Crucet says, “I don’t even remember the moment they drove away,” but unlike the author’s family, mine left after I moved in, they did not stay the whole first week into my classes. After the first day of being alone, I wish they

Narrated by the mother of two daughters, the story opens with an examination of one daughter's favoring of appearances over substance, and the effect this has on her relatives. The mother and her younger daughter, Maggie, live in an impoverished rural area. They anticipate the arrival of the elder daughter, Dee, who left home for college and is bringing her new husband with her for a visit. The mother recalls how, as a child, Dee hated the house in which she was raised. It was destroyed in a fire, and as it was burning, Dee "(stood) off under the sweet gum tree... a look of concentration on her face", tempting her mother to ask, "'why don't you do a dance around the ashes?'" (Walker 91) She expects Dee will hate their current house, also. The small, three-room house sits in a pasture, with "no real windows, just some holes cut in the sides" (Walker 92), and although, as Dee asserts, they "choose to live" in such a place, Dee keeps her promise to visit them (Walker 92). Her distaste for her origins is felt by her mother and Maggie, who, in anticipation of Dee's arrival, internalize her attitudes. They feel to some extent their own unworthiness. The mother envisions a reunion in which her educated, urbane daughter would be proud of her. In reality, she describes her...
In the short story, “Neighbors” written by Raymond Carver, a number of symbols were projected through various objects; from the separation of houses to the cat locked away in the bathroom, this is all for the purpose of conveying meaning to an overall theme. The story first introduces us to Bill and Arlene Miller, a so-seemed normal suburban couple with neighbors Harriet and Jim Stone who live just across the hall from where they do. As the story progresses on, the Stones give Bill and Arlene two simple tasks: feed Kitty and water the plants; but little by little, the significance of the two tasks become negligible in the eyes of the Millers and the life of Harriet and Jim Stone becomes vital to the wholly-preoccupied Bill Miller. The more
In a world full of cheaters, liars, and con artists, the last person anyone should lie to is themselves. However, that is exactly what took place in Raymond Carver's, "Neighbors." In this story, Bill and Arlene Miller were left with the opportunity to take care of Jim and Harriet Stone's apartment while they were away visiting family for ten days. The Millers had grown weary of their lives and often felt jealous of their neighbors, who they felt lived a happier and more exciting life than they. In their neighbors' absence, the Millers acted very strangely; trying on their clothes, drinking their alcohol, and spending excessive amounts of time in their apartment. They tried living the life of the Stones until one day they were locked out of their own apartment with no way of returning to their own dreary lives. This story shows that a person should never try to be something they are not. If a change is needed, it should always be from within or else you eventually find yourself lost, with nowhere to turn except for the long, dark, and deceitful world of lies.
Amanda, Tom and Laura’s mother, lives in her own fantasy world most of the time. Her mind is constantly going between the real world and a false world she has made up in her head. Amanda often does this when her life becomes too difficult to deal with. She reminisces on the years when she was younger, and had many gentlemen callers. Amanda uses this old memory as her new reality. “In The Glass Menagerie, there are enormous differences between Amanda's memories of her girlhood in Blue Mountain and her current life in a Depression-era tenement in St. Louis. Her attempts to ignore these differences can make her look ridiculous, for example when she goes overboard on the dinner for Jim, but they can also create sympathy as you realize how far she has fallen from her glory days in the Mississippi Delta”
Families are more than just a place for biologically related people to gather and relate, but are places that symbolize all the things that they stand for – such as love, hope, unity, and much more. In some families however, they are defined by the lack of these characteristics and the prevalence of other, less welcoming characteristics – such as conflict, resentment, and anger. While these other, less welcoming characteristics have the ability to damage and destroy relationships, they also have the ability to assist others in identifying areas in which the relationships are both strong and weak. The lack of family-like characteristics is prevalent in two classic American plays, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Death of a Salesman, where they play a critical role in advancing the plot and defining the character’s relationships.
Love between family is so strong that the struggles people go through do not compare to the fact that it was all for family. In the short story “The Worn Path,” Eudora Welty quotes “‘I bound to go to town, mister,’ said Phoenix”. Here, the author emphasizes the determination Phoenix Jackson
In “Paul’s Case” and “The Garden Party,” two authors describe efforts by ripening young adults to shelter themselves from the horrors of everyday realities. Whereas Paul isolates himself the mediocrities present in the working class, Laura begins her struggle as spoiled and isolated in a mansion and, thus, tries to distance herself from her elitist family.

The concept of sustainability was formalized in 1987 with the publishing of Our Common Future, also known as the Brunndtaland Report, by the World Commission on the Environment and Development (WCED). Sustainable development was defined in this report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (p. 43). Murphy (1998) identified 14 major components of sustainable development based on his interpretation of Our Common Future. A summary of these components has three general concepts that are environmental concepts, social concepts, and economic concepts. From these concepts one general goal for sustainable development can be developed. The primary goal of sustainable development is to meet the basic needs of society and extend the opportunity for a higher quality of life (WCED, 1987). To achieve this goal the economic system must be able to produce a continuous source of surplus and a source of technical knowledge through a social structure to solve the
Smoking is the major cause of lung cancer, but other major causes are radon, asbestos, and air pollution. Going into the 1900’s only 134 cases of lung cancer had been recorded. This number would mostly increase due to smoking; however, due to the increasing air pollution in countries such as China, more cases would arise. For the most part, lung cancer would disappear if it was not for smoking. As Charles A. LeMaistre explains, “And yet, the most difficult type of cancer to cure is also the easiest to prevent in the first place -- 80 percent to 85 percent of all lung cancers are directly -- unequivocally -- linked to prolonged tobacco use” (para. 4). Cigarette smoking caused 150,000 new cases of lung cancer in 1986. Due to lung cancer having such common causes thousands are affected by it each year and place it at the top in the most common and deadly

The Walt Disney Company was a leader in animation because he had Techno-color and new ideas for the time being of entertainment. Techno-color is the color they used in the fifties. People would wait in line to watch the next film even if they saw it twice. Disney's company makes all their money from theme parks, movies, tv shows and animations. With all the advertisement Disney has brought in a lot of money. Disney had and always will have an impression on kids. To there shows and vacation spots and even toys they play with. The Walt Disney company had nothing, then, one's dream is now a living empire.
The United Nations, a globally recognized authority on environmentalism and humanitarianism, defines it as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This certainly implies that sustainable development can only be met by ensuring that future generations may enjoy the same standard of life that is enjoyed by modern citizens in developed nations. As a result, sustainable development cannot be achieved by permanently depleting resources to meet the current generation’s needs – there must be some loop by which the current generation can maintain Earth’s state, so as to preserve it indefinitely. To continuously deplete resources is a practice that defies this definition, as Earth does not have an infinite capacity of dispensable material. Sustainable development is consistently described in terms of a convolution of three pillars: economic, social, and environmental. Ideally, effective sustainable development should result in the betterment of all three. Ban Ki-moon, the current Secretary General of the United Nations, clarifies these pillars and adds a fourth in this notable quote: “Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all. It offers a framework to generate economic growth, achieve social justice, exercise environmental stewardship and strengthen governance”. Making positive changes with regard to sustainable development are difficult, as it requires a consideration of all of these pillars. The ideal solution, in accordance with sustainability, should be economically viable, protect the environment from harm, and increase quality of life. It follows that sustainable development, by nature, is an undertaking that will require international effort and collaboration, as
