The Case describes Madonna’s biography and how her creativity, ambition, and business skills made her successful in the world of entertainment. It indicates that Madonna’s childhood has been the major influence on her success as an adult. According to Music-Mic’s website, Madonna was born in the suburbs of Detroit. Her mom passed away from breast cancer when she was only six years old. When Madonna discussed about her mother to CNN News, Madonna mentioned, “You walk around with a big hole inside you, a feeling of emptiness and longing. And I think a lot of times that’s why you become an overachiever.” At the age of nineteen, Madonna moved from Michigan to New York City with only $35 in her pocket. While living in New York City, she tried to …show more content…
In the early 1980’s, as Madonna began her singing and dancing career with her former Michigan boyfriend, Steve Bray, they started writing and performing dance songs together at various nightclubs in New York City. Since then, Madonna has been writing her own lyrics and music, develop appealing dancing movements, and creates flamboyant clothing that grabs everyone’s attention. Many teen fans copied Madonna’s trademark image of “messy and badly dyed hair, neon rubber bracelets, black lace bras, white lace gloves, and chunky belt buckles” in 80’s. Even though Madonna wasn’t famous any longer in 90s, Madonna’s image was still strong in entertainment business. It was her strong personality, determination and hands-on management that led her to gain such fame and …show more content…
She achieved a business strategy in her success by committing to the “goals that are simple, consistent and long term.” It is similar to Lady Gaga’s account in the textbook that Madonna devoted all her energies and abilities to produce the simple and long-term goal of “ruling the world” of fast-moving entertainment business. Madonna’s business strategic also indicates the “profound understanding of the competitive environment” that she swiftly exited from money-losing recording industry and reentered into concert tours. Madonna’s intuition played very important role in her success to have the opportunities to achieve her goals. She understands the market and knows how to respond to the changes in competitive entertainment environment. Madonna recognizes the ways to exploit her strengths and talents, while eliciting the talents of others. Madonna’s business strategy is in reinventing herself continually to find the new ways maintain her place in the spotlight in the fast-moving and constantly changing entertainment
Debra Rathwell is the Senior VP for AEG Live. Rathwell oversees the active New York office of AEG along with being a force in national touring. Rathwell has more than 30 years of experience in the industry and her dedication inspires me. I know she is well respected in the industry and I think it is impressive that she books on average 800 shows every year. Being a woman in the music industry is a big challenge, but Rathwell proves to me and the world that being hard working will help prove yourself. The first step that really started Rathwell’s career was during her last year at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. Rathwell was Harvey Glatt’s assistant and went on to work as Bass Clef Entertainment, which partnered on shows with Canada’s concert leaders. This introduced Rathwell to the industry and the rest was like a snowball effect, one job led to another. Another step Rathwell took in her career was pivotal was joining Donald Tarlton for 12 years at DKD. With DKD, Rathwell managed a staff ...
Celebrities hold a strong power to influence the lifestyle trends of an audience. As members of the entertainment industry, celebrities are looked up to as role models by a large general public. With such high exposure, celebrities essentially hold the power to positively or negatively influence their followers, from fashion trends to behavioral tendencies, the attitudes and lifestyle habits of celebrities influence cultural qualities and the way in which many people function within society. Mindy Kaling’s career started when she became an intern on the popular show “Late Night with Conan O’ Brien”. Mindy was a 19-year-old sophomore at Dartmouth College when she first started her internship.
Queen Latifah played a big role in the hip hop industry as a female MC, and still is relevant to this day. She influenced millions of people especially in the black community for equality between women and men. She’s an American song-writer, actress, fashion producer, model, female MC, feminist, television producer, record producer, and talk show hostess. The Hip-hop culture began around the 1970’s in Bronx, New York and it was mostly amongst the Black and Latino community at that time. Hip Hop emerged out of an atmosphere of disappointment, anger, hate, discrimination, and disillusionment which; made it easy for the audience to comprehend and enjoy the music not as a song, but as a public personal message for each person to understand. Hip-hop was born in numerous places: in the neighborhoods, in the parks, playgrounds, bedrooms, bathrooms, a broken home, and even on the street corners. MC-ing and DJ-ing were at the center of this emerging culture, but hip-hop was always bigger than just the music, it was also break dancing and graffiti. The hip-hop fashion was very popular back then and some materials are coming back in today’s fashion as well: kangol hats, big bright jackets, gold jewelry chains, brand name sneakers like Adidas, established sportswear, tracksuits, large eyeglasses, big waist belts, jumpsuits, and any kind of over-sized clothing. The graffiti was a new form of expression that employed spray paint as a story on walls as the canvas. The police called that vandalism; but the people of hip hop called it art: a form of self-expression. Hip hop has been largely dominated by male artists, but there have been some notable exceptions. Queen Latifah was one of the few early female exponents of the styl...

On the outside Demi Lovato was every young girl’s idol in the late 2000’s. Lovato had her own successful television show, Sonny With a Chance on Disney Channel and starred in the Camp Rock movie series with the Jonas Brothers. However, on the inside she was suffering from multiple mental illnesses. She has suffered from bulimia, self-harm, anorexia, and depression. In 2011, she was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Since hitting rock bottom in 2010 she is slowly recovering from her mental illnesses. Bipolar disorder is described as unusual shifts in mood, activity levels, and energy (Bipolar Disorder). Specifically, Lovato suffered from bipolar depression (Be Vocal). Recently, she partnered with five mental health companies to promote
One of Piero della Francesca’s well known paintings known as, Madonna and Child with Two Angels (Senigallia Madonna), is a piece that caught my eye while browsing The Metropolitan Museum of Art located on the Upper East side of Manhattan. This piece, created circa 1478 was done in Sansepolcro, Italy and was executed with oil paint on wood sized at 24 in. x 21 1/16 in.. Piero della Francesca’s biblical portrait of the Virgin, Christ, and angels is a central icon in the Catholic church specifically of the Renaissance (rebirth) in Italy. Throughout this piece, there is an underlying theme of the Virgin Mary’s son, Jesus Christ as he is intimately represented. It is an iconic scene that has been depicted by many different artists of the Renaissance but the way that Piero della Francesca represents his iconic piece differs in that it is more than a portrait, it is a scene of the Virgin Mary and her child being blessed.
On August 16, 1958 Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born in the world. Madonna is the third of six children as well as the middle child. She was somewhat “the sissy of the family” and she would often use her feminine wittiness to get her way (A&E Biography 2011). Madonna was raised in a devoted Catholic family and attended the Sacred Heart School through her academic years. Her talent for dancing enabled her to graduate high school a semester early and then attend the University of Michigan on a full dance scholarship. Madonna soon dropped out of college and moved to New York to further her dance career. In order to pay for rent, Madonna worked a string of odd jobs that include modeling nude, working at the Russian Tea Room, and performing at the American Dance Center. While working at these jobs, Madonna also began to pursue her music career by forming several bands and then deciding to go solo once she met Camille Barbone of ...
Madonna is a controversial legend whose attitudes and opinions on sexuality have forced the public to take notice and change the image of females in society. Madonna believed women’s sexuality was a natural aspect of life; therefore, she dared to challenge the rules and definitions of femininity and sought to expand the meaning of it. In a male dominated world, she wanted to focus on the importance of women and let them have a voice of their own. Madonna shattered all the myths on traditional beauty standards and made her statement on sexuality and feminism, which changed how society viewed the standards of beauty. She impacted female power by encouraging sex- positivity into her music and her style. It is mainly because of Madonna that ordinary women, and women in modern entertainment have more choices and freedom which continues to influence further generations.
The first main example of physical image becoming a major marketing point in the music industry lies in the career of Elvis Aaron Presley. His image was the building point of his reputation, as he represented the first major example of a sex symbol in music. Presley has been described as a “sex god”, which inspired other artists to emulate him in the future and use sex to sell their music. (Long, “Elvis the Sex God”, Vox Magazine) and various television and music executives described how visually captivating his performances were. Although Presley had undeniable talent, his talent was not the only selling point that his handlers used to market him to the public, which was quite a departure from the classical and jazz eras, where musical skill was the prominent issue in determining the popularity of musicians such as Beethoven, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. Nicki’s apparent feminist agenda through her music and identity is being distributed to her wide audience, which covers a massive array of hip-hop and pop music fans. Her wide reach and continual influence has the potential to lastingly correct the anti-feminist, misogynistic tone of the male-dominated genre and culture. Despite her hyper sexualized image and defamatory lyrics, she is arguably a positive, albeit controversial, feminist role model, which is evident in her motivation for success, lyrical discourse, and use of and meanings behind her alter egos.

Marilyn Monroe was an undeterred woman through most of her life. Her beginnings were often regarded as exceedingly unfavorable. Born Norma Jeane Morteson, Monroe was daughter to a single, mentally unstable mother and was often subjected to frequent relocation with different foster families. Her early hardships led to her first marriage at age 16 to James Dougherty. He brought Marilyn happiness, an emotion she had not frequently visited in her childhood. During their four years of marriage, James enlisted in the army. Marylin intended to support him, so she took up a job in a factory inspecting parachutes. Marilyn’s life changed when a photographer looking for new models, discovered her; they needed fresh faces to help with
Similarly to other industries, females are unequally represented within Hip Hop culture across the board. From the start, emcees were traditionally males, proving the struggle for a woman to pursue a career in Hip Hop difficult. In modern society, it seems the culture is obsessed more with how a woman is portrayed rather than if she is a talented artist. For advertising and recognition, it is almost imperative that a female artist wears tight, skimpy clothes and “give the audience a show” with provocative dancing and lyrics. For women, beauty is basically expected by society. Keyes might refer to most of today’s female artists as “fly girls” (2016). Salt N Pepa and TLC are prime examples of prominent female figures within Hip Hop culture that dressed in a way to attract attention. For these women, the outfits merely grab the attention of the audience so they can then focus on the message behind their lyrics. While women are already underrepresented in the field, they also have to work harder for the same success that male counterparts
