Grace has never had a real home her whole life. For Grace and her mom, “there was always a better job or place to live, better schools or less crime” (15). A second theme of the story is give people second chances. Lacey and Grace had a secret plan, Plan B, in which they would drive Grace’s grandma crazy enough that Grace could go back to living with Mrs.Greene and Lacey. Grace should have given Grandma another chance because she might not understand everything she's lost such as “waiting for her daughter to come home” but years later dead (196). Another theme of the story is spend the most time with loved ones while they’re here. Grace finally realized her grandma isn’t so bad. They both want “to find a way to get them back”, they’re loved ones, and that’s through each other (196). Grace has lost her dad, grandpa, and mom, but doesn’t realize that her grandma lost them too and could be
The major themes of the book are directly related to the themes which John Demos uses to tell this story. The storyline moves on though the evolution of one theme to the next. The function of these major sections is to allow the reader to relate to John Williams overall state of mind as the story unfold. By implementing these major themes into his work, John Demos make it possible for the reader to fully understand the story from beginning to end.
In the article “Black Like I Thought I Was,” Erin Aubry Kaplan introduces us to fifty-one year old Wayne Joseph, a man whose entire life was uprooted when he unknowingly opened up the Pandora’s box that his family had managed to keep shut for decades. From his birth Wayne Joseph was, to the best of his knowledge, black. He was raised by his black parents in a black neighborhood, and was more importantly accepted as black by the surrounding black community. All of this reaffirmation of his race gave him little room to doubt that he was anything but black. As he grew, he was molded by his presumed heritage and internalized its culture and values. For over fifty years he had built his life on what he was told. It was not until he subjected himself to a DNA
Frank J. Webb allows us to see that blacks cannot pass as being white. Blacks would have to avoid their black friends like Clarence Jr. did. It seems like Clarence Jr. and Mr. Winston did not feel bad at first for trying to pass as white. Eventually, they knew that trying to pass as white in the North would be a bad idea, especially for Clarence Jr. He practically killed himself trying to keep a secret from his fiancée and family. Trying to pass as white would not work out for blacks and they should just be who they are and not someone they want to be.
On Friday April 24th J.P. Walker, Preacher Lee, Crip Reyer and L.C. Davis got into Reyer’s Oldsmobile and they took off on a mission to kill Mark Charles Parker. (3 other cars of men followed) They went to the courthouse/jail in Poplarville and they could not get in. So they went to Jewel Alford’s House (The jail keeper) to get the keys to the Jail. Alford went with the four men to the courthouse. When he got there he went in and down the hall to Sheriff Moody’s office and got the keys to the jail. He opened the door to the jail and Lee, Reyer, Davis, Walker followed Alford into the jail. Alford then opened Parkers cell and Lee and Davis pulled Parker out of the jail and courthouse to the Reyer's Oldsmobile. Alford then left and the men got into the car.
The word evil is defined as profoundly immoral and malevolent. The immoral or unethical things we sometimes find ourselves doing are a result of desperation, confusion and anger. Once we realize what our actions have become, we either feel relieved or guilty, afraid of the possible outcome. Our first instincts are to try and cover up our immoral actions with actions that in our minds will fix the problem; more immoral thoughts and actions. Honesty and truth seem so distant in these situations as our desperation and fear of judgment direct our irrational choices. In Macbeth, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth experience the guilt of their role in the King’s death. As a result, Macbeth does not admit to his crime for fear of his life being taken, but instead plots against Banquo to cover his tracks. Though murder is an extreme case, the same thoughts and morals apply in the situations we face everyday. A lie, in fear of the consequences, can cause more pain and guilt than we intended thus another lie is created which adds strength to the first lie. Evil is a strong word, when heard it creates...

The Midwest: land of TV news anchors, housewives, and dreary, never-ending fields. In her memoir “The Horizontal World”, Debra Marquart uses interesting rhetorical techniques to detail this vast, distinctly uninteresting plain. By using unusual figurative language, outside examples to solidify her points, and a geometric extended metaphor, she paints a picture of perhaps the most boring place on Earth.
The story takes place in St. Andrew Valley, an ordinary town with not much in it. Jason and his friend look for snails sometimes, exploring rivers and basically anywhere with moisture. Jason attends Teen Power Outreach sessions held in the church basement every Thursday because his mom forces him to. He also goes to mass every Sunday at the Church of the Good Shepard. One day he has a revelation while under the water tower: water is life. After making a new religion centered around the water tower, he recruits disciples and eventually they go to the top, where things go badly. They swim in the reservoir and then Henry falls off and lands on the catwalk, breaking many bones. Afterwords they get arrested and Jason goes to jail for six hours until his dad bails him out. Henry goes to St. Theresa's Hospital. Near the end of the book, Jason and his friends go to the mall, where he gets hit in the head with a crutch, then hits his head on the floor and gets a mild concussion and seven stitches. The story ends with Jason in the hospital, reflecting on the events of the book.
During week one of EDC131 we learned that the way in which we use language to communicate can vary depending on the context. We also learned that there are many different forms of communication this includes writing, talking, and signing/ gestures. In learning both of these communications it became clear that communication is more than just speaking and that we use language to express many different emotions. Things such as opinions, beliefs, wishes, threats, commands, promises, and many others are also expressed through language and can change meaning if context is changed. This will later be helpful with my education and future career. (Original)
He called the cops but his mom didn't press any charges even though she went the hospital. Although she did break up with Bear Rafe and Georgina were both glad of the decision that her mom makes but the didn't say it. So then he has to have meeting with his mom and the principal he said that he was expelled from his school for the rest of the school year, although his English teacher was impressed by his art skills that she suggested an art school. ...pposed to kiss Mary Elizabeth but he didn't so she broke up with Charlie) leaving him back at the start, with no friends. This was a bad time because Charlie begins to start going “bad” again which means he starts to have flashbacks, and he gets really depressed. He saves Patrick from a fight at school which is kind of like a forgiveness from his friends to let him hang out and talk to them again. Charlie helps Sam get into a college and soon all of his friends leave to go to college. He gets bad again and ends up going to the hospital. When Sam and Patrick come over to Charlie's house, this is like closure to Charlie and they drive through the tunnel for the closing page. I think that the author did a very good job in choosing when the events in the book would happen. It seemed like a teenagers life and he changed it up some so that the reader wouldn't get so bored.
“Critically evaluate Lin, 2009. Is it true that an international student must learn a new way of thinking and writing when they come to study in a UK-type academic environment?”
