1980’s Fashion The 1980’s were a decade of great change in the world. This is evident from the many discoveries and innovation of the time to the extreme fashion and style of the period. Politics were front and center in the 80’s as well and there were a number of important historical events that took place. A team of explorers, led by Dr. Robert Ballard discovered the wreckage of The Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in 1985. The music of the 80’s reflected the changes and political turmoil in parts of the world and with the invention of cable television, many were suddenly able to enjoy the visible aspect of music through videos. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan uttered one of the most famous quotes from the 80’s, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down Hassell 5 this wall” in reference to the Berlin Wall which separated East and West Germany. In 1989, the dismantling of the Berlin Wall began which led to the reunification of Germany. The medical field saw great innovation with the invention in 1988 of the first artificial heart, which was made to last a lifetime. It was not an easy undertaking and took many trials to perfect. One of the great inventions of the 80’s, the World Wide Web, was created in 1989. This allowed anyone with access to a computer to search for information on any topic they could imagine. As for the fashion of the 80’s, there seemed to be an ‘anything goes’ attitude. Fashion went from preppy to punk and everything in between. Neon and spandex were extremely popular. Neon could be worn as a full outfit or just an accessory to add to or complete your outfit. While neon wasn’t easy to pull off, there were many ways to utilize the bright colors. There were also very high profile designers such as Italian designer Giorgio Armani. Armani suits were high fashion suits and were the choice for the wealthy. Big hair was also popular in the 80’s, most girls got perms and teased their hair. They definitely made a statement and stood out, although they were highly flammable. The network MTV was launched on August 1st, 1981. The first video to be aired on cable was “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Teens and adults alike loved to watch the music videos of their favorite artists and looked to the artists as their fashion guides. Guys and girls alike loved to copy the cutting edge fashion shown in the videos. MTV showcased many talented artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson. Madonna had an enormous influence on the way girls dressed. Her style was scandalous, shameless and unique and most teenage girls idolized her. Michael Hassell 5 Jackson was known not only as “The King of Pop” but also “The King of Style”. He wore leather jackets with metal studs, a single white glove covered in sequins, and numerous accessories with many embellishments. His style was edgy and flashy, and definitely stood
