasuchil flowers and the story of “La Llorona” that have become synonymous with the Mexican holiday found their way into the movie. The imagery and symbolism present in the movie are just a part of the theme of the movie, but Disney Pixar made conscious decisions to pick and chose what was hidden or showcased. By Dreyfus and Kelly’s terms, Pixar became the articulators of Mexican culture by deciding to make a film regarding the importance of death in

Becoming a good student for most is not an easy task. One may be asking if there is a definite way to distinguish a good student and the answer is it 's merely impossible to say a student is considered “good” based on only one factor. Many people define good students as kids who have the best grade in the class. Since most of the time this is true, grades can only be looked at as a single way of how we define the term “good”. We must remember that even poor students can earn high grades occasionally, thus proving why grades are not the best indicator of a student’s quality. The “good student” label will most likely lay on the discipline that their parents laid down for them in school as a child. A good student can balance a positive attitude
