“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” (Chris McCandless) This was said by McCandless because he could not find happiness from his family so he went out to go find happiness. The book Into the Wild, by John Krakauer, was a book about a person named Chris McCandless, who could not find happiness from his family because they always provided him with all the materials he needed. This caused him to go out for an adventure or to the wild in Alaska. While on his journey, he had read books finding self- definition and so he used the authors from the book as literary heroes to get him past the journey. He was really inspired by the writers. With the inspiration he was set out to find happiness, and so he went into the wild. It is where he spent the rest of his days until he died because of poisoning. Many of his literary heroes inspired him to do what he did, but one stands out the most. Leo Tolstoy, who is considered to be one of the best novelists, Leo really inspired Chris because they had a life that they could relate. He also appreciated him because he had realistic views of the life. Chris McCandless needed inspiration for his adventure, so he looked up to the literary heroes as his guidance to the wild.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on November 13, 1850 in Scotland. Being the only son of a famous civil engineer, Stevenson was expected to continue the family tradition, but this was against his wishes for his life. At an early age, he exhibited a yearning to write, and although he could not read until he was seven or eight, he composed stories and dedicated them to his parents and nurse. Stevenson was not brought up by the most caring parents, and received most of his adolescent guidance from his nurse. Throughout his child, the nurse cared for him and instilled in him the Christian beliefs that undoubtedly shaped his novels. The nurse would read to him from the bible during his periods of bed rest, as he was a sickly child, and these daily readings instilled in him a love for storytelling. Although he was a sickly child, he managed to receive a decent education through some schooling, private tutoring and at the efforts of his nurse and was able to enroll in Edinburgh University when he was 17.

Being the shy young man that he was, he could not find a place in the arts community there. At the age of twenty-four, Shaw decided to establish himself as a writer. When newspapers and magazines repeatedly rejected his articles, he then decided to become a novelist. Although all publishers rejected his first novel, Shaw continued to write and produced four more novels between 1880 and 1883; he found no publisher for any of them. Finally, in 1886, Shaw’s first novel, Cashel Byron’s Profession was published. This novel was very popular, but after publishing his second novel, An Unsocial Socialist, his novel writing career came to an end.
Each period of history consists of the ideas and inspirations of individuals ending in a progression. Within this group there are people and ideals that surpass the average and improve an age. One such individual that displayed these qualities was the American writer Henry James. As a man of the arts, James believed that literature should offer an experience for a reader that truly resembled life and its many necessities. The movement created from these ideas was known as literary realism and provided a new level of depth and meaning to James works (Chandler). As a citizen of both America and Britain, James was able to cross cultural gaps in his literature exploring the clash of personalities from the regions. The freedom with which he wrote and developed his novels led to the overall enrichment of literature for years to come. As a freedom writer, Henry James assimilated literary realism and cross cultural gaps in his literature that had a strong impact on America (Chandler).
