A Comparison of Scenes From West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet Cinematography The scene before the meeting scene in West Side Story Maria spins around in her dress the camera then carries on spinning which creates a colourful blurred effect on the screen. The effect makes her look like she is almost spinning into the next scene. When Tony and Maria meet, all the other characters that were dancing, slow down and fade behind Tony and Maria. The room becomes dark and there is a spotlight on Maria and Tony. All eyes become focused on the two lovers. In Romeo and Juliet at the beginning of the meeting scene Romeo takes ecstasy. I think the director adds this in to create the feeling of light headedness like the feeling you experience when being in love. When the drug affects him the camera spins to create the blurred effect. In the actual meeting scene the fish tank always reflects either Romeo or Juliet depending on who the camera is filming. This is how the audience knows that eye contact is kept throughout. When Juliet is dancing the camera is made to look like its being shown through Romeo’s eyes of how he sees her. In the elevator the camera spins to symbolise the intensity of love and how it can almost make you feel physically dizzy and nauseous. When their identities are revealed to one another the camera zooms down to Romeo and up to Juliet this could show their place in society or foreshadow the balcony scene which comes later in the play. Songs When Romeo is under the effect of drugs the song in the background is upbeat and cheerful. The song is called “young hearts, run free” mimed by Mercutio. ... ... middle of paper ... ...Romeo and Juliet continue their exchanges and they kiss, but are interrupted by the Nurse, who sends Juliet to find her mother. When Juliet is dragged away they are both told where the other comes from and they both realize the grave consequences of their love. Maria and Tony Meeting scene In the film, West Side Story. The two rival gangs, the jets and the sharks meet at the school disco. They refuse to dance with any member of the opposing gangs which results in a dance showdown. At different ends of the dance hall Maria and Tony lay eyes upon each other. They fall instantly in love and meet in the middle of the dance floor and touch hands. They share a first kiss which is interrupted as the other gangs realise what is happening. Maria is sent home and Tony is left heartbroken that his true love is an enemy.

The major difference of camera angles is in the significant scene—the balcony scene. In the 1968 version, the director retains the balcony scene in its movie. It uses low angle to show Romeo’s vision, how he looks up to the balcony on the tree. And it uses high angle to show Juliet’s vision, how she looks down to the tree on the balcony. In the Franco Zafarelli (1901) version I believe Zafarelli made the way they first spot each other to be telling and to really have the love at first sight element to it. Romeo firsts spots Juliet, this brings a little smile to his face. Romeo looks in amazement and says “As a rich jewel, did my heart love til now”. Additionally, their first contact with each other was in the marasca dance, Juliet looks content to see Romeo but it is when she sees Romeo is interested she shows a lot of interest. In the prokiev version there is music already playing which suggest youthfulness. As soon as Juliet sees Romeo Prokofiev gave her the ‘I only want you’ attitude as she is impressed by Romeo’s solo. However, when her beloved Paris comes to dance with her she always has her head downwards so she cannot make eye contact with him. In the BBC studio production, the same happy and boisterous atmosphere is generated within the dance. As seen in previous versions Romeo has he eyes firmly gazed on Juliet and as this happens in this version Romeo rejects another woman who wants to dance with him. Juliet then mentions “my only love sprung firmly only hate”, she is mentioning how her only love is her enemy as Romeo is a montigeau. In the Westside story version Romeo arrives with his posy ‘the jets’ and this where the sharks are too. The two rivals try to have little conflict however it is stopped but this does not take Romeo’s mind of Juliet.

Their families or gangs have an hatred against eachother. Will this stop them from falling in love? They will undergo many changes in their life and have many problems that they will need to resolve through their journey of falling in love. Romeo, Juliet, Tony and Maria will soon learn that love can overcome the differences you have with the ones you truly love.
The movie then continues with the camera focussed on two towers labelled ‘Montague’ and ‘Capulet’ throwing shade at the audience. Romeo had unrequited love for Rosaline, who is mentioned, but doesn’t appear in the movie or the original script. But those feelings are dead the second he sees Juliet. The light and dark imagery that Shakespeare uses in this passage describes Juliet as a young and eager lover. Romeo associates Juliet with light meaning goodness. Then Romeo says that Juliet looks like the excellent night. The night that Romeo speaks of represents Rosaline. Romeo basically says through with light and dark imagery, that Juliet is as good as Rosaline to love. Romeo then compares Juliet to a "winged messenger of heaven" who filled with lightness and goodness. He says that all humans look upon this kindness as the messenger "bestrides the lazy puffing clouds" while doing his errands. Romeo explains using this imagery that everyone looks at Juliet because she gives off a stunning and intricate outlook.
West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet are both classics in their own way, they both are loved by many different groups and ages, over a long period of time. West Side Story is set in New York during the 1950’s, meanwhile Romeo and Juliet takes place Verona around 1530. Shakespeare’s beloved tragedy is written as a play with iambic pentameter throughout. While, West Side Story is a musical filled with singing and dancing. But can music truly capture the unyielding love, hatred, and sadness as told in the story of Romeo and Juliet? Director Robert Wise did just that, but modernized Shakespeare’s classic tale.
