The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait of a woman that was painted by the famous artist Leonardo Da Vinci. This portrait was painted in oil on white Lombardy Panel Paper. It is an oil painting that utilizes the technique of sfumato. The painting technique sfumato overlays translucent layers of colors. This is used to create a blending of colors so there are no clear transitions seen. The materials used in sfumato are oil paints and a Lombardy Panel Paper. Sfumato is used to create a painting that appears to have no lines. The subject of this painting is said to be a women named Lisa del Giocondo. Meanwhile, many other artists and historians have suggested that the subject of the painting are various other people such as Costanza d’Avalos, Isabella of Aragon, Duchess of Francavilla, Isabella d’Este, Cecilia Gallerani, Pacifica Brandano, Caterina Sforza and Isabella Gualanda. Some theories also suggested the woman is actually Leonardo Da Vinci, the artist himself in his own painting. The woman portrayed in the Mona Lisa has no visible eyebrows or eyelashes. The women sits in a stance ...

Perhaps one of the most famous paintings Leonardo da Vinci painted is the Mona Lisa in which he painted in 1503. Many experts believe the portrait is of a very wealthy women who lived in Florence whose
This painting represents the highest artistic achievement of Da Vinci, succeeded in shaping an urban middle-class lady's image in the rising period of capitalism. Her posture in the painting is elegant with subtle smile; mysterious background shows deep boundless scene, incisively and vividly playing the painter’s brushwork of that unique misty "aerial perspective". The painter sought to achieve a clever union between rich character's inner feelings and her beautiful appearance, emphatically grasping accurate and implicative dialectical relationship in particular for feeling-expressing key parts like eyes and mouth in human face in the corner of his lips etc. The realm of romantic charm covered Mona Lisa's enchanting smile with a kind of mystery dream which is called "mysterious smile" by many art historians.
The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous art works of all time by the Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci. This portrait was done in oil and it is a piece that looks very real. On the other hand, “Wynwood’s Finest” is a well-known mural by Abstrk, who is an artist from Miami. This piece is graffiti on a wall and it looks more animated, fiction like, than the Mona Lisa.
“The Met’s very own Mona Lisa” (Tomkins 9). That is what Duccio di Buoninsegna’s Madonna and Child painting is known as today. “The Metropolitan Museum of Art bought the Madonna and Child for forty-five to fifty million dollars” (Tomkins 1). However, the painting was not always in public hands; in fact, the Met purchased the last known work of Duccio in private hands. Originally, the painting was held in the private hands of Adolphe Stoclet and his wife. When the couple died, their house and their collection went to their son, Jacques who held onto the painting, and passed it down to his daughters who lent it to an exhibition in Siena of Duccio and his school. The painting was eventually withdrawn from the exhibition and sold (Tomkins 2). Madonna and Child painting dated 1300 and was painted by Duccio di Buoninsegna a Sienese painter, who is considered the founder of modern Italian painting. I chose to research this painting because the subject matter of religious imagery and symbols interests me. Also because when I looked at the painting the emotion on the Madonna’s face almost jumped out at me. It is as if, she is looking at her newborn child with this deep sadness, which almost makes you think that the painting is foreshadowing the death of Jesus Christ. In addition, the burns of the side of the frame peaked my interest, as to why they were there. Art critics were also interested in this work they even consider Madonna and Child one of Duccio’s perfect works, and it said to be worth all the other paintings exhibited under the name of Duccio (Christiansen 14). The Madonna and Child painting’s iconography, imagery, emotional appeal to the viewers, and meaning all make this painting still a great work of art today.
Nineteenth century British biologist T.H. Huxley famously said, “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something (Quotes by…). This statement is reflective of the idea of a polymath, or the Renaissance man, that is, one whose expertise spans a significant variety of subjects and fields (Oxford Dictionaries). Leonardo da Vinci not only encapsulated this ideal but also ultimately was the model of the Renaissance man for centuries to follow. As many already know, Leonardo da Vinci was most famously as an artist, whose paintings have remained some of the most recognized and iconic images for over 500 years, but his genius did not end in the arts. He was also a brilliant architect, engineer, scientist, mathematic, writer, and more. There is little that Leonardo da Vinci did not do over the course of his amazing lifetime. Over the next few pages, I will briefly share the life of this extraordinary man.
In Florence, Italy, the famous, Leonardo da Vinci started painting The Mona Lisa one of the most well known paintings in the entire world, in 1503 and finally completed it in 1517. One of the biggest reasons for the popularity of the painting is the artist himself. Leonardo is one of the most recognized artists of all time. The Mona Lisa was painted after Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy merchant Francesco del Giocondo from Tuscany. The painting was created to be a celebration of their home's completion as well as the arrival of their second son. The Mona Lisa is one of the most well know paintings from the time of the Renaissance. This painting as well as Leonardo da Vinci, inspired and affected many of the artists and writers in the Renaissance. It also changed the way people saw and made art. During the Renaissance art was usually just what they saw. They drew people the way they were, with no real sense of freedom to be creative. The Mona Lisa's background was mainly different because of its landscape. The Mona Lisa was one of the first paintings if not the first to have an imaginary background. This means that the background was so unique, because no other artists had decided to create a piece with an Aerial view, creativity, and freedom. It opened up new possibilities for other artists to step of out their comfort zone and not only make what was expected of them.
found another painting that an artist did of the Mona Lisa. They discovered that this artist
Leonardo da Vinci used flawless subject matter, form, content, and iconography to create his painting The Last Supper. Leonardo da Vinci painted his interpretation of what the Last Supper looked like through his work of art. In the center of his painting he painted Jesus Christ, the son of God, in the middle of all of his disciples. On each side of him there are an even number of six disciples sitting at a table pointing to themselves and to each other. Da Vinci painted this scene inside of a dark room with three windows, eight doors, and a beautiful outside environment. In order to paint this scene da Vinci used flawless form.
The movie Mona Lisa Smile is set in 1953; post-war and pre-feminism. Katherine Ann Watson, a progressive Art History teacher, is hired to teach at Wellesley. This selective all-women’s college is described in the opening scenes of the film as “the most conservative university in the country” (Newell, “Mona Lisa Smile”, 2003). Watson wants to teach at Wellesley in order to influence the next generation of women. Some of the brightest female students in the country attended Wellesley. Among these students are: Joan Brandwyn, a driven student with a 4.0 GPA, Betty Warren, the daughter of the Alumni Association president, Giselle Levy, a flirtatious and outgoing young woman who has had an affair with a Wellesley teacher (Bill Dunbar), and Connie Baker. These women are bright, and largely members of the upper class. Their social class not only affords them the Wellesley education but vacations abroad and elaborate parties and weddings.
Leonardo is one of the few people who has the ability to make these qualities seem so perfect under his hands. His artworks are by far the most popular pieces of art that are in museums to this day. Recently a popular painting “Salvator Mundi”, painted between 1490-1500, has been placed up for auction and is estimated that the painting will sale for at least $100 million. This is just one of 16 surviving paintings that have made it through the years and it’s not even the most popular one. The Mona Lisa is the most popular painting by anyone to this very day. It was painted in the year 1503 and is famous for multiple reasons. One being that da Vinci didn’t just paint this ordinarily, but in a technique called sfumato and it was painted in atmospheric perspective as seen in the background. The technique sfumato is the blending of oil paints to blur the lines between colors. Atmospheric perspective was a new painting style where things far away in paintings looked blurry and this style was used in the background of the Mona Lisa. The word mysterious is associated with this painting and others that have come from his works. The smile that is presented in the Mona Lisa is somewhat puzzling in its own way and the person depicted in the painting is still not 100% known to experts to this day. The eyes that are on the Mona Lisa seem to watch and follow you when you look at the painting. One of the weird myths that
The Lady has a white “V” neck shaped collar while the Mona Lisa has gold trim on her square shaped collar. Mona Lisa’s dress also looks a lot more flowy and lighter while the Lady’s dress seems more layered and thicker probably due to the colder weather in northern Europe. The Lady only has a dark blue canvas for a background while the Mona Lisa has a clearly defined landscape behind her with trees, water and a dirt road. The veil that the Lady wears is made from significantly thicker cloth and wears a dark colored headband. The Mona Lisa’s veil is barely visible. The Lady has a lighter hair color and is tied up in a bun with some kind of net or cap around it with silver pins tucked into it to keep her veil in place, while Mona Lisa has her dark, wavy hair draping down her shoulders in a casual yet elegant manner. We can see the ears on the Lady, but the Mona Lisa has her ears covered by her hair. The eyes of the Lady are bright and hazel colored. Mona Lisa’s eyes are dark and you can barely see her pupils in her irises. Maybe that is how Leonardo got the effect that her eyes seem to be moving. It also appears that she has no eyebrows, or they’re severely
This is why Duchamp drew the unmistakable mustache and beard of Salvador Dali on the face of the Mona Lisa. Perhaps Duchamp felt that Dali's fame as a surrealist paralleled that of the Mona Lisa. Andy Warhol, another appropriating artist, used the image of the Mona Lisa in his work. Andy Warhol, a pop artist of the sixties, brought American life and culture back to art. This was after the abstract expressionists destroyed the notion and produced very personal and internal works.... ...
Nearly everything captured the attention of handsome, intelligent, and charming da Vinci. His dream of flying and pursuit of inventing often compelled him to abandon a project for the sake of exploration. Contrary to the beliefs of most notorious figures of the time, da Vinci comprehended the flaws of humanism and relativism. Rather, he recognized a higher authority, which he strove to obey. Today, da Vinci is most frequently recognized as the creative genius behind the fascinating “Mona Lisa.” “Mona Lisa” herself, was likely quite ordinary. In fact, “Mona” is simply an abbreviation of the title, “Mrs.” or “Madonna.” While the subject’s true identity is debatable, da Vinci’s skillful execution is undeniable. The blurred contours and dark undertones of his own technique, sfumato, pair with intentional fuzziness and purposeful shadows to create a portrait with exceptional depth and rich meaning. Opposed to the preferences of many artists of the day, da Vinci favored pleasant subjects. No doubt his employment of musicians and jesters to entertain his subjects is partially responsible for Mona Lisa’s distinguished smile. Indubitably, Leonardo da Vinci’s achievements set the standard for High Renaissance
