We all know the feeling of writing an essay or doing your homework, but don’t know how to start or what to do. So we decide to take a short 10 minute break. Later those 10 minutes turn to 20, then to a half hour, and then to an hour. This continues until the very last minute as we struggling to finish on time. This is procrastination. Procrastination is a very prevalent issue among students that we don’t take seriously enough. It can lead to more stress, bad grades, etc. Procrastination can slowly sabotage people’s lives. While procrastination is caused by everyday challenges, there are many solutions to it. Procrastination is a threat to success and self sabotage. In the article, 8 Ways Procrastination Can Destroy Your Life, the author, Kirstin O’Donovan, explains 8 common ways procrastination sabotages lifes. When you procrastinate you lose time, blow opportunities, you are unable to meet goals, ruin your career, lower your self-esteem, make poor decisions, damage your reputation and risk your health (O'Donovan). Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.

People all procrastinate at one time or another. Procrastination is the practice of delaying work on important tasks in favor of less challenging ones. Chronic procrastinating hinders productivity and affects our state of mind by creating anxiety and stress (Reichelt). As deadlines approach, one often feels frustration and guilt for not starting on a task earlier. We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which often results in a mad scramble to finish the project in the twenty-four hours before the projects deadline. One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the misconception that we need to be inspired or in the mood to work on the task at hand (Reichelt). However, the reality is that if you wait for the “right time” you will most likely wait for an indefinite amount of time and the task will never get completed.

This type of procrastination is not only an academic issue but it may also be a life style habit. People will put off getting the job done because they simply "don 't have the time". Most adult 's have jobs and families, and may find it hard to manage work school and family, therefore they mismanage their time. By the end of the day they are not able to get to the work done. By telling themselves they will get to it tomorrow without setting a designated allotted time to complete the task at hand. Needless to say this can cause the task to either not get done or quickly get done without too much thought.
Based on my experience, I procrastinate because of my fear of inadequacy. It is hard for me to begin a task because I am afraid that I will not live up to expectations. I am always hard on myself, and it is because I am worried that I am going to disappoint others or myself. If I feel like my ideas are lacking then I switch onto a new train of thought, and place the responsibility in the deep corners of my mind. I am afraid that I’ll be dissatisfied with myself and so I put off starting or finishing a project. My fear of failure often leads me to feel a reluctance to even start a new task.

We all come to a choice, in our daily lives, either to do the things we want or to do the things we have to do.
