A Detailed Analysis of the Inspector in J.B Priestly's An Inspector Calls
In this essay I will analyze the character of the inspector in the
play 'An Inspector Calls' and what the characters and myself think of
him .The play is set in Brumley, a fictitious town in the Midlands in
1912 just before the outbreak of World War One. It was written in 1945
and produced as a film in the 1950's. The play covers a wide variety
of topics such as history, politics and murder to name but a few.
The main role of the inspector is as the teller of the story or the
one who controls it. In the play the inspector affects all the
characters in one way or another by manipulating them. The inspector
is an enigmatic figure, you can't be sure of him and how he is
portrayed within the play, this is apparent when he first enters the
house of the Birling's:
"He creates an impression of massiveness, solidity purposefulness."
The inspector causes a great amount of tension between the older and
younger generations of the family. He has a big impact on Sheila and
she felt the most guilt and remorse for what she had done to the young
innocent girl. Unlike Mr. and Mrs. Birling, with which the inspector
has a much harder time of convincing them of their own guilt. The
inspector states:
'We're always more impressionable on the younger ones'.
The inspector's name could be, in many people's opinions, a pun,
Inspector Goole (Ghoul). A ghoul is a spirit, the supernatural - out
of this world. He is very simple in his way of investigation
"One person and one line of inquiry at a time
That is the way I like to work".
The inspector's appearance is that of a tall man in his fifties who's
main power comes from his voice. I think the inspector is a psychic or
supernatural being because of the way he seems to know when someone is
hiding something and can seemingly sense what is going on.
“Westbury Court” was told in a span of several years, when she was only a young teenager during the tragedy occurred and from then on, it had always haunted her. There is no way for her to entirely dismiss this incident from her memory other than moving forward by learning the consequence of being unmindful and realize the importance of “Sometimes it’s too late to say, ‘I shouldn’t have.’” If she is unable to do this, then she will have no choice but to consistently feel that guilty conscience of putting the two children in danger hanging over
There would be more of an effect on the audience at the time, as it
way she downed their inner feelings and did not treat them as real people . From

One method of dealing with guilt is to saturate one’s self in it. Leah Price, the stronger of the twins, gained an increasing amount of guilt while secluded from American society in the Congo. After being submersed in their culture for a few months and learning of their selfless ways, she soon looks upon her own past and sees regrets she had previously overlooked. For the first time she states that she actually feels bad about taking strength away from Adah while in the womb, leading to her presently crippled state. After Ruth May dies and they leave Kilanga, Leah’s guilt seems to pile up. Even though none of the girls were to blame for Ruth May’s death, she is haunted by a lingering feeling that she could have done something to prevent it. It is revealed from a journal entry when she is middle aged that she still regrets the death of Ruth May and reflects on it most nights, looking to Anatole for comfort. She suffers and will suffer the rest of her life, forcing herself to relive that faithful day. She never truly comes to terms with it and gains...
