1-If you could have personally witnessed one event in history, what would you want to have seen?
Personally I would have wanted to be present during Martin Luther King’s I have a dream speech. This is because the speech was fundamental in bringing back the notion that America was meant to be a free country. The speech did not bring change only to America but to the world and its opinion on slavery. Therefore racial emancipation has allowed me to enjoy the benefits of being an international student.
2-If one of your parents was to be a famous person from any time in history, who would you want them to be?
If I had Elizabeth Cady Stanton as my mother for she was the pioneer of the Women Rights movement especially their rights to vote. As a social
Columbus was from Spain and his discovery allowed the nation to bring the first Western European settlers to the shores of North America. This led to the subjugation of the native inhabitants of America, which turned them into slaves who helped the colonist till their lands and plunder their precious metals. After this successful voyage, conquest and life in these new territories other European countries soon followed suit. They did not want Spain to enjoy the monopoly they had in the Americas. The Portuguese also came to establish colonies in America while England wanted a piece of this power and wealth too. The Virginia colony began a feudal system to acquire land and used slaves from the Western Africa coast. This new migration system is believed to have been the largest in the worlds as it resulted in millions of Africans moving to the Americas. Slavery became a norm in Virginia and Southern English colonies. While the Dutch and French settlements existed as a way of gaining the trading opportunities America provided instead of land or
He brought forth the changing ideas the country was experiencing and said it was ready to accept that women had the capacity to think intellectually like their male counterparts. Benjamin proposed that the laws must change to include women getting proper education because they were able to sway America’s morals and manners. The intellectual pursuits for women comprised of history, poetry, philosophy and religious texts counterbalanced with language and music lessons. Noah Webster advocated for public education for the people of America. His decision was made with his daughters in mind since he wanted them to get a good education. Webster education plan proposed that male and female students get a different education experience. His public education system would not discriminate against social classes, although it did not address the issues pertaining to race. Education would then serve as a way of developing cultured American citizens. Female education would allow women to achieve correct manners to use in their families and
...s were introduced. American women are truly lucky to have had Abigail Adams. Abigail Adams' efforts have given education for females. Charles W. Akers, the author of Abigail Adams an American Women, as well as I believe that if Abigail hadn't spoken out on these subjects, who else would have? Even though she did not accomplish her crusades, she planted the idea of her goal and objective into other minds. For her courageous foresight, women now have equal rights. Abigail was a talented letter writer, a supporter of her husband in his long civic career, and the mother of the most significant family dynasty in American public life. Abigail Smith Adams was the first fully liberated woman in American history and an inspiration to women for generations to come.
Women should not have the chance for an academic education. They should be trained to cook, clean, and take care of children. What better way would a woman help society? Would she help her neighbor more by teaching them mathematics they will never use or by helping their neighbor raise children? This is similar to what Booker T. Washington claimed about African Americans. He stated that the African Americans should attend vocational schools rather than receive an academic education so they could better further social change. W.E.B DuBois had a different approach to further social change by stating that some African Americans should go to academic schools, while others had trades, and some were considered fools who cannot learn. I believe that all children have the ability to learn whether they are black, brown, honeysuckle, or blue. Children all learn in different ways and in order to teach all children we must discover what way each child learns best. John and Evelyn Dewey demonstrate learn by doing and say that is the best approach to learning. I believe they are correct in some aspects. I will attempt to explain my philosophy on the best way to teach all children regardless of race or gender.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the leader of the civil rights movement in the 1960’s. His speech, entitled “I Have a Dream” was given in front of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. Dr. King used his speech as a rally for people, blacks and whites alike, who desired equality and social justice, but there is so much more to it than what appears on the surface. Dr. King employs a number of stylistic techniques, all of which serving a purpose too subtle for the naked eye to pick up. Dr. King uses the stylistic techniques of word choice, metaphors, and repetition to fuel hope and bring about change.
Martin Luther King did not know that his “I Have a Dream” speech would still be iconic 50 years later. In 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington. He was facing the problem of racial injustice for himself and everyone like him. He needed to create a speech that everyone could and would understand, could learn from, and could draw inspiration from. He had to address blacks and whites, he had to say things that everyone could relate to and he had speak in a way that he get the
Slavery existed long before colonial times. Beginning in the 15 century, Portuguese slave traders adopted the slavery and plantation system, followed by the Spanish who virtually developed and perfected the two (Johnson 14). In 1452, the Portuguese colony of Madeira became the biggest exporter and supplier of sugar for Europe in the west (Johnson 14). Ultimately, the wealth they had made attracted thousands to the industry. For this reason, servants and slaves existed before Europeans came to North America. However, the difference between servants and slaves was based on economical and social factors. Between 1619 and 1750, racism and immeasurable profit from agricultural commerce together, became an incentive
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, he elaborates on the injustices that were wildly plaguing America in the year 1963. Black people all over the country were being treated unfairly, locked up in prison for false crimes, and refused the great opportunities that white people were so lucky to receive. Before the year 1963, President Abraham Lincoln was the last person to make such an impact in the equal treatment of all people, so for about 100 years, blacks had no one to back them in their fight for equal treatment.
The European conquest for establishing North American colonies began with various motivations, each dependent on different, and/or merging necessities: economics, the desire to flee negative societal aspects, and the search for religious freedoms. Originally discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 in search for a trade route to Cathay (China), North America remained uninhabited, excluding the Native American establishments. Following this discovery, Spain –along with other European nations such as France, England, Sweden and the Netherlands– soon began the expedition to the new land with vast expectations. Driven by economic, societal, and religious purposes, the New World developed into a diversely structured colonial establishment consisting of (by 1733) the principal mainland’s Virginia, New Amsterdam (New York), Plymouth, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Sweden (Delaware), North and South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and lastly Georgia.
We should strive daily toward accomplishing the dream of Dr. King by Sherri Jefferson (2012)
Slavery in the United States first began in 1619 when Dutch traders seized a captured Spanish slave ship and brought those aboard to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia. When the North American continent was first colonized by Europeans, the vast land proved to be more work than they had anticipated and there was a severe shortage of labor. Land owners needed a solution for cheap and plentiful labor to help with the production of lucrative crops such as tobacco and rice. Although many land owners already made use of indentured servants- poor youth from Britain and Germany who sought passage to America and would be contracted to work a given number of years before they were granted freedom- they soon realized that in order to continue expansion they would need to employ more labor. This meant bringing more people over from Africa against their own will, depriving the African content of its healthiest and most capable men and women. Since individuals with African origins were not English by birth, they were considered foreigners and outside English Common Law and were not granted equal rights. Many slave owners intended to make their slaves completely dependent on them and prohibited them from learning to read or write. The oppression of black slaves was on the rise and many sources estimate that nearly twelve million slaves were brought to the ...
The reason for my choice of Marilyn Monroe is that she is known as a successful actress, an icon and somewhat of a legend. She was talented, resplendent and motivated woman. Otherwise, she has a complex personality. She wanted to have a good family because she was lonely and did not know how it was to belong to a real family. Unfortunately, she could not find the true love and have a good family. She also has some psychological problems because of her problematic history. I believe, her personality traits with her problems have significant effects on her personal life and also on her success (sometimes failure). Thes...
“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character,” Martin Luther King Jr. said this in his “I Have A Dream Speech” in 1963. Martin Luther King Jr. said this fifty years ago and today in the twenty first century, African Americans are still fighting for equality. Race relations in the United States is a problem that is constantly arising in communities all over. If nothing is done about the relationships, mainly between African Americans and white people, and Muslims and white people, then nothing will change. The pervasive belief

Also, she has always been a good friend to me and I will never stop thanking my mother for what she represents in my life. Moreover, I am glad that my mother is my role model because without her in that place I don’t know for sure if the person I would have followed would be as good as she is in fulfilling this task. A good role model is what everyone should have
My mother has taught me so much over the past twenty-seven years and not until now did I realize that my great qualities that I have as a leader, my mother is the person to thank for all of these qualities.
Many of us have role models in our lives and to most people role models are athletes and movie stars, but to me a role model is much more. To me a role model is a person who has positively influenced someone in life, and is not a person filled with selfishness and greed. They help shape someone’s personality, and characteristics. They are people who someone can look up to for advice in a hard situation, and know that they will give those words of wisdom. They will never judge our past actions, instead only look to help because they really care. A role model is someone who we should never feel awkward talking to about our problems. A perfect role model for me is my mother. She is a wonderful human being. She’s smart, wise, ambitious, patient and such a loving person. There are no words that can describe my gratitude towards her, but through this essay I will describe some of her characteristics that makes her my role model.
