The beginning of the novel A Child Called It written by Dave Pelzer, is describing the heartache and abuse that the child David Pelzer endures everyday from his mother. He has to rush around and do his chores before he can even think about eating breakfast. It is very clear that the child is afraid of his mother, and he knows that he has to do certain things or else he will be punished. He usually does not get food in the mornings unless he has his chores, this day though he rushes to get them done and then only gets to eat his brothers left over cereal. In the following chapters Dave gives a lot of descriptions and details about his family including his brothers, mother, and father. He explains why he loves them so much and why he feels …show more content…
so loved and comforted by them. He talks about all of the different holidays that he enjoyed with his family. His favorite memories are all listed and he tells why he loved them so much. One of his favorite was Christmas morning when his mother got all of the boys yellow hard hat tonka work hats to march out in on Christmas morning. He talks about how he gently wakes them up with her soft voice. With the following chapters you can hear and feel the tone dramatically change with his mother’s attitude and actions.
He starts telling us how the mother targets Dave and makes the brothers silent around him. Often at nights he dreams and fantasizes about eating actual food and getting treated right by someone. He wishes when he got called into the office at school that they would tell him that his father was coming to save him, instead of just questioning him about all of his markings and bruising that they know is from his …show more content…
mother. A cop comes to the school and they have a meeting with Dave and his other teachers, and the school nurse.
He felt different about this and knew something was different about this meeting. He knew that other people knew that he was getting hurt by his mother, but it was so hard for him to tell on his mother. It was hard for him because he knew that his mother was ill in ways that she could not control, and that even though she was hurtful she really did not mean to hurt him in the ways that she did. The cop drove Dave to the police department and he was very nervous telling the cop to please not call his mother and tell her that everyone knows how she’s been treating Dave for so long. Terrified he waited the cop dial his mother’s phone number and he told his mother Dave will be in the possession of another home, and people he will not be coming home. Dave’s mother chose to punish him in harsh ways including starvation and mental abuse like isolation and tormenting him into thinking he was a “bad boy”. She constantly had him saying “I’m a bad boy” that soon after he started believing it. That upcoming Christmas Dave’s mother told him that only good boys and girls get presents on Christmas and that he had not been good, therefore he would not receive any presents. Dave’s father ended up buying Dave a paint set and his mother was not
pleased. There are many literary elements that are used in the novel. Most being similes, metaphors, hyperboles, and juxtaposition. The main juxtaposition that we see is that Dave uses flashbacks of Christmas often throughout the book. This is when he felt the safest and had the best of times with his family. It’s used to bring out a deeper meaning of what makes Dave feel safest. Dave’s father started staying away from home more and this made Dave feel very alone. The father is a character that makes dave feel safe and not isolated. After his father started leaving Dave he realized that his father must of thought that his mother had won. He couldn’t help them anymore. This is easily the worst nightmare for Dave. After his father started leaving and not coming home for days on end, he could see the look in his mother’s eyes as soon as she would walk out of the door. He was not safe after he left their home. His father started going to work more and leaving Dave. He knew that once his mother stabbed him and he went to his father
The resolution in the story becomes apparent once Dave realizes that he can communicate with his daughter if he just lets her be
A Child Called “It” brings our attention to mental abuse that adults may inflict on a human being and in this particular case, a child. David’s mother respects the family’s dogs more than she respects her own son. The dogs are fed every day, yet she attempts to starve David. Although David has two other brothers, they learn to call him “the boy” and to pay no att...
In the book “There Are No Children Here” by Alex Kotlowitz, the author followed the lives of two young brothers (Lafayette and Pharoah) while they grew up in the harsh streets of Chicago in the late 1980’s. The author uses the story of the two boys’ lives to discuss the social divide in our very own society and to persuade readers that there is a major problem in “the projects” of the United States.
'You are a nobody! An It!?(Pelzer 140). These were the raw, disheartened remarks that came from the disgusting coldhearted mother's mouth. These painful hurting remarks at her son was how the book got its title and that's what interested me in reading this book. A Child Called 'It', by Dave Pelzer, is a life-changing story about, a young boy who is starved, beat, and tortured by his mother and her cruel games, yet he manages to turn his life around when he grows up. This young boy uses his faith, self-discipline, and will power to overrule his mother's destruction and life damaging obstacles.
and he didn’t even have anything to cover him. Dad would occasionally sneak him scraps of food, but if he didn’t he would have to starve. 5- Bathroom This is where mother played many games of torture with Dave. She played 'Gas Chamber' which is a dangerous game where Dave has to stay in the bathroom with many different chemicals causing him to choke. She also made him swallow ammonia and made him sit in a bathtub of freezing cold water for hours.
Dave Pelzer’s book “A Child Called ‘It’” told his story of growing up in an abusive household. Pelzer’s family at first was just like any other, his parents loved each other and their children and they would do many fun activities together. As time progressed a change happened and his mother began to always punish Pelzer rather than any of the other children. The small punishments soon began to grow and become more and more serious. Soon, Dave’s father and siblings could not help him out of fear that their mother and wife would turn on them. Dave was banished to the garage where he would have to sit at the bottom of the stairs waiting until his mother called him to do his chores. Usually Pelzer would be starved for very long periods of time
"Children of the Forest" is a narrative written by Kevin Duffy. This book is a written testament of an anthropologist's everyday dealings with an African tribe by the name of the Mbuti Pygmies. My purpose in this paper is to inform the reader of Kevin Duffy's findings while in the Ituri rainforest. Kevin Duffy is one of the first and only scientists to have ever been in close contact with the Mbuti. If an Mbuti tribesman does not want to be found, they simply won't be. The forest in which the Mbuti reside in are simply too dense and dangerous for humans not familiar with the area to enter.
The main characters are David, his mother, and father. David, the abused child, cannot escape his mother’s punishments. David’s mother is a drunken, abusive mother that refers to her child as “It”. David’s father is caring and understanding, but cannot help David escape. The mother and father drastically change after the alcohol abuse. David also changes in his attitude towards his parents.
1. In the book, the father tries to help the son in the beginning but then throughout the book he stops trying to help and listens to the mother. If I had been in this same situation, I would have helped get the child away from his mother because nobody should have to live like that. The father was tired of having to watch his son get abused so eventually he just left and didn’t do anything. David thought that his father would help him but he did not.
When Dave accidentally kills the mule, it shows the responsibility of true manhood that Dave is clearly not ready to take on. The Alexander 2 ending, where he decides to leave his house when everyone is asleep. Dave is also mad how everyone is treating him, and how all he ever gets to do is work all the time and has never been given anything in his life. Dave is even mad at his family, especially his mother, for ratting him out. He did not want to sell the gun and give the money to Mr. Hawkins, as his father instructed him to do.
Dave keeps secrets from his own wife we first see this when Dave tries to talk about what happened to him all those years ago. He says the name of the people that took him for the first time ever Dave says he has never told anyone their names before. Dave also says he had to pretend to be someone else and that’s why part of him died.

The book “This Boy’s Life” by Tobias Wolff is a memoir written about the author’s childhood memories and experiences. The author shows many different characters within the book. Many of them are just minor character that does not affect the author much in his life choices and thoughts throughout his growth. But there are some that acts as the protagonist and some the antagonist. One of them is Dwight, the protagonist’s or Jack’s stepfather. This character seems to be one of the characters that inhibit Jack’s choices and decisions. This character plays a huge role in Jack’s life as it leaves a huge scar in his memory. The author here spends the majority of time in this character in the memoir to show the readers the relationship between Jack and Dwight.
Parents tell their children to think first and act second. Most people forget this as illustrated in Yann Martel’s satire “We ate the Children Last,” written in 2004. It starts out with an operation and humans are given a pigs digestive tract to cure cancer. Because the operation made people eat garbage, they gave it to the poor At this point everybody wants to have this operation. When people started going cannibalistic, the government puts them together to eat each other. This started out as a good thing by curing cancer. After that everybody from the poor to the people administering the operation didn’t pause long enough to consider the consequences. Real world examples of people not pausing to consider the consequences are seen frequently, whether, it be on a small or big scale. Yann Martel is saying that
There are numerous psychological theories which could be applied to this situation to explain why Dave acted so strangely.
