While conducting my research about Criminal Justice, I interviewed my dad, Michael Renaud who is an ICE HSI Special Agent himself. He mentioned that “sometimes connecting the dots is not as simple as it may appear.” Getting into the federal government is tough, but you shouldn’t let anyone tell you you can’t follow your dreams. The federal government looks for agents with good backgrounds and high standards. You also need to stay out of trouble and don’t stop trying. You need to be able to have excellent writing skills and be well versed in a wide array of Federal Laws. Special Agents conduct long term investigations into large scale criminal organizations. The areas investigated include narcotics and human smuggling, cyber crimes, financial crimes, terrorism, national security and arms smuggling. After three or four years, an ICE HSI Special Agent can test for a supervisor exam. If successful, he or she is then eligible for promotion to the GS-14 Pay grade. After that, there are opportunities to promote to the GS-15 level and above. In order to promote above a GS-15, a Special Agent almost always must relocate to Washington D.C.(Interview done by an HSI ICE Special Agent, Michael Renaud). Choosing a path in the Criminal Justice field is a very unique, fulfilling and exciting opportunity. Although it does require hard work and commitment, it is not

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) are a few other agencies that also employ criminal profilers. Although there are other employers that hire criminal profilers, the FBI is the most prominent. In order to be considered as a potential member of these programs, having an advanced degree in behavioral or forensic science is recommended. However, the most important qualification is an agent’s overall experience as an investigator of violent crimes. John Douglas, a famous FBI profiler, believes that “degrees and academic knowledge [are] not nearly as important as experience and certain subjective qualities” (Muller 250).

I will do well at Western because of the programs offered. I have spoken with many police officers in my city as well as other agencies nearby. Many of the officers I spoke to told me that Western was the best institution and has an exceptional Criminal Justice program. With completing my degree requirements at ICC and meeting the admission prerequisites for this institution, I am looking forward to excel academically and strengthen my critical thinking skills.Through my criminal justice professors, I have received insight through countless experiences from their time in the criminal justice system. My professors have allowed me to think critically and assess real world events that are changing the profession and being prepared. When the day comes, the knowledge that has been given to me can be used appropriately to portray myself, my agency, and my school as well as my community.
My dream job is to some day work with The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Critical Incident Response Group's Investigations and Operations Support Sections (IOSS.) This branch of work is under the FBI’s Crisis Incident Response Group. The IOSS organization is divided into two sections, the National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) and the Operations Support Branch (OSB.) The NCAVC has four Behavioral Analysis Units (BAU,) and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP.) With the support gained from family and teachers I am positive working with the BAU is achievable.
