The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger I chose to continue with my current article, “The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger”, by Cathleen A Cleaver. I chose to use the styles directed questioning and free writing to create my Essay about The dangers of the internet and the affects on children.
Directed questioning:
1. Who is affected by the internet?
2. What can we do to protect our children?
3. When do parents need to take control?
4. Why has this gotten so out of hand?
Free writing: The internet has become such a big deal in the last decade with personal and educational use that we as people are having a hard time protecting ourselves let alone our children, we need to keep them safe and secure but still allow them to explore the internet with freedom and trust. Because of children entering this world at an alarming rate they are at the biggest risk of

In recent findings 75% of Europeans use the internet (Livingstone and Haddon, 2009) and 65% of the teenagers’ have a Face book or My Space account (Lenhart et al, 2008). Children find that having these accounts is a place for them to meet new people and have a feeling that they belong, and to expand their friendships, but it is also a place for pedophiles to attack especially because it is so easy to manipulate who, how and whey they want, this is where a parent needs to gain control and talk with their children about what can happen on these sties and watch for any warning signs that may appear example maybe their child is acting differently or they ask to meet someone that the parent has never heard about before, looking on computer and viewing what sites the child has entered are ways to catch these instances’ early. Research suggested that 25% of victims are boys who are gay or that are unsure of their sexuality and most of the offenders are
The expansion of the Internet infrastructure across the world, has brought an increased audience. Which has provided expanded markets for businesses and exploited new opportunities. There are virtually countless social sites and media used by individuals to access and share experiences , content, insights, and perspectives. Parents today tend to believe they should spy on their kids online activity. I argue parents should respect the privacy of a child's social life and his/her internet activity.
The internet is used today for many reasons. It is a platform for people to stay in touch with others, entertain themselves and complete work tasks. In the following articles, “Internet Addiction Left my Brother Homeless” by Winston Ross and “The Pointlessness of Unplugging” by Casey N. Cep, the internet is discussed very deeply, but in two varying lights. In the article by Cep the author is writing from personal experiences and research. In the article by Ross the author is writing merely from opinions.

Online predators, pornography, drug trafficking, piracy, and hate sites are just some of the dangers that a child can face on the internet. The article “The Undercover Parent” by Harlan Coben states that parents should use spyware to monitor their children. Coben argues that parents should be able to know what is in their children’s lives. he believes that spyware can prevent children from being targeted by internet predators on social networking sites and even prevent children from being cyber bullied. I agree with Coben’s claim that parents should consider using spyware as a protection for their teens online. There are many possible dangers facing children on the internet and it is essential that parents install spyware.
This essay will look at what the digital world is and how child welfare can be safeguarded in a world with increasing digital usage. The digital world has expanded in the twenty first century and it is changing the way the world lives. New technologies are opening many opportunities and have many benefits for children and young people, however, they can also present some risks, and with The Office for National Statistics (2013) finding that 97 per cent of households with children now have access to the internet, it is more important than ever to look at safeguarding children and young people.
There are consequences of sharing personal information Children increasingly use social networking sites and online diaries. These have a minimum age but children of 9 years or younger have been known to use them. Children can place information about themselves online, which makes it easy for them to be identified. Some include addresses, phone numbers and sometimes even photographs. This makes them easy targets for adults who wish to exploit them by: talking to and building †̃friendshipsâ€TM with children online with the intention of meeting the child – this is called grooming encouraging children to engage in conversations which are
Generally, social networking provides online sexual predators with an easy gateway to youths. Users of online social media services tend to share copious amounts of personal information on online profiles, these same users control who can or cannot see their information by utilizing privacy settings. The problem with these “privacy settings” is that they are often hard to manipulate, leaving a multitude of online profiles vulnerable to often explicit offers from online sexual predators. Lacking the ability to protect their information properly, users are in jeopardy of being contacted by sexual predators. In fact, “[d]uring the years prior to the explosive expansion of social networks, most online sexual predators attempted to contact youths through chat rooms and message boards. In recent years, however, predators are increasingly targeting minors over social networking services”, showing that social networking directly puts youths in peril (Guo, 626). This sheds light on the fact that social networking is basically a way to herd youths and display them ...
The Internet provides irrefutable benefits in expanding a teenager’s ability to grow with modern technology, technical opinions, proficiency and other skills. However, using the Internet, especially the social networking websites, unsafely puts the children at very high risk for many
A major threat to the people who use the internet, especially children, is the sex industry. It is very hard to ignore as there are thousands of sites of which many have very unobvious site names. This makes it very easy for children to access accidentally sites which are very inappropriate and can have great harmful effects on a young childs very impressionable mind. It is not acceptable for a young person to be exposed to the intimate world of adult pornography which can include anything from child porn to bestiality. Fortunately y...
The online world is a perilous place full of terrible people and children need some form of supervision because the Internet could ruin their lives. When children go online, they become susceptible to a multitude of danger, and they might be doing things on the Internet that are inappropriate. They also might be receiving highly inappropriate
To begin with, while using the internet, children are exposed to different kinds of materials. In most cases, they are exposed to inappropriate ones such as sexually explicit materials and/or violent ones (Magid, 2003). Some children, especially adolescents, are curious about sexuality and sexually explicit material; they can move away from their family and seek fulfillments for their curiosities online. Hence, dangerous situations commonly occur due to the child molesters on the other side of the net waiting to find those children, seduce them, and manipulate them (Freeh, 2008). It is also worth mentioning that other children can be exposed to such resources by accident; they can receive them through e-mail spam or when a popup that contains violent or sexual materials opens in front of them (Magid, 2003). Also, there are some people who attempt to sexually exploit children online. Some of them progressively seduce their targets through the use of attention, affection, kindness, and gifts. They are often willing to devote considerable amounts of time, money, and energy during this course of action. They listen to and empathize with the problems of children. They are aware of the latest music, hobbies, and interests of the youngster. They also attempt to gradually lower children's inhibitions by slowly introducing sexual context and content into their conversations (Freeh, 2008) which can get them to gain the trust of those targeted children and can lead to meet them face-to-face.
When the mutual bond of trust between parent and child is tested, it can cause even the most stable child in this relationship to feel betrayed and fearful if they do not have confidence in their parent. With the presence of modern technology, there has never been a greater need before for parents to educate their children to be aware of the dangers of the Internet. The Internet is a vast collection of knowledge, resourceful to anyone who accesses it. But easy accessibility to any resource can make anyone feel too adjusted to using it without exercising precaution.
...declared that sometimes it’s easy to find incorrect information on the Internet, which can lead to giving people a wrong perspective on different things. It´s also written that computers and TVs and other media gadgets can contribute in children getting overweight. They can also be afflicted with undeveloped social skills and even start to show an addiction behavior for example being obsessed with their computers etc. Media can cause unhappiness in children´s lives. It can contribute in children getting ruined because of extreme pictures in for example inappropriate TV scenes, or because of violence in computer games. This can lead to a development of violent behavior.
Internet has become a new equipment to improve violence and disobedience. Teenagers can have easy access to the pornography sites or adult’s chartrooms. As a matter of fact recent researches has shown that Despite the potential negative effects on children using the Internet, more than 30% of surveyed parents had not discussed the downside of Internet use with their children (Internet Advisory Board, 2001), and 62% of parents of teenagers did not realize that their children had visited inappropriate Web sites (Yankelovich Partner...
Computers and the Internet are great items for the household, but along with these advantages there are disadvantages. They are constantly changing the way that we live and do business. The Internet puts tons of information at a click of a button. This information is a great educational tool for children. The Internet can be very dangerous to young children, and there is also research being done now about possible problems that adults have with computers. It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure that the Internet is a safe place for their children.
