The roles of a social worker are to shield vulnerable people, develop relationships, assess client’s needs, and identify people and communities in need of help (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S Department of Labor). Social work is a physically, mentally, and emotionally draining field of work, involves low income, and unappreciative clients, but social workers do not choose this occupation for the income but for the outcome (Paradis 3-4). First off, A LCSW must be licensed in the state they practice in, so many MSW students must think ahead if they want to continue to be a LCSW (Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S Department of Labor) . Not only does an individual who wants to pursue a career as a LCSW need to think about where they wish to practice in, but they also need to have certain key skills as well. Being a social worker is a very physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding job. Future LCSWs need to have good physical and emotional strength to tolerate the long, irregular hours, and strain from the job (Paradis 3-4). Dealing with individuals is not the easiest job, so you need to have good people skills, as well. The individual needs to show comprehensive skills, perseverance, good listening skills, do well at applying ideas, expressing yourself clearly, cheerfulness, problem-solving skills, and able to take directions well. Social work is an ever changing job. Not one day is the same from the last. One has to be prepared for the unexpected, and always on his or her feet. He or she should have much tolerance, willpower, and eagerness to learn and study hard (Paradis 93). Intellectual curiosity is a very important trait a social worker needs to have because it is difficult to leave unsolved problems and/or unanswered questions. A genuine liking for people and the understanding of fears, needs, and undeveloped strengths is a given. Lives of others may be in your hands. A social worker must be reliable and responsible. They need to solely be there to focus on the patient and help with his or her needs. Social work is a selfless occupation (Paradis
... way media portrays the female body, we could help women to become media literate so they can recognize those images and not really and have been manipulated. Sands said, “If women can be taught not to internalize the sociocultural ideal, they may be able to counter the negative effects of the ultra-thin images that are almost inescapable” (Sands & Wardle, 2003).
Becoming a social worker is dependent on numerous factors, one of which being education. “A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) degree is the most common minimum requirement to qualify for a job as a social worker, however, majors in psychology, sociology, and related fields may be sufficient to qualify for some entry-level job” (Chao & Orr, 162). Many people when pursuing the goals of being a social worker, however, are most interested in jobs in public agencies and/or having their own practices. “A master’s degree in social work (MSW) is necessary for positions in health and mental health settings and typically is required for certification for clinical work” (Chao & Orr, 162). One’s level of school is not the only thing employers are focusing on when looking to hire social workers. Along with one’s education, a social worker must have “a broad liberal arts base which includes a knowledge of the social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, political science, and economics) to provide explanations about the nature of human society and the human condition” (Johnson, 48). There are many more skills that are just as essential, if not more beneficial, to the employer as well as client.
In today 's society, women have been getting more attention on important issues that affect their lives. Feminism is becoming more popular and people are starting to realize the inequality that woman face is more than just a small scale issue. The sexism and oppression that are the result of living in a patriarchal society, play a large role in how women in our culture are treated. The effects that living in this society have had on the individuals that take part in these societies, are very commonly highlighted by the media. Media as a tool that is worldwide can easily influence how one is seen in the modern society. It can help women improve their representation and stop the creation of strong stereotypes. The motivation that drives stereotyping of women is the image of an ideal woman. According to Stephanie Nicholl Berberick, who established a work in The New York Sociologist, the media exploit women into portraying characters that do not reflect the true image of women, which leads to a wrong message being expressed to the society. Women portrayed as skinny and sexy would create stereotypes that can influence other women that are not related to media (Berberick). When women portrayed such roles, they tend to affect the society into thinking that all women are similar. However that is not the case, as all women have different personalities and attributes that make them different from other women. Women should not bother about men’s ideal thinking of how women should look and behave as women have the same rights as men and they are no different from each other. However, the issue is that media chooses to only display the ideal image of women rather than the true self. Even so, this issue can be fixed if women choose to gain a better and less exposed representation in the media, it is possible that stereotyping women can be reduced to a small

Social Work is a discipline that can be a very rewarding experience for both the worker and the client. The practice involves working with individuals, families, or groups who are struggling to cope with life`s challenges. The social worker must combine his or her personal qualities, creative abilities, and social concerns with the professional knowledge in order to help client’s social functioning or prevent social problems from developing (Bradford W. Sheafor, 2008, p. 34). Social work practice seeks to promote human well-being, while addressing the processes by which individuals and groups are marginalized or diminished in their capacity to participate as citizens (Ian O'Connor, 2006, p. 1).
For years, when I thought of Social Workers, I imagined a person coming into a client’s home and taking their kids away for neglect. Later, I found out that social workers could go into so many dimensions, such as clinical social workers, case mangers, and even administrative positions in agency settings. Furthermore, I realized that I was maturing into an adult. For example, when I began telling people of my decisions to become a social worker, a lot ...

The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
