First of all I would like to say that a career in the field of social work would be an amazing opportunity. There are so many fields and avenues you can explore with this type of degree. If I was to be expected into the University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Social Work it would be a blessing in so many ways to me as well as my two children. I am applying because I want to further my education and better myself in the process. I work with children and families now on a daily basis and enjoy it. I actually could never picture myself doing anything else at this point. For the last thirteen years I have been helping others and that makes me feel good. I know they were helped, they are in a better situation, and I am blessed to be in the situation to do that. I want to pursue professional social work education because there is more people out there in need and I feel a calling in that field. I feel that people deserve respect regardless of their situations or circumstances. When I am working with people it is very important to always keep their personal information confidential. I do not judge others nor should anyone else. No matter peoples mistakes, situations, or backgrounds they all deserve respect and help. People should never have to lose their dignity to better themselves or their families. They may just need a little more assistance, time, or care to learn how to do something to get the task
I chose to go into the field of Social Work. The reason being I felt that I was good at helping others. I am helpful by nature and I tend to attract those looking to be helped. I believe my career choice is appropriate for me because I do fill enjoyment when I help others. It is something that I get tired of at times but the end result always lifts my spirits. I have been in the helping field for 20 years and I can’t think of any other career that would work best for me.
I chose to pursue Social Work due to my philosophy of justice and believing in the progression towards a just world, or as Gandhi puts it; being the change you wish to see. I wanted a career that allowed me to work with people and provide help to individuals in need. I wanted a career that strives to provide equal opportunity for all people and works to end the dilemmas our society faces.
Choosing a career is a very important aspect to people’s lives. One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I want to have the ability to touch people’s lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to college to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.
In truth, I originally wanted to apply to Aurora University because of the location and its convenience. After I researched the program and attended an open house I knew this decision was a good one. The three year part time program stood out to me because it fits in well with my current schedule. When I came to campus the atmosphere immediately felt welcoming and the faculty acted as if they truly cared about my future. Unlike other universities, the faculty gave life advice as opposed to advice just to recruit students to their program. I am currently working at the as a social worker assistant. Prior to working at the nursing home I was employed at a restaurant as a general manager. I have found that my current job to be very rewarding. The reason I am majoring in social work is because I have a strong desire to help people, make things better, and make a difference in people’s lives. My goal is to become a licensed social worker and work in the gerontology field.
I have chosen social work as a profession because of my passion to help others. I want to make a difference in someone’s life and help them through the problems they are having. When I made the decision to return to college to complete a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) I looked at many universities. Three challenges that I know I will be presented with during my time in school will be time management, distractions and support.
My intense passion for learning has shifted my life in a new and positive direction. Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” and that is exactly what I plan to do. For as long as I can remember I always loved helping people, but I never thought of making a career out of it until my senior year came around. While working towards my senior 100 hours I began volunteering at the local elementary school where I found my love for helping and playing with the kids. I had no idea what career I could major in so I did some research and I found social work.
