A Comparison of The Darkness Out There, Shredni Vashtar and The Signalman In "The darkness out there", "Shredni vashtar" and "The signalman", authors create an atmosphere of mystery and suspense. How do the authors achieve this and which do you think is the most successful? "The Signalman" takes place in and around a deep railway cutting during the 19th century. The genre is ghost story? The language used like 'damp stains', frozen finger tracing my spine' and 'disagreeable shudder' shows it could be a ghost story. It is written in the first person. The story begins with an unnamed visitor who shouts "hallao below there!" to the signalman who works below in a railway cutting. Dickens leaves the main characters nameless this adds suspense. He describes the cutting as 'deep 'clammy' oozier' 'wetter' and 'earthly dead smell'. These words suggest to us that it is a dark, dangerous and hidden place. Dickens has used detailed description of the cutting to create an atmosphere of mystery. "The darkness out there" the theme is the contrast between appearance and reality, how things seem and how things are. In this story, both time and place are very important. The story is told from Sandra's viewpoint, but it is written in the third person. The story begins almost like a picture postcard view of the country - we first see Sandra walking through a forest glade. It is almost like a fairy tale as well, a bit like Little Red Riding Hood. There are lists of plants and birds. But in the middle of the scene is the dark wood (Packers End) with its rumours of ghostly voices, dreadful things have happened here and has a reputation of evil. It is this that is the centre for mystery and suspense. Both stories deal with the aspect of darkness and uses darkness to create an atmosphere of mystery and suspense. Dickens writes about many things which are unexplained like when the narrator (visitor of the signalman) describes the signalman as being a mysterious person, which cannot be explained whether he is human or not.
The Signalman and The Red Room are well known examples of nineteenth century ghost stories How effectively do the authors of “The Red Room” and “The Signalman” create a sense of suspense in the story "The Signalman" and "The Red Room" are well known examples of nineteenth century ghost stories. The Signalman by Charles Dickens was written in 1865, which was the time of developing literacy. This short story was presented in three parts as it was previously in a periodical form; this technique was also used to create suspense and therefore leaves the reader at a cliff hanger after each episode, which in turn motivates the reader to read on. There were many rumors about this story as many people suggested that Dickens wrote this story as a remembrance of the day he was involved in a railway accident which killed ten people. Furthermore, He was writing in the Victorian times, when there was a massive change in technology as new inventions were created, e.g. the Train.
Both of these stories revolve around a lot of symbolism. These stories, since they really don't make a lot of sense on their own, force the reader to look deeper in an attempt to understand the ideas that Hawthorne tries to get across.
Word by word, gothic literature is bound to be an immaculate read. Examining this genre for what it is could be essential to understanding it. “Gothic” is relating to the extinct East Germanic language, people of which known as the Goths. “Literature” is defined as a written work, usually with lasting “artistic merit.” Together, gothic literature combines the use of horror, death, and sometimes romance. Edgar Allan Poe, often honored with being called the king of horror and gothic poetry, published “The Fall of House Usher” in September of 1839. This story, along with many other works produced by Poe, is a classic in gothic literature. In paragraph nine in this story, one of our main characters by the name of Roderick Usher,

Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, sets a tone that is dark, gloomy, and threatening. His inclusion of highly descriptive words and various forms of figurative language enhance the story’s evil nature, giving the house and its inhabitants eerie and “supernatural” qualities. Poe’s effective use of personification, symbolism, foreshadowing, and doubling create a morbid tale leading to, and ultimately causing, the fall of (the house of) Usher.

Racial discrimination still exists in these days with the institutional racism which is described groups of people against certain groups of people to limit their privileges. The United States is a country that has more than one ethnic and everyone is different to each other. In the past, I have seen many groups of people are discriminate to other groups based on their skin color, ethnic and personal identity. Institutional racism happened in school as well as in public. People discriminate others by looking at their skin and their race. People need to adapt to the new world and find out more about others culture to stop the institutional racism toward other races or ethnics.
The use of imagery or personification increases the suspense in the story, ‘Shadows cower’ is a very descriptive way of showing how frightening the mansion is. It sounds as if the shadows which are linked to darkness themselves are afraid of a greater evil. We wonder what this great evil could be that makes evil itself tremble. Another personification used is ‘candles writhing’. Candles are usually associated to gothic stories, as it is only small source of light within a vast darkness of the room.
In the short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe, diction is extensively used to create an air of suspense. Poe’s use of diction along with symbolism contributes to establishing a mood of despair. By using symbolic comparison between the Ushers and their house, the story’s suspense builds and the characteristics of the Ushers are portrayed. Poe’s cunning tactics are evident in the way he achieves a story of both suspense and horror.
Edgar Allen Poe used very detailed descirbling words to create a world of suspense in the readers head. “He was still sitting up in the bed listening; --just as I have done, night after night, hearkening to the death watches in the wall.” (2) He gives us a hint in the death watches in the wall and hearkening means listening, so they are making noises. With the details it’s also a better way to get an image in your head. For me I imaged an old busted up big house with cracks in the walls for death watches to come in and hang out in there. Read this quotation from the book, “I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in bed, crying out --"Who's there?"” (2) I can picture that scene perfectly and you dont know if the old man can see him so that brings more suspense. You can even image his face when his thumb slipped on the tin fastening. (Well, at least I can.) With great detail comes great suspense and Edgar Allen Poe hit the target right in the middle.

The story starts out on a farm in the 1940’s. The narrator is a woman who is telling the first person point of view of when she was a girl. The girl’s father was a fox farmer. He was a hard working, quiet man and the girl really respected him. Every winter the father killed the foxes that he raised and sold their pelts. The girl loved this time and found it seasonal, although her mother despised it.
The Victorian era was a main development stage for the ghost story genre and it was becoming increasingly popular among readers.

The novel Night tells the vivid story of the author, Eliezer Wiesel’s, life. The autobiography explains Elie’s struggle as a Jewish boy to maintain faith. The pious twelve-year-old, begins his life with a great deal of loyalty, but has trouble with the idea of God after the Holocaust begins. Eliezer cannot fathom the fact that there could be a God that would allow so much cruelty and suffering. The addition of the yellow star began the holocaust for his community; it was a death sentence accessory. Eliezer’s father believed it would pass by them, saying, “The yellow star? So what? It’s not lethal…” (Wiesel 11). The irony in that phase was shown when his father died for that very reason, the yellow star.
